Turtle Caught Near FPL Turkey Point and Homestead AFB: No Eyes, No Jaw, No Nostrils ... by gimleteye

A guide who fishes Southern Biscayne Bay recently sent the following:
"These photos are from a Florida cooter I grabbed as it was washing out into the bay during heavy weather and flow from Military Canal (draining Homestead Air Force Base) which is very close to FPL Turkey Point. I was able to shovel the turtle into my boat with the push pole. The turtle was swimming without any particular direction. As soon as it was in the boat, even with the waves bouncing and storm overhead, it started walking around then straight to me which is very odd behavior for a turtle. Then I noticed the turtle was severely deformed. It didn't have eyes, no nostrils and no jaw ... just a hole. Somehow it had survived. A local zoo agreed to take the turtle. The people in the zoo were fascinated and came to the conclusion that it was injured young and survived. I don't buy it. This turtle is deformed."

I am the last person to defend FPL but it seems extremely unlikely that the turtle's condition has anything to do with Turkey Point. The injured young explanation makes far greater sense than a nuclear mutant ala the three eyed fish in the Simpsons. If anything, it would be more likely associated with Homestead ARB, which has well-documented problems with groundwater contamination. The sediments in Military Canal are so highly contaminated that the government had to line the bottom with concrete several years ago.

FPL Nuclear Power Plant Turkey Point has been poisoning Florida's waters since it was built. Every Acronym has just raised the bar on how much pollution that plant has been releasing for 40 years. It is a fact that the FPL grid is a mess and Turkey Point is a nightmare. They have been robbing Peter to pay Paul since Reagan and we are in a lot of trouble. FPL has been mixing money taking from Operations and Maintenance to cover huge dividends and insane salaries while the grid is falling apart. In the rate case before the Public Service Commission FPL will not even approach the issues 7 to 23 in the settlement because the grid and the clean up of Turkey Point will bankrupt Florida and every FPL customer. Enron times pi is coming our way.Sadly the turtle has more brains and knowledge then most who turn a blind eye to the destruction of Florida on a daily basis................
