Rebeca Sosa: Why the special treatment for Lynda Bell? By Geniusofdespair
Committee Chairmanships were the next best thing for a County Commissioner to get (after Chairmanship of the whole Commission). Ruling a Committee was sought after by the remaining Commissioners. Also, one Commissioner got to be the Vice Chair of the Commission instead of getting a Commission Chairmanship. There were never enough Chairmanships to go around because there weren't as many Committees as Commissioners. You could tell the favorites of the Chair by what Committee a Commissioner got to be Chairman of. The Committee assignments were done weeks after the election of the Chair and Vice Chair.
Well, this time around, not only did Lynda Bell get the Chairmanship of one of the most powerful Committees, Economic Development and Port of Miami Committee, she also got to be the Vice Chair of the County Commission. I think she is the first Commissioner to have both. Why did Sosa ALSO give her a Committee Chairmanship when she was already Vice Chair is the big question? From the news releases from Bell's office, you would think she is the most powerful person on the Commission, and I am beginning to think she is. She sure gets those quotes in the newspapers.
Did you hear much about some of the other County Commission Vice Chairs like Audrey Edmonson, Katy Sorenson and Pepe Diaz? It was pretty much ceremonial with them, I can't even remember all the Vice Chairs because they never made a big deal of being Vice Chair except they got the gavel when the Chair was away. I keep calling Lynda the Co-Chair in error because that is what she acts like: Rebeca Sosa's equal. You can't have two queens on the throne.
