Former Hudstead Mayor Steve Shiver is Now Former Opa Locka City Manager. By Geniusofdespair

Former Steve Shiver - Opa Locka Mayor Myra Taylor
I don't think Former Steve was totally at fault with this one (really!). Opa Locka's finances are a mess. The city just didn't want it broadcasted all over the State of Florida and Hudstead's Steve Shiver isn't one to keep quiet. Accused of soliciting a bribe early in his Opa Locka career, on behalf of the Mayor, you knew his days were numbered. After only about 3 months in office he got the boot for airing Opa Locka's dirty laundry: Massive debt. He gets $87,500 severance pay.

Shiver did find a lot of money missing from Opa Locka's coffers. But the City doesn't want to know about it nor do they want us to know about it. They have had 5 city managers in 5 years. Opa Locka: You can't run, you can't hide.

Two Commissioners in Opa Locka - might as well be all of them.
This is a city that should be dismantled. How do you do that?

They are going to pay a lot more than $80 some thousand. How can the state sit there and not do something about dissolving the city. They obviously can't manage themselves or the city.

Where is the $40,000,000 they got for roads and other projects in 2014?

Did Shiver solicit the bribe to get rid of the mayor?

They don't have money to pay him severance if they can't pay their other employees or their bills to begin with. They are literally bankrupt from everything I've read recently.

Opa Locka and Miami Beach should have been dissolved many years ago. Voters should have this placed on the ballot. The state won't do anything and doesn't want to bring attention to all the problems. You will notice that Miami Beach has a hush-hush policy on scandals now. No prosecutions, which keeps everything hidden. A horrible situation for residents.

Wow pathetic. One of the most violent cities in the nation (#1 ten years ago), so they have many problems.

And New Times just ran a piece yesterday with the worry about Opa Locka being gentrified. Not likely.

The City has a per capita income of just $11,819 (really) and a median household income of just $20,338 with 40% of its residents living in poverty. There is no way that the city could ever support itself and it does need to simply be folded back into Miami-Dade County. The question is what happens to all its debts and obligations? Do all County tax payers have to bail them out?

During the past two decades, cities began splitting away from M-D County. This incorporation fury was led by individuals who saw it as a way of becoming powerful and rich. In many cases, it has led to catastrophic results. In other cases, such as Sweetwater, although long-established, corrupt and mainly, inept leadership has destroyed the cities. For the sake of the residents, the State must step in.

Easy, Call W out of retirement, put him in charge and it will be mission accomplished in no time.

Miami Dade County Commissioner Barbara Jordan who represents Opa Locka had this to say: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8E_zMLCRNg

The mayor is pissed because it was uncovered how much money she owes.
