Gimenez fires Lorenzo, absentee ballot and campaign manager, who may be working for M-D Democrats? ... by gimleteye

The Miami Herald reports today that the campaign of Mayor Carlos Gimenez quickly fired Al Lorenzo once it was disclosed that Lorenzo's firm, Quantum Results, employed a convicted felon. Called a "veteran political consultant and lobbyist", Lorenzo certainly knows how campaigns are waged in Miami-Dade. But there may be more to this "live by the sword, die by the sword" story.

Yesterday, a blogger for Daily Kos named "Armando" reported that Lorenzo, who has primarily affiliated with Republican campaigns, had been retained by The Miami-Dade Democratic Party. Hmmm.

The Daily Kos' blogger cited Lorenzo's close association as a campaign consultant to Marco Rubio. Lorenzo was essentially responsible for Rubio's first victory to the Florida legislature. Now, according to the blogger, Lorenzo's affiliation with former Miami mayor Manny Diaz led to a contract working for Democrats in this November's election. Wonder if that had something to do with his being dropped by Gimenez like a hot potato. The Herald doesn't say.

Given that Gimenez has a major democratic fundraiser as his fundraising director, I doub't that anyone doing work for Democrats has anything to do with Big Al's departure. Seems like a stretch.

At a public meeting this spring, the Miami-Dade DEC chairman announced that there would be a significant investment in an absentee ballot program for this cycle. I assumed at the time that he meant training of volunteers or some kind of technology for mail-in GOTV efforts. But I work on a state campaign, and never saw any sign of a visible absentee program.

The absentee ballot program promoted so ardently by the chairman was contingent upon his other ardent claim that he had obtained two $50,000 donations (one from Bill Nelson's campaign and another from the state party). He never got the money and the absentee ballot program was never mentioned again. Chickens are coming home to roost for the chairman.

He was an organizer for Obama. He is a registered Democrat.

He is the only mentor other than Bush who Rubio thanked in his inauguration speech as State House speaker.

Petey, being a registered Democrat does not mean any more than being a registered Republican. It could be a matter of convenience for business or personal issues.

Carlos Gimenez also fired Francois Illias. Illias takes money from the reviled outdoor advertising industry. The outdoor advertising continues to buy influence from greedy elected officials.

Francois Illias is being investigated...
