The NRA Questionaire for Political Office. By Geniusofdespair

Look what just came in the mail...

It is scary if you vote for a candidate with the NRA Endorsement. Look at what they are agreeing to:

Opps...wrong jpeg but not so wrong...

Florida Bay: Dead? ... by gimleteye

Reports filtering in, from fishermen using Florida Bay, say that the water is choking in a toxic algae bloom.

A week and a half ago, flying into Miami from the southwest, the passenger jet carried me straight up Florida Bay and, looking, down, the water looked clouded with algae.

Recent photo of Florida Bay taken from a passenger jet, looking east toward the Florida Keys. The spit of land in the center is Cape Sable. The dusty colored water in Florida Bay is a vast algae bloom.
Over the weekend, a friend reported fishing in this same area we flew over; nearly eighteen miles west of Islamorada in the Gulf. The captain wheeled the boat into twenty foot depth where he stopped, surrounded by thousands of dead fish. He didn't take photos, unfortunately, or we would post them. What my friend did say was that the three began to cough; slowly then harder. The toxic algae that killed the fish was choking them, too. The captain spun the boat up on a plane and scooted away.

Since the first massive algae bloom in Florida Bay in the late 1980's, serial and repetitive outbreaks have vastly disrupted the food chain; thinning out the natural habitats where fish and crustaceans thrive. (Just one example, since the 1970's the price of colossal stone crab claws has climbed nearly fifty fold. The bonefish and permit and tarpon that once habituated the channels, bays and sea grass meadows have largely disappeared -- returning only when the water is algae-free -- , putting a billion dollar fishing and tourism economy at real risk.)

I don't use the term "dead", lightly. There are some alive things in the bay, like catfish, that NEVER were there before, when the water was right. Catfish feed on dead stuff at the bottom. Lots of that. Also, we know that ecosystems can revive -- the Kissimmee River project is just one example, where returning a semblance of natural flows brought conditions back to a semblance of what they had been before the river was straightened by the US Army Corps.

Florida Bay is a much different and larger-scale task. It is the drainage basin for 2 million acres of drastically altered upstream wetlands including about 600,000 acres of monoculture, industrial sugarcane that drains phosphorus, nitrogen, and sulfur additives used to maximize crop yield. We are not even close to "getting the water right" in Florida Bay, and the further away we grow from the first insult, the harder it is to conceive a way through. It is not for lack of effort.

Everglades Restoration was supposed to address the water quality problems in Florida Bay. Lawsuits against the state of Florida and Big Sugar in the 1980's, levied by the federal government, the Miccosukee Tribe and environmental groups, yielded the federal state partnership to fix the Everglades in 2000. The Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan was a horrendous compromise because Big Sugar insisted that the issue of water storage and cleansing be booted to the indefinite future.

Subsequent plans to rehydrate the upstream Everglades with clean, fresh water at the right time of year turned into engineering fiascos because they routinely under-size land buy-outs needed for sufficient storage and treatment marshes. Bad faith is thick as cattails in once-pristine Everglades.

Last year's promise by Gov. Rick Scott and Senate President Joe Negron to fix the problems "once and for all" are another tranche in the category of "shamefully inadequate". The multi-billion dollar plan -- approved by the state legislature but not yet the federal cost-sharing partners -- will only deliver certainty to one constituency; billionaire Big Sugar campaign contributors.

Florida Bay? Scarcely at all. Florida Bay is not the only slow motion tragedy in Florida's waterways and natural habitats. It is a highly visible one. Curious that voters seem incapable of barring from elected office so many politicians who claim to care but are as cowed by Big Sugar as Congress is, by the NRA.

America is Beginning to Suck Because of the NRA. By Geniusofdespair

You better watch out
You better not cry
Better not pout
I'm telling you why
Santa Claus is coming to town...with an ak47.

I have had it with the gun lobby and the NRA. The San Bernardino shooting is the second mass shooting today. 20 children were shot in 2012 at Sandy Hook Elementary. CHILDREN. CHILDREN AT SCHOOL. Is this what we want in our society? The US leads the world in Mass Shootings. Aren't we great!

