County Commissioner Joe Martinez sent out this email. I think it is very odd. Is he paving the way for his Mayoral Campaign? I think so, he is mining emails and increasing his countywide name recognition. Look at the way he signed this email. He was elected as chair by the rest of the County Commissioners. It usually means they pick the one one who they think will do right by them. WE, THE VOTERS, DO NOT PICK/ELECT THE CHAIR. To us he is just the District 11 Commissioner. Anyway, Joe signs this email as CHAIRMAN OF MIAMI DADE COUNTY, when he should have signed it, County Commission Chair. Delusions of grandeur fella? I think so. You are not Chairman of the County, you are only Chairman of that Godawful County Commission. All the "I's" (5) in this memo should have been "We". Joe, we only have ONE* countywide elected official governing us: Carlos Gimenez, the Mayor. Get off of his turf.
(*We do have the Countywide elected Clerk and Property Appraiser but they do not Govern us.)
I shot the sheriff, but I didn't shoot no deputy. (I have decided to end my posts with song references for awhile, till I get bored)

Since there is no active link to the survey it is impossible to know what the purpose of the survey serves. Is it the same useless survey on his Chairman's website? As for his ego, recall that Chairman Martinez was very much in charge until the election of Mayor Gimenez. Now that he is simply in charge of the intellectual cesspool we call the County Commission, I am sure he will continue his quest for real power. Look for some real surveys paid for with newly formed 527s.
You should encourage Joe to run maybe that way when he loses (and he will) we will be rid of him once and for all.
You should tell him how great he looks in all those pictures and what a great job he's done plastering his name on everything in his district and how the citizens of his district him respect him and want to emulate him especially how he dug himself out of bankruptcy and the way he got that great deal on his lot and got his house built for peanuts. Whats not to LIKE?
" I don't know, I don't know,munterch I don't know where Im a gonna go when the Miami budget blows"
While this is your blog and you are entitled to write whatever you see fit, I think you should perhaps encourage people to fill out the survey so that the Chairman's office can learn what you think needs improvement in our community.
I looked up the survey and read the questions and believe it would be more beneficial to answer them than to suspect an ulterior motive. Frankly, this type of bashing is not helping anyone. There are certainly real problems in our local government, but complaining about personalities and searching for something when there may not be anything to find, is not assisting anyone with finding a real solution.
I think your blog, which I read regularly, would be a great place for you to reach out to many people in order for the Chairman to receive more feedback. Whatever your feelings about him, he is the Chairman of the Board and the Board is going to have the final say on the budget. The fact that he intends to run for Mayor is frankly irrelevant at this juncture.
And while his position may have been chosen by his peers, there is still something to be said about that fact that this is his second go around. That is certainly not something to belittle simply because you do not like him. He's the leader on the budget and this survey may actually be a good idea---although you may never wish to admit it.
After reading your post I took the time to look at the survey. It has some interesting questions and if he takes the answers seriously (since he is running for office) we have a great opportunity to voice our priorities. He is running against a man who for the moment is playing all the right cards. We need to take advantage of this and try to get Joe to see our view and be part of making the changes necessary to fix OUR County.
Like the person above said, let us not just complain but try to be part of the solution.
i looked at the survey.
If he really cared what the public thinks, he would treat the people who go down to city hall with more respect. Surveys like this are not always on the up and up but knock yourself out and fill it out. Do you know what a push poll is? Sometimes you can use the county to pay for your polling by doing a survey. I have done similar surveys over the years and I even went to all day events sponsored by the county where we were given little paper circles that we were to paste on issues that we thought were important. A book came out on the results and I am sure it is up on a shelf near his office. I don't think your lecture is warranted and it was annoying. I have enough experience with the county to know when I am being conned. This isn't about my personal dislike of Martinez, it is about a long history of his disdain for the public and a litany of bad votes by him. He is one of the unreformable majority. You have to earn my trust. He hasn't.
Still to this day if you get a business card of Commissioner Javier Souto it reads "Senator" Javier Souto because many years ago he was a state legislator in Tallahassee.
The Board of County Commissioners has left the ground not rooted in the County Charter but living in the clouds.
They relish in being addressed as "Chairman" and "Senator" instead of seeing their public office as the public servants that they are.
They cannot distinguish between the perpetual elective office they hold and fleeting individual that holds it.
They think government service is all about themselves.
In America we are governed by law not by men, fair play and the rule of law.
These county commissioners, and the county government of which they are supposed to be merely overseers of, have become incrementally a corrupt culture of brinkmanship and one-upmanshiip all onto itself.
