The Slumbering Beast stirs: how radical Republicans did to their own party, what Democrats could never achieve ... by gimleteye

It is no longer a matter of speculation: by shutting down the government and driving the U.S. to the brink of default, the GOP is the midst of utter strategic collapse.

How this happened is not a matter of speculation either. Veering toward billionaire conservative funders, their greed and self-interest, the GOP became an echo chamber through which only approved voices (ie. Fox News) could surface. Listening only to its own radicals, the GOP succeeded where no Democrat leadership could: repelling voters to such an extent that the 2014 election cycle will be a GOP bloodbath.

It is finally clear to American voters who had not paid much attention to the fine points of redistricting, that gerrymandered districts and fair play initiatives the GOP spent millions to combat -- like Fair Districts in Florida -- paved the way for the current disaster. You hear it now from disgruntled Republican senators: if only the radicals had stayed in their corner ... but it is the party leadership -- leaders like Jeb Bush -- that failed conservative voters.

And now America see the GOP for what it is: the resurgent faction of bitterness and resentment -- bitterness against minorities, including against Hispanics, and bitterness against fair and reasonable protections for the public.

Over 2.6 million people have viewed the following viral video/ explanation from the floor of the US House of Representatives, documenting the procedural tactic by the House GOP that shut down the government.

From Josh Barro, Business Insider Magazine: "There is no serious argument for Republican governance right now, even if you prefer conservative policies over liberal ones. These people are just too dangerously incompetent to be trusted with power." Barro adds, "A party that is this bad at tactics can't be expected to be any good at policy-making."

In a special election yesterday in Pasco County, a secure seat in the Florida House flipped to a Democratic challenger, despite more than a million dollars spent by the GOP. More of that, on the way.

I hope you are right, but I am much less optimistic. The right-wing machinery has now had 15 days to spin and remarket the shutdown and their sleazy agenda. The sheep will continue to buy in to the propaganda. You overestimate the intellectual curiousity of a large proportion of the public that subscribes to the tea-party philosophies. As long as they are fed fear and cease to seek facts, they will continue to support this broken system.

I am disgusted. China is calling for the de-Americanization of the global economy. I'm afraid they are right.

By virture of the fact we have crackpots like these trying to destroy the American as well as the global economies, what choice do they have? We are unstable and no one wants to depend on something that is undependable, and subject to the wims of irresponsible people. They have no choice but to seek viable alternatives. And Lord help us with the value of the dollar as we face another go round of this in January.
