Stuck in the Bay of Pigs memory, these Cubans will vote Republican, even if the people who look like them and speak like them are the ones threatened with deportation by the Republican Party Presidential Candidate. There’s a bit of drama in District 38, too — a safe Democratic seat that’s up for grabs between current Democratic state Rep. Daphne Campbell and former state Rep. Phillip Brutus. No Republican ran for the seat, which represents a highly diverse, coastal part of Northeast Miami-Dade.
Brutus, still a registered Democrat, is running as a no-party-affiliated candidate — a “tactical decision,” he admits, to bypass the crowded six-person primary field, where Campbell came out the victor.
“I ran as an NPA in case she won [the primary] to have a second chance at blocking her extremist positions,” Brutus said, adding that he hopes to galvanize Democratic primary voters who didn’t choose Campbell in that August election.
“They had a chance to vote for her and rejected her based on the issues,” he said, criticizing Campbell for “voting with extremist Republicans” on LGBT issues and workers’ rights. He also voiced concerns over her “ethical issues” and questions of fraud that have been raised against her and her family members.
Campbell did not return messages seeking comment.

I also received the endorsement of Miami-Dade County Commissioner Daniella Levine-Cava, Palmetto Bay Mayor Eugene Flinn, Pinecrest Mayor Cindy Lerner, SAVE and the political arm of the Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce of Florida.

King Tide Saturday October 15th Dinner Key, Coconut Grove. By Geniusofdespair
They expect a 3 foot height of high tide during this King Tide (Sunday and Monday). This is at 2'.8" today, Saturday, at Dinner Key in Coconut Grove. I took these photos at about 9:30 A.M - High Tide. Normal tides are 2.1 to 2.5 inches. What a difference just 3 inches can make! And they expect 4" more?

I agree completely with the following assessment. In the US, political noise is churning around plans to let in 65,000 Syrian refugees. Germany, alone, has taken in more than 10 times that number this year. Driving through the region now, I see refugees on the streets and know that the sectarian strife that is turning parts of the world inside out is caused, at least in part, by climate change. There is more, a lot more on the horizon.
Just last week, the British economist Sir Nicolas Stern -- who first clarified the threat of climate change as the greatest problem humanity has ever faced -- issued an even more dire prediction: that climate change could destroy the world economy. So far, this is the stuff of science fiction, but on the streets of European capitals, the outlines are coming clear.
The United States can't afford the political party, its candidates and incumbents who deny that government intervention is needed now to protect our national security from climate change impacts. In November, vote accordingly.

Traditionally, war and sectarian violence are significant contributors to forced migrations of refugees, but, soon, these scourges may be relatively minor drivers of displaced populations when juxtaposed with the ravages of sea level rise. But before I get too far into a discussion of “future shock” scenarios, it is important to look at what has transpired in Europe over the past 18 months as refugees from Northern Africa and the Middle East have desperately tried to seek relative safety from catastrophe by fleeing their ravaged homelands.

Last Night -The Beginning of King Tide in Broward. By Geniusofdespair
We aren't even at the height of the King Tide but flooding is happening. I saw it on Broward County's Intracoastal seawall last night.
Dinner Key October 19th we will be seeing its highest tide. it is expected to be over a half a foot over the norm. It will steadily get higher till then and will subside after that date. Watch your tide people! I want photos.

PALMETTO BAY - Part 1 (Part 2 - Cutler Bay Monday)
PB candidates for Vice Mayor
John Dubois is the incumbent. He and is currently under ethical review for violating FL Sunshine Laws (Herald 6/7/16) and has sued 10 locals and officials during his last 4 years in office (Herald 8/26/16).
Dubois offered his home to be used by an accused sex-offender in a case of home invasion that involved a 9 year old girl in the Mangowood neighborhood (CBS News 6/2/15, CBS News 4/28/16). Dubois said the accused was his friend's son and he was doing him a favor. Dubois also hosted a fundraiser for the sex offender.
Dubois also tries to influence county and local decisions that affect his property. Charged with an environmental violation by DERM for cutting down mangroves from his bayfront mansion (Herald 3/10/15), he helped to elect Lynda Bell to the county commission and also issued her a personal loan. Bell then spent much of her time on the council attacking DERM. Dubois lost this case and will have to pay for the violation and county legal defense costs. Faced with development rights on the Palmetto Bay Village Center that is two doors down from his home and needing votes on the council, Dubois is supporting David Singer for PB District 2.
Public records show a $500,000 loan between the Dubois and Singer and the loan is alleged to be in default as of August. If both Singer and Dubois are elected, Singer would be beholden to Dubois and votes would be suspect. Dubois' personal lawyer, Mr. Leary, had only one client. Now he has two. He also happens to be suing the Village of Palmetto Bay on behalf of Dubois' neighbor (of the horse farm property next to the library) to stop the council's 40 acre park decision. Dubois uses the same developer's lobbyist, Jose Castillo of Green Point Group, for his campaign management consulting as Cutler Bay's Loyzelle and Bell.
Erica Watts is a newcomer to PB politics. Watts has law and economics degrees. Watts positively utilized her background and developed extensive experience in public service with the Family Court. Locally she is a dedicated volunteer and is the President of the Coral Reef Elementary School PTA. She is also on the Palmetto Bay Education Advisory Committee and has been honored by both Miami Dade County and the Village for her innovation, leadership and public service. Watts has no sign of developer contributions on her campaign reports.
David Zisman runs a local fireplace business. He's running on his business experience but has TWO bankruptcies in his past (Herald 10/7/14). He got into local politics after losing a bid for a zoning variance. He ran for Mayor in 2010 and lost. He ran for District 1 in 2014 and lost. Zisman shares a love of heckling the council with David Singer. He's posted videos highlighting the relationship between Dubois and Singer but while the council considers serious issues, you'll likely find them together at the back of the room smirking at the proceedings and chomping on large bags of chips. Zisman has accepted campaign contributions from several developers including Wayne Rosen in past campaigns.
PB Candidates for District 2
Tim Schaffer is the incumbent. Schaffer runs his own financial services business and spent 15 years as a reserve and auxillary police officer. He ran in 2012 primarily backed by the anti-Palmer Trinity development folks. After lawsuit costs to the Village and the illegality of past council zoning decisions (Herald 7/6/12) impacted Village finances, he switched camps and worked to stop lawsuit hemorrhage and change the Village's legal representation. He has steadfastly supported the council decision to transfer development rights within the PBVC in order to stop potential owner lawsuits, save natural areas and create a park. In an effort to reduce traffic and head off further development, he recently passed a resolution to explore turning the old FPL power plant into a Village park. Sounds good but let’s make sure FPL cleans up. (GENIUS - LOL)
David Singer's campaign signs say "Stop Over Development..." but his background is in real estate development. He has accepted PAC money and campaign dollars from several development and construction companies. Singer supported the Palmer Trinity development, spearheaded the ineffectual "Recall Palmetto Bay" (New Times 10/22/12) and called supporters of former Mayor Stancyk, former Council member Lindsay and CCOCI a "merry band of mentally misfit followers". Inexplicably, many of these folks are now supporting Singer. This includes errant emailer Gary Pastorella. On opposing sides of a Firehouse location issue, Pastorella filed a restraining order against Singer after Singer sent numerous packages to the Pastorella home. Mr. Singer can regularly be seen on council meeting videos spewing personal attacks at the mayor and other council members during public comment. Singer doesn't yell at Vice Mayor John Dubois of course, because he owes him big and is said to be in default as of August.