They live a fantasy within a local easy no risk tax collecting public sector world together with those that now work in county government all onto themselves.
They are not cognizant of the public servants they are supposed to serve and to be holding the public trust, but self serving elitists detached from the real world of the taxpayer citizens in the private sector struggling to make a living providing for themselves and their own while still paying for the luxury life style and lifetime millionaire like benefits of the local public sector.
It's gotten sick really, lamentable and sick.
G.O.D. is not complaining. He is doing what he always does, interpreting his take on a situation.
Some of you are new to County politics. You just don't realize what it is like. Having been to dozens of UDB meetings, I know firsthand what goes on down there and G.O.D. is spot on. The dumb little survey - they don't care a lick about what you say. Here is the link if you want to do it:

Thanks for the link. It wasn't a push poll. I found something strange. It said email optional. I didn't fill it out. But when I returned to the poll it said I already filled it out however I didn't. How did they know my computer was there?
G.O.D. you are SO hypocritical! you do not let me post calling gimenez the INTERIM MAYOR, but you can create posts and title them with "Little Bully Joe Martinez...", whats up with that?!?!
im sure this post will not make it, but i just wanted to let you know.
Have a great day! :)
Putz.
He is not an interim Mayor. He is the mayor. You my friend are an idiot. And why did you write it in uppercase? You have a beef with Gimenez. Very obvious, I would delete you.
Martinez is a vindictive angry little man who bullies his way anywhere and gets what he wants from people by intimidation. The sad part is he's pretty smart most of the time and would be a pretty good commissioner if he wasn't such a bully.
The sense of grandeur runs iin his staff as well- they are all legends in their own mind.
But wow talk about a deceptive tactic- the way he signed
We should encourage the majority of the commission to run for mayor-once they formally declare, they must give up their commission seat. In the County, it's practically the only way to get new blood on the board (unless they get arrested or recalled).
I find it hysterical how everyone is criticizing all the Commissioners and we forget that our precious Mayor was a former Commissioner as well and had he not run for Mayor he would have been sitting pretty in Commissioner till he was ready to be placed in a retirement home. If you are going to talk out of the side of your neck then get you head out of our precious Mayor’s bum for a minute to compare his voting record as a commissioner to Martinez and you will be able to see that they are almost identical. They have similar views and even the Mayor has stated that in interviews he has done. I won’t sit here and disagree that our Politicians (OUR MAYOR INCLUDED) have made some terrible decisions, because they truly have, but we as residents of Miami-Dade County are as much if not more at fault for what is happening in this county. When the grand majority of this community was flying high buying homes at absurd prices and racking up those credit cards no one was even looking at or caring about what the county was doing or how much they were hiking things up. They even elected big spender Alvarez for a second term to rob us blind. It’s easy to continue pointing the finger but how about we point the finger at ourselves for a bit. We complain that all the candidates we get every election are crooked politicians so why doesn’t anyone new drop their name in the hat? How about we for once get off our butt and exercise our right to vote instead of just leaving it to 10% of the population and then spend the next four years huffing and puffing about it.
The property appraiser does govern us. He sets property values and could have us all homeless in a year. We need to look seriously, at that department for the poor investigations they perform in order to get money from us. I have heard of several people that have lost their property based on the tax assessors squad who just slap liens on peoples property. I have also heard that they slap liens on property so their friends, family and themselves can get the property cheap and not pay full price. I also have heard that a small group of people are involved in this scam. Next time I will call two names.
For whatever its worth, I answered the survey. My wants: Don't move the Line, control the Lobbyists, give up all government cars and take public transportation (including mayor and commishes, and really start checking contractors that are presently working without licenses and proper insurance that are driving businesses like ours into the ground. I'm sure my survey will hit the DELETE button quickly.
I have been reading this blog for some time now and this is the first time in a long time that I am content with the discussion between all my fellow bloggers. Gimenez is a career politician just like all the rest and just becuase he is doing all the popular moves now does not necessarily mean that they will be the right ones to put this County on track.
I filled out the survery as well and agree that County needs to work on public transportation.. if they use it I am sure they would make certian it worked properly and went to the places most needed.
I am interested in seeing Comm. Martinez' and Comm. Suarez' proposal to use the railroad tracks like in Chicago as an alternative to public transportation.
Gimenez was making the right moves when he was fire chief, when he was City Manager, when he was a County Commissioner (voted against Stadium, union contract increases, tax increases) and so far so good as Mayor. The last two anon's are just out to lunch!
