Terrorizing Miami readers in the age of anxiety: The Miami Herald and El Nuevo Herald … by gimleteye

An observer dryly notes: "So, El Nuevo Herald endorses Rick Scott over the weekend in an editorial that doesn't even mention the environment and glosses over his abysmal record on everything else, from health care to education to women's rights.‪#‎Shameless‬ As a public service to its readers, I suggest El Nuevo Herald run the St. Pete Times editorial, "The Rick Scott record: an environmental disaster."

In its bifurcated gubernatorial endorsements (The Miami Herald for Crist, El Nuevo for the worst governor in Florida history) McClatchy is perpetuating wedge politics in a region that has had its fill. OK, the newspaper business -- if there is one -- is appealing to demographics and advertisers, but with so much at stake for Florida, wouldn't you expect a meeting of the McClatchy minds at the Heralds, or did that turn to dust so long ago that not even its trace can be found?

And the Denver Post endorsed Tea Party extremist Cory Gardner.

Newspaper endorsements mean nothing to nobody these days...except the newspapers. And the idealogues who can then use them to try to sway the non-ideologues.

The editorial endorsements of a major city's newspaper should mean something. Even when you disagree, they
should be reasoned arguments supporting candidates who have integrity, and are Running in the public interest and have a solid record of a accomplishments. Rick Scott meets none of those requirements on any issue. How could El Nuevo Herald endorse Scott?

Perhaps El Nuevo Herald should rescind its endorsement based on facts that they were obviously unaware of - such as the the fact that Scott's "job-creation" creds are a complete fabrication, or a "fairy tale" as the St. Pete Times called it in this piece:
http://www.tampabay.com/opinion/editorials/editorial-rick-scotts-economic-fairy-tale/2203583

Surely if the editors of El Nuevo Herald had read this, they wouldn't have touted Scott as the jobs creator he isn't:

"The incumbent casts himself as the jobs governor as he flies on his personal jet from ribbon cutting to ribbon cutting. Yet his signature economic program, promising tens of millions in tax breaks in return for creating jobs, has produced little. More than $266 million in tax incentives have been pledged in return for creating more than 47,000 jobs, but through August just 2,430 jobs have been created — or about 5 percent of promised total"

I stopped reading the Herald when they transformed it into a gay blog.

Failing to mention the environment in an editorial endorsing the Governor of Florida is a major misstep - a breach of journalistic integrity. Particularly significant is Governor "I'm not a scientist" is a Climate denier. Not good for a state that is mostly coastline, that includes cities like Miami, one of the world's most vulnerable to sea level rise.

Now we also find out that Scott just out and out lied about his commitment to combat sea level rise. The $350 million figure he cited for climate change preparedness - a complete fabrication.
Politicafact calls it "Mainly False." http://www.politifact.com/florida/statements/2014/oct/29/rick-scott/florida-spending-350-million-deal-sea-level-rise/

About the claims, one baffled Keys official said,
"I have no idea what he's talking about. It's the first I've heard of it," said Monroe County Commissioner Heather Carruthers, who serves on the Southeast Florida Regional Climate Change Compact, in an interview with the Florida Keys Keynoter."

Politifact couldn't find one Broward or Miami-Dade project to justify those claims made at the debate. "No one could pinpoint a specific project."

The ruling:

"Scott said during the CNN debate, "We have spent $350 million to deal with sea-level rise" in the Miami area and "hundreds of millions dollars to deal with coral reefs."

The state has spent $100 million to help the Keys upgrade to a sewer system, which should improve water quality -- a benefit for coral reefs. Scott omits that it was under Crist that the Legislature passed a law paving the way for the money, and he's wrong to come it's "hundreds of millions."

Scott’s office also pointed to a list of projects including flood mitigation, flood maps and beach protection -- and throws in the $100 million for the sewer project -- to make his claim about $350 million to deal with sea-level rise. While these include worthy projects, experts say they aren't directly related to addressing future sea-level rise. They’re typical projects for Florida, not new measures to address climate change.

"MOSTLY FALSE."
That's pretty much sums up Rick Scott. Hope the voters see it, too.

When you look at how Crist destroyed our economy, it was an easy decision to endorse Scott.

El Nuevo Herald should never have endorsed someone who is a climate denier as Miami is ground zero for sea level rise.

What is can you expect from a newspaper who hires Miriam Marquez as editor? Unless you've forgotten, it was Marquez and Bernardette Pardo who got Carlos Gimenez elected with glowing endorsement columns. Marquez was rewarded with the cushy job because she runs a newspaper that fails to report the corruption that goes on in this county. Do yourself a favor, cancel your subscription to both of those rags of newspapers. They resemble more Granma than a respectable newspaper. The only good use for either paper is to line bird cages and wrap fish.

I'm agreeing more and more with South Miami's try to divide us into two states. But how do we get El Nuevo Herald people to move to North Florida?
Maybe Scott can offer them a job up there?

It is a play on poor misguided Cubans. The other Hispanics know the reality of the situation.

Via 9/11 "pilots", Florida has already shown that it's the best place to situate infiltrators. Rick Scott is a sleeper cell from another planet. We are doomed.

a house divided will fall? wait, Herald fell when everyone realized they were a major feeder of the real estate crash...i look to central florida newspapers for real Florida news and insight.
FIU frat voting for Scott- makes sense , that generation is as selfish and greedy as the man they claim to have voted for.

When Scott campaigns with Jeb Bush and climate denier Marco Rubio in Hialeah Sunday - will the Spanish-language press ask him about Climate Change, about his dismal record protecting the environment in Florida?

Rick Scott kills jobs when he failed to protect the envirinment. Just ask the Realtors working in Palm Beach after the Indian River lagoon fiasco. Lost property values and no sales.