Newt Gingrich is the political opportunist of our era; a discredited, former speaker of the House of Representatives who used his access to Donald Trump, the most clueless candidate for president in US history, to claw his way into the spotlight he craves like a moth to flame.
Young voters may not remember Gingrich. He became infamous by energizing the Christian conservative base while divorcing his then wife’s as she lay on her deathbed. Unforgettable, but memories are short.
To Republicans of a certain age, Gingrich was the silver-haired professor who blistered President Bill Clinton, accusing him of adultery while he was committing it himself. More to the point of governance, Gingrich steered Congress through his "Contract with America", promising to deliver the benefits of trickle-down economics. It is the consequence of those ideas in the mid 1990's -- for instance, that cutting taxes for the wealthiest and for corporations is the best way to grow jobs -- that has Trump voters up in arms.
Trump voters don't seem to understand that their candidate's top defender is the guy who advocated policies they are against. That's just how screwed up the Donald Trump campaign is.
To be sure, Newt Gingrich is well-spoken. He chooses words after carefully researching their impact. He can speak beyond sound bites in fully formed paragraphs. Don't mistake that talent for wisdom. In fact, after his fall from grace, Newt Gingrich developed a collegial relationship with Hillary Clinton. That's right: the same Hillary Clinton he inveighs against today. Newt Gingrich loves himself the most. That puts him on par with Donald Trump, who doesn't want anyone else at his level. Period.
One cannot believe a word that Newt Gingrich says, beyond his own ambitions to have a fourth act in his personal drama. Someone should explain to Newt: there are second and third acts, but no fourth acts.

The Mayor's sister-in-law certainly has the financial advantage over Mo Abety. She has 3 times as much money in her campaign account. Mo was endorsed by the Miami Herald and threatened by Carlos Gimenez, Jr. to get out of the race. Mo didn't take kindly to be threatened.
When nothing else works, slam them with being a communist. Low, low blow by the opposing candidate's supporters.

Vladimir Putin lives by the power of disinformation and misdirection. Putin stole billions. He is ruthless and unchallenged in Russia.
Donald Trump has the inclination of a dictator. His net worth is questionable. Trump has an eye for weakness but is clueless about diplomacy, history, and context. Putin has no respect for rule of law. Trump doesn't even understand the US Constitution. He would be, in a word, Putin's patsy.
Vladimir Putin can read the US polls. Why would he push so hard from Trump's corner with such a small chance of Trump winning in November? Already the international nervousness and turmoil the Trump camp created has served Russia's interests. For Russia today, stirring the pot is its own reward.
Since the end of World War II, the Soviet Union/ Russia has had a single objective: to erode US power wherever possible. With international turmoil, its possibilities increase. Trump -- with pledges to upset NATO and other signposts of international cooperation -- is Putin's way in.
As a historical matter Russia has never operated from the center of international power, because its aims are so clearly transparent and hostile to the Western world and industrialized nations. Trump threatens to upend the cardinal rule of post-war diplomacy: contain Russia.
The chip on Putin's shoulder is Russia's eternal grievance: that it always operates from the margins toward the center.
In the era of globalization and technology, Russia is still minor partner even compared to China, the behemoth at its border. Putin detests Obama exactly for this reason: a minority has more power and influence than he has. With Trump, Putin sees how the tables could turn. The volatile non-politician Trump, who lacks the character and stability to be a leader, would be an easy trophy.
Hillary, on the other hand, stands for diplomatic centeredness and cultural diversity that is an anathema to Putin.
Putin views Trump as his Trojan Horse. Putin has already taken clear advantage of US policy disasters in the Syria, where Russia can wage war on behalf of another dictator, Assad, without a single concern in the world.
American voters are right to worry there is something in Donald Trump's tax returns that show indebtedness to Russia. By withholding his tax returns, Trump wins. If he loses the election, with Russian businessmen and with Putin, he still wins.
As for Russia meddling in US elections, why wouldn't it if the means were available and its opportunity in Donald Trump so near at hand.
