City of Miami wants to do, what? … guest blogger

The City wants to do what?

There is a proposed Charter Amendment coming up on election day on the August 26 ballot that will allow the City Commission to exclude the public from discussions, negotiations, planning and having their say on City Owned Submerged Lands. i.e. eliminating the current requirement in part that any and all waterfront/submerged lands must go for a vote.

Could this have something to do with the proposed soccer stadium downtown at the large slip of water that they want to turn into land?

The ballot reads: "Shall the Miami Charter be changed to allow the City to enter into leases or management agreements, for City-owned submerged lands (lands under water including bay bottoms), with entities having possessory or ownership interest in abutting uplands (lands bordering water) to build marinas, docks or like facilities, using methods adopted by ordinance, on the condition that such leases or management agreements result in a return to the City of at least fair market value?"

Why would anyone want to give up their right to vote and allow the City to decide for them if they currently have the right to vote now? Are they going to then want to choose the Governor and President for me? Maybe they can run my condo board for me, too and decide what I should eat and drink and where I should shop and live. Maybe we can give the City of Miami power of attorney over our lives. They can decide everything for us.

This smells. Who is pushing it? Who determines fair market value? The taxpayers get less than $1 a sq ft for the $3 Billion diverted to the Marlins Stadium AND we loaned the Marlins the money to pay the rent. Follow the money.

I just posted a call for action. Will you join in taking back Miami from the corrupt politicians? www.crespogram.com

Special interests. Somebody really wants soccer. No way to stop it.

3d anon, it has nothing to do with Soccer. It never has had anything to do with Soccer. That's just the carrot to steal the publicly owned waterfront land. I cannot imagine anyone with a brain voting to approve this charter amendment. I'd also suggest mass protests against all the elected's who approved this to go on the ballot in the first place.

The Pol's just keep upping the ante when it come to stripping away our rights, votes and our land!

This would apply to Coconut Grove waterfront, Miami Marine Stadium on Virginia Key - virtually any waterfront public parkland in the City - who's to say they don't have their sights on Alice Wainwright Park, Kennedy Park, Margaret Pace Park - to give it to developers as long as there is a "return on investment." These and future city officials only hold in trust these public properties - they have no right.

Ask Sarnoff to tell his constituents what his involvement and position is in the measure.

Why hasn't the Herald picked this up?

Miami has the least amount of park space for any city it's size. This will bring about even less water front access.

Why would you want a vote? Do you think the radio show ilk in Miami cares about the slip? They will launch a slick advertising campaign like the AA Arena did. This isn't the entire county voting. I would think Sarnoff's heir apparent would be against this and the filing of the slip so Sarnoff should not vote for any of this crap. I thought he was an environmentalist?

Sarnoff is all about pandering to rich people so they invite him and wifey to their parties.
