The Best Performance I Ever Saw on Broadway. By Geniusofdespair

This is the only video I could find of Jennifer Holliday's performance of her signature song "And I Am Telling You" from the 1981 Broadway hit "Dreamgirls." I was lucky enough to see her live and I was holding my breath watching her. It was the best thing I ever saw on Broadway.

The video quality sucks but the sound is good. To save time start the video at 3:30 on the counter. You will see why, although Jennifer Hudson was very good in the movie, she could never reach the heights of Jennifer Holliday, who earned a Tony, Drama Desk Award and a Grammy for this performance.

I saw her shortly after that show opened. The buzz about her was incredible but nothing could prepare you for what it felt like to sit in the theater with other people and hear her belt out that song. The hair on my arms and the back of my head stood up. Her voice was so powerful, so ripe with emotion and the proximity to her in the theater was thrilling. When she finished, it was a with spontaneous emotion that the audience jumped from their seats, applauding and yelling "Brava! Brava!" I have never experienced anything like that before or since. I hope that I remember that song, her singing it and the emotions I felt for the rest of my life. It will be the closest I ever come to believing in a God because nothing could be more beautiful and clearly not manmade.

...and all I could find was this badly recorded video of that momentous performance. Very sad.

Last Anonymous, very well put. The other couple we were with...the husband slept through it. How I don't know. It was awe on the face of everyone else who saw the performance.
