They don't always get it right, but I believe on Jose Javier Rodriguez and Phillip Brutus, the Miami Herald is on target:

Phillip Brutus State Senate District 38

Unlike Ms. Campbell, Mr. Brutus, an attorney, supports the rights of LGBT Floridians, rejecting discriminatory legislation. He says that the poorer areas of this district are not “workforce ready” and he wants to bring more vocational education to those neighborhoods and get businesses involved with high schools students. He also wants residential developers to set aside 25 percent of new building for affordable rentals. He believes in the Second Amendment, but rightly does not support open carry or campus carry. It gives people “a sense of invincibility,” Mr Brutus told the Editorial Board. “Too many things can happen.” He criticizes Rep. Campbell for voting against holding a special session on gun issues.

Mr. Brutus wants the state to confront climate change head on and opposes fracking: “We’ve got to go green.” Though he says he will caucus with the Democrats, Mr. Brutus is running as an NPA candidate — no party affiliation.

His progressive views are more in tune with this large, diverse district.  

The Herald recommends PHILLIP BRUTUS for State Senate District 38.

Jose Javier Rodriguez State Senate District 37

Mr. Rodriguez, 38, contrasts his own background as a former member of the Peace Corps and legal aid lawyer against Sen. Diaz de la Portilla’s work as a lobbyist for powerful interests such as charter schools and developers. His own work, Mr. Rodriguez says, has always served to benefit the public interest. In that vein, he called the Legislature’s unwillingness to expand Medicaid “the biggest catastrophic failure” by lawmakers during his four years as a state representative.

Mr. Rodriguez believes the state has to do more to improve public education, protect the environment and improve the justice system.

This race will be a close call for some voters, as it has been for some interest groups. Local teachers have endorsed Sen. Diaz de la Portilla. But the statewide teachers union has endorsed Mr. Rodriguez. We also give Mr. Rodriguez the edge. He has shown that he is an engaged and articulate lawmaker, willing to work hard for the right causes and to improve Florida. More Democrats like Mr. Rodriguez in the Florida Senate, where Republicans currently hold a 26-14 margin, would bring a better balance to state government.

For State Senate District 37, the Miami Herald recommends JOSE JAVIER RODRIGUEZ.

State Senate Districts 38 is one of the richest in Miami Dade County and most diverse and we are going to let it go to an unqualified candidate Daphne Campbell? don't let it happen. The lazy ass Democrats won't help him even though they hate their own candidate Daphne Campbell. You must, must, call all your friends in this district. Do you have any friends on the coast? Of course you do. Tell them to vote for Phillip who is pro-choice, endorsed by Save Dade, Daniella Levine Cava, Mayors Eugene Flinn, Cindy Lerner, Mayor of Aventura and ME!

If you hit on this the street names should appear. Frankly I got tired of piecing it together. However, these are the areas that Phillip Brutus can win.

Daphne Campbell does not deserve this district. You cannot let her win. During her victory party this Democrat posed with the head of the Republican Party. They are fighting for her. If you have a friend in this district send them this Blog Post.

There’s a bit of drama in District 38, too — a safe Democratic seat that’s up for grabs between current Democratic state Rep. Daphne Campbell and former state Rep. Phillip Brutus. No Republican ran for the seat, which represents a highly diverse, coastal part of Northeast Miami-Dade.

Brutus, still a registered Democrat, is running as a no-party-affiliated candidate — a “tactical decision,” he admits, to bypass the crowded six-person primary field, where Campbell came out the victor.

“I ran as an NPA in case she won [the primary] to have a second chance at blocking her extremist positions,” Brutus said, adding that he hopes to galvanize Democratic primary voters who didn’t choose Campbell in that August election.

“They had a chance to vote for her and rejected her based on the issues,” he said, criticizing Campbell for “voting with extremist Republicans” on LGBT issues and workers’ rights. He also voiced concerns over her “ethical issues” and questions of fraud that have been raised against her and her family members.

Campbell did not return messages seeking comment.

Phillip Brutus is still waiting for the Miami Herald to interview him for a nod at an endorsement. He said about other endorsements:

I am proud to announce that I formally received the endorsement of AFSCME and the South Florida Labor Council thus far in my race for the Florida Senate, District 38. These Labor Unions serve more than 2 million Floridians and have upwards of 4000 local Union outlets.

I also received the endorsement of Miami-Dade County Commissioner Daniella Levine-Cava, Palmetto Bay Mayor Eugene Flinn, Pinecrest Mayor Cindy Lerner, SAVE and the political arm of the Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce of Florida.

