I Don't Get People Sometimes. By Geniusofdespair

Here is a part of the Miami Herald poll I just don't get. When people were asked what services they favored cutting instead of raising their taxes, almost 25% favored cutting Parks and Recreation services. Almost 60% of the people polled said they would rather raise the sales tax than property tax (29%) and 50% support more gambling, specifically in Downtown Miami and Miami Beach. Who are these people?

Eliminate wasteful and counterproductive entitlements and public transportation.

Slash the bloated police and fire Dept budgets. Cut county staff by 70%

Repeal the stupidity of anti-gambling laws

Cut Taxes

There..Wasn't that easy? I fixed the budget.

Why am I not surprised? And how come you are, Genius? Don't you know this community is mainly composed by brainless jerks who probably have trouble writing their own names!

I read that entire article this morning and it's interesting.

I've never understood why anyone would want to cut anything having to do with parks & recreation. They are such an asset to our community.

I think Gimenez said it best in regard to some County funded Construction projects - (paraphrasing) The County needs to issue bonds to pay for them - hence, more debt service. He's right.

It would be interesting to see the age demographics on this poll, we are such a melting pot down here, I honestly don't think race would make a huge difference.

If nothing else, this was a very interesting and enlightening read.

Here are my thoughts on Sales Tax vs. Property Tax

1.) Everyone pays Sales Tax
2.) I can control how much I pay in taxes, with sales tax, by modifying my behavior and spending.
3.) With property taxes, the amount I pay is controlled by a number of factors that I have no control over (i.e. - politicians, property values, developers, my neighbors)

And don't give me that "a sales tax is a regressive tax that hurts the poor more than the rich" argument. Essentials, like foods, and medicines are exempt.

Wake up people! Either we come to the realization that the free ride for the Lazy, special interest groups is over now or the cuts will be much more painful in the future.

The County Government Must get back to proper, essential services and cut the feel good programs and stop paying off the Unions

This poll looks like it was written by county employees. Why weren't people instead asked if they want to cut excessive county salaries, executive benefits, commissioner slush funds, take-home police cars, bogus "government affairs" jobs for political hacks, etc.
