New TSA rules ... by gimleteye

Eliminate the agency. Take down the Xray machines, the puffers, and the thousands standing around. From now on, when a plane gets blown up by terrorists, control of Congress shifts from one party to the other, irrespective of numerical advantage. Use terrorism to get what we need: a Congress that works.

I actually would prefer the US use the El Al model for screening. I think that would simplify the whole process. I've flown from Isreal within the past two years and didn't have any problems or concerns. However, when I flew from Chicago to Miami last year, I was treated like a terrorist because I guess the under wire in my bra set off the metal detector and I was wanded once, then patted down.

I should write, I'm anglo, was dressed in casual sports wear with my wedding ring, nice watch and designer bag. Yea, I really fit a terrorist profile.

In the meantime, a family of four was behind me, they went straight through while I almost missed my flight waiting to get patted down - again! The family of four seemed to appear Muslim with full head wraps and scarfs.

Yea, the TSA is really effective - NOT!

The Patriot Act is alive and well with the US government listening to your phone calls and reading your email and no one is phased. The TSA amping up ways to protect you on your flight and the outrage is loud. WTF?

What about the cities in Broward photographing your license plate when you enter their boundaries...that is even worse- Parkland ( in planning stage) Lighthouse Point and Hillsboro Beach have them already. Better not get a lover in those cities because your wife could use the info in divorce court.

Or, are these new machines more employee intensive thus requiring yet another inflation of the government payroll ?

I agree that the El Al model for screening should be adopted in the US. Profile passengers, for God's sakes. The idea of patting down middle aged women is just ridiculous. How many Israeli planes have been blown up in the past thirty years, mid-air? Every time I go through a US airport at see the TSA, I think: the terrorists are getting just what they wanted.

I heard soon the TSA will be offering a VIP area with private full body searches for middle aged men by curvatious 25 yeras old women, the men will have to bring their own libations and toys. PLease remember to take your viagara one hour before flying.
Also remember to bring extra cash, "Happy Endings" not included.
Depending on the results of this pilot program similar options will be offered to the ladies as well as gay and lesbian travelers.
Bon Voyage

The El Al model is racist and would require many many many more workers if implemented here on the scale the US would require.

The threat the Israelis face isn't exploding planes, its exploding pizza places.

Miaexile, I don't think so. They are not simple government employees at El Al, like the TSA is here. Have you gone through an airport in Isreal? Please do and let me know your thoughts. If you have, and still have the same opinion - well, I simply agree to disagree.

The employees in Israel are selected for their intelligence and trained to identify problem people just by speaking back and forth. Our employees would probably flunk third grade, therefore they need machine help.

miaexile is wrong; El Al profiles behavior, not race. And the system used by the TSA is neither effective or wise.

The threat the Israelis face isn't exploding planes, its exploding pizza places.

That's because terrorist can't get into Israel's airports.

But terrorists can get into our airports. A suicide bomber could easily stand in line with the other passengers, and wait until they are in the middle of the crowd where they would do the most damage. And they can do it because the TSA is securing the planes not the airport. Idiots.

Maybe we should have started speaking up 20 years ago when they examined our urine before we could get hired. All of this "security" is about making money (drug testing, tsa, traffic cameras), not about keeping us safer.

The enhanced practices begun earlier this month have lowered security theater to the level of security burlesque.

These measures don't address the real threats and -- what is worse -- those implementing know that.

How about this....Have seperate flights for those who refuse to be searched.

Quick: how many airports does El Al fly out of?

Quick: How many planes do they have?

Quick: How many passengers do they process annually?

Folks, really. Do some thinking before proposing a very efficient system that has absolutely no compatibility to the U.S. aviation world.

To do what the Israelis do would be cost prohibitive un the U.S. unless, of course, you think the American public would pull themselves away from American Idol long enough to pay double or triple the taxes they are today.

Brain power, people.

I flew many times out of Heathrow (London) during the IRA "troubles." Everyone was stopped at the checkpoint and asked a series of questions, with the agent staring into your eyes. It was scary and intense but I don't believe many bombers got past them. That's what happens when you hire educated, trainable professionals instead of whatever TSA hires.

I think the entire terrorist threat is out of whack. The TSA would let a bomb the size of a piano get by and the excuse later would be "we thought it was an elephant".The people who say man up would be the first to scream if a TSA agent diddled their daughter. The american people need to say uncle no more.Fly at your own risk,Our rights are what our forefathers fought for and the sheeple continue to say its okay to violate our them. It's just sick.No more feel ups no more crap.

We have to be grateful. At least we are not required to submit to body cavity searches. . .

I also remember flying back and forth from Heathrow during the height of the IRA bombings. It wasn't until the mid 80's they brought in the bomb/drug sniffing dogs. But, they always had the security asking questions, not feeling me up or taking a naked photo of me!

Who has the X Ray scanner contract?

I would hate to be the TSA workers working near the machines. If the pilots and flight attendants are concerned, I would think the screeners would be terrified. Is anyone talking about them? No.

Quick: Why aren't you paying attention?

Apparently, you were too quick in your reply. El Al is an airline! As someone already mentioned, we should be talking about securing the airports.

In a Canadian newspaper, a former head of the Israel Airport Authority is paraphrased:

"...it makes more sense to create a 'trusted traveller' system so pre-approved low-risk passengers can move through an expedited screening process. That would leave more resources in the screening areas, where automatic sniffing technology would detect any explosive residue on a person or their baggage."

This seems like a nice idea. Instead of spending our time/money groping people, give the low-risk passengers a quick way through. That might leave some resources that will allow you to keep the Nigerian-Muslim, whose dad told us has been radicalized, out of the system. We wouldn't even have to find his explosive underwear.

I'm flying on Friday and looking forward to a little manual manipulation. It's been boring at home lately.

If you don't like the security, ie government intrusion, at your local airport: DRIVE.

Some of us want safe flights without you holding up the line for the rest of us.

Nobody's forcing you to get on a plane.

Ah! The new mantra of the ignorant.
If it doesn't bother YOU, then it must be OK. All others can go to hell. If their job requires flying, fuck 'em. They can get another job.
For the record, the government can't (supposedly) force you to give up your rights to receive a 'privilege'.
Maybe, while you're in the TSA line, you can try reading.

Here is the right in question:

"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."