Floor Speech on April 27, 2011 by Florida State Rep. Daphne Campbell

I support this bill because it rightly allows the people of Florida to decide whether or not they want to have their hard-earned taxpayer dollars used to pay for abortions. If abortion is truly a private matter between a woman and her doctor and the government should not be involved as pro-choice legislators say, then the government should not be involved in paying for abortions, either. Regardless of your position on abortion, the Pew Research Center states that approximately 70% of ALL Americans, pro-choice and pro-life, are opposed to having their hard-earned taxpayer dollars used to pay for abortions. This is a matter of fairness and democracy.

THEREFORE, I MUST TAKE A STAND TO SPEAK AGAINST ABORTION AND WITHSTAND MY VALUES WHICH ARE IN LINE WITH 80% OF Americans in the United States and the citizens of my district.

New fraud trial for Daphne Campbell's son prompts outburst on House floor

TALLAHASSEE — An appeals court on Wednesday ordered a new Medicaid fraud trial for the son of state Rep. Daphne Campbell after determining a judge didn’t allow the jury that convicted him to deliberate properly.

Gregory Campbell was convicted on multiple Medicaid fraud charges in 2013, sentenced to seven years in prison and ordered to pay $460,893.58 in restitution stemming from an Internal Revenue Service investigation into his mother, a Democrat from North Miami who was never criminally charged and always maintained her innocence.

When she learned her son’s appeal had succeeded, Campbell was so overjoyed that she started yelling that her son had been “exonerated” and praised Jesus so loudly on the floor of the state House of Representatives that proceedings were stopped briefly.

She could also be heard yelling “my Jesus, it was one vote. They did this to me, it was one vote. I am vindicated.”

Other lawmakers said her fellow Miami state Rep. Carlos Trujillo, a Republican and former prosecutor, informed Campbell her son had not been cleared, but that the Third District Court of Appeal had simply reversed the charges and remanded the case back to the Miami-Dade County court for a new trial. Trujillo did not return calls seeking comment.

Campbell continued to praise God and was escorted from the floor. She is running for state Senate against Democratic Sen. Gwen Margolis in the newly drawn Senate District 38.

Her explosion of emotion came as the House was debating a $1 billion tax cut package, one of its top priorities.

Daphne Campbell is Not a REAL Democrat even though she ran as one and WON the State Senate Primary for District 38! By Geniusofdespair

This is a picture of Daphne Campbell at her victory party for winning the Democratic slot for State Senate in District 38.  She is with Republican Chair Nelson Diaz. Nuff said? She is not really a Democrat she is DINO (Democrat in name only) and does not share Democratic ideals. She votes with Republicans.  How did she manage to win?

There were too many Democrats in the race and that gave Daphne Campbell the edge with the super voters -- many Haitians. I blame Michael Gongora for her win, he joined the race on the last day of qualifying.

Luckily there is another choice in the General Election: Phillip Brutus, who is a real Democrat but strategically looked at the race and at the last moment switched from Democrat to no party affiliation. Looks like that was a brilliant decision.

I mean really, to see Daphne Campbell celebrate the Democratic victory with the Republican Chair, how wrong is that? Democrats should be furious. Although I put the map up yesterday, here it is again.  If you live in this district --- do not just go down the ticket marking Democrats. Phillip Brutus had to register as a NPA (no party affiliation) so he could get to the general election in November.  Give him money...he needs it.

State Senate District 38: Phillip Brutus Made a Strategic Gamble that Paid Off. By Geniusofdespair

Attorney Phillip Brutus read the handwriting on the wall in the State Senate Race 38. There were too many candidates in the race, he saw that. Michael Gongora and Kevin Burns should have stayed out of it because they guaranteed  the dreadful Daphne Campbell a win in the primary. Phillip took the only road possible to win: He changed from Democrat to no party affiliation (NPA) at the same time Gongora entered the race. I wrote about the Brutus switch June 25th.

So now we have the ethically challenged Daphne Campbell to contend with. She would be our next State Senator in this very Democratic district EXCEPT, Phillip Brutus is now in the running -- against her.  She is a Democrat that votes with Republicans. She is a shrill,  just an awful person.

Phillip Brutus needs everyone's help to win this. People tend to vote down the party on their ballot. They will have to move over to find Phillip. I always  liked him and I really hope he can pull it off. Here is a map of the massive district:

The district serves some very financially challenged areas and some of richest areas of Miami Dade County. It is a district pretty equally divided between Hispanics, Anglos, Blacks/Haitians. I think Phillip, who is very intelligent and a good listener, can bridge the gap and relate to everyone. We get on very well, have for years...and years. He is pro-choice, Daphne is not. I remember the days of coat hangers. I could never support a candidate that does not give a woman a choice. I fully support Phillip Brutus for District 38. Please vote for him.
