Here Comes the Judge - I Hope Not! By Geniusofdespair

Anyone else have the hebejebes?

I am surprised by some of the prominent lawyers giving to Renier Diaz de la Portilla's run for judge. Are the other candidates really that bad?

Here is what one reader said:
outstanding members of the bar willling to lend their name to this six year lawyer with practically NO experience whatsoever practicing law and a very dubious past - 3 years to get into the bar after graduation.
The family holds title to the largest election law violations in the history of Florida - Renier as a school board member - proposed banning Michelle Obama from coming to a public school in Dade - proposed random drug testing of students - then used taxpayer dollars to send a mailing of his school board newsletter to his brother's probable Senate District - great integrity for someone seeking a judicial position.  And the FOP has endorsed him.
How many endorsements will he get or checks that are given because Miguel is in the Senate or Alex was - and how many because of the outstanding credentials he brings to this race?
And Resorts World giving to a judicial candidate - really?
Here are some lawyers supporting Renier:

Ben Kuehne; Ronald Book; Nelson Diaz,; John Arcia; The Haggard Law firm; Stewart, Tilghman, Fox; Lori Weems;  Lydecker, Lee, Berga et al; Asly Darius; Weiss Serota; Michael S. Popok; and of course Resorts World gave $2,000 from 2 different companies. If I didn't like the other judge I wouldn't endorse and lend my name to someone who I "sort of endorse" as the lesser of two evils. Some of the above held fundraisers for Renier.

All I can think of is, these lawyers are looney. If the pretty woman wins, then what?  She has some strange backers for a judge as well.  I don't know who I would vote for in this race but Renier, he would never get my endorsement. I suppose as the lesser of two evils, we could become the County of beautiful judges...most are. It seems she switched to another race.  It is hard to keep up with judges, they switch around to where they think they can win.

I seem to recall a First Lady coming to visit at my daughter's public school, but the First Lady was Columba Bush. And that was after the failure to pay customs duties incident. But I don't recall anyone on the school board making an issue over it. Humm, let's see, whey would they have a problem with Michelle Obama but not Columba Bush? Let me think...

Because Columba Bush never derided the US as Muchelle Obama has.

Sorry: Michelle

Elected judges are a huge problem.

Lawyers are forced to practice in front of judges they oppose, with huge consequences to their clients. So it is a legalized 'shake down'. Some lawyers 'beg off' by saying 'I think the system is unethical and thus do not donate and endorse'...which is less productive than backing the winner.

Support the likely winner or your clients' pay.

Of course, a judge that would penalize a lawyer for supporting an opponent is unfit to be a judge...but that aptly describes the de la Portilla clan.

Looks like Veronica Xiques Diaz is also a winner

Explain. Don't just leave a link

Veronica Xiques Diaz is a favorite of the outdoor advertising industry. As a City Attorney she aided and abetted billboard lobbyists and weak elected officials as they violated the Federal Highway Beautification Act for their own gain.

She does what she is told At the city. She is very smart, sharp lady, definitely the better candidate. (Who wouldn't be running against Renier. God help us if he wins. No fair trials in his future.

Time to leave Miami Dade County.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Diaz this weekend in Sunny Isles. I can tell you she is a real person who deeply cares about our community. She is untainted (whomever posted the link about her former husband should be better informed!), experienced and ethical. I will get my entire building behind her. We need experienced, well tempered lawyers who don't need to repay favors as our judges.

City of Miami Attorneys including but not limited to ex-Attorney Julie Bru are awfully quick to "break the rules". Seems typical of that City's legal staff. Not a good trait in a Judge.

Don't know why Braman would contribute to Diaz. He must have not known that she was involved in the Miami Marlins deal as an assistant city attorney. Or its the DDLP factor. Who knows

Those City attorneys sure play fast and loose with the rules.

Are any of you looking at who she is running against? I mean really, that is scary to me.

Veronica Xiques Diaz is opposing Incumbent Judge William "Bill" Altfield.

Here is what lawyers at the courthouse are saying about the race.

so who is Renier running against???

There is going to be an issue with a VIP gift given to Veronica Diaz for the Ultra Music Festival. Apparently, the tickets were valued at close to $2,000.00. We should get rid of electing judges. It is to a large extent a beauty contest not having anything to do with competence. Oh well.

Hahaha! You gotta love the dirty politics in Miami! DLP aka Mr. Ethics, supporters trying to go after Veronica for work related issues. Why doesn't the public google DLP? Read the results and make up ur own minds.

Lol. "Work-related" issues are off limits? What is more relevant to a judicial race than a lawyer's professional conduct at work? Sounds like Genius is protecting someone or something. Did she get free tix too?