The gun trolls are out in force trying to steer me away from domestic violence. "Are you crazy what about Paris" they say. Well what about access to guns here? Wackos are getting guns, that bothers me a lot. I went to a gun show. We sold a rifle with no paperwork at all. I would suppose I could have just as easily have bought one.

Florida House's OPEN CARRY: You Don't Have to Conceal Your Weapon In Most Instances. By Geniusofdespair

OPEN CARRY: STUPID BEYOND BELIEF!!

Hey Mr. Boss Man, Can I Get A Raise?...Step A little closer....

They want guns legal on campuses, and the Florida House is proposing that weapons don't have to be concealed anymore. Just put it on desk next to your computer or on your car's dashboard for easy access during road rage. Intimidate anyone you want. Whoa I like that. Nothing like intimidation. Only bullying is better. If you have a hot head, all the better. This bill is flying through the House:

I previously wrote about a second bill that allows guns on campuses 4001 also sponsored by Steube.

With this new bill, intimidation is open to you all --- in most circumstances. Looks like you can take it to a School Board Meeting or a County Commission Meeting. Can I bring it up with me when I speak at the podium?

Floridians are you out of your fucking minds? A man just shot And killed a waitress because she told him he couldn't smoke and this bill allows guns to be displayed at restaurants that don't primarily serve liquor. Are we going to have waiters with guns on their trays and patrons with guns on the tables?

Is Greg Steube really as insane as his bills?

The sponsor Greg Steube's father is a sheriff. What is going on with all this gun nonsense? Can you bring one into Greg's office and put it in your lap as you pepper him with requests? Can I go to his son, Ethan Gregory's chess club (only sports events are exempt) and wave my legal gun in the air? What if there is a bad call on the match? Can I point my gun at the judge? If you can do THOSE THINGS maybe I am not so against these two bills. If it actually effects the sponsor of such stupid bills as these I am willing to go with it. If I can approach Greg Steube with my weapon in view to have a friendly conversation, I will get a permit and a gun. It will be worth it. I will be making so many personal visits people will start to love me...because they will be very afraid.

Let's meet for lunch at Panera or Starbucks and discuss your future in the legislature Greg, yes they don't have a liquor license...PERFECT!

What it Cost the NRA to Buy Senators' Votes. By Geniusofdespair

A minority in the U.S. Senate voted to block gun reform. Here is how much money they received from the NRA in exchange for their vote against common sense reforms.

Marco Rubio comes cheap.

Armed Guards at All Schools? By Geniusofdespair

How does Wayne LaPierre, NRA head, want to deal with assault weapons being used in schools? His answer, arm people with competing assault weapons in about 100,000 public schools. What a gift to the gun lobby that would be.

The fault with his logic, what about the movie theaters? Should we then have armed guards at every movie theater? Where do you stop? A camera on every corner along with an armed guard? Will that make us all feel safer?  Actually Mr. La Pierre, Star Trek thought of guns running amok first. In the 1968 episode "Piece of the Action" everyone on the planet carried machine guns. Have you not learned the lessons of Star Trek?

NRA Celebrating the Holidays. By Geniusofdespair

I just got my NRA Christmas card.

Marvin Gaye: What's Going On. By Geniusofdespair

Marvin Gaye was shot and killed by his own father in 1984.
Mother, mother
There's too many of you crying
Brother, brother, brother
There's far too many of you dying
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today...

Also meeting a tragic end by gun violence, Marvin Gaye's lyrics from "What's Going On" are dedicated to the memory of the children and adults who lost their lives in Connecticut.

How Did I Get on the NRA Mailing List? By Geniusofdespair

I just got this really nice gold, red and black NRA decal and an opportunity to get $5,000 in accident insurance free for a membership fee of $25.00 a year. I am clumsy, the insurance could come in handy. I wonder if I have to die to collect? And, then there is the free magazine and duffel bag to consider and the $1,000 in firearm insurance. Such a tempting deal. (hit on image to enlarge it) The decal has a lot of power, they say:

When your local lawmakers see this shield...they see crystal-clear proof that if they push gun registration, licensing and prohibition, they can expect defeat on Election Day.

And what do we need the NRA to protect us from:

Your constitutional right to own a gun is under attack by anti-gun politicians and administration officials, global gun ban diplomats at the U.N., militant anti-hunting extremists, radical billionaires and the freedom hating Hollywood elite.
