The State Representative Races in Districts 116 & 119. By Geniusofdespair

Carlos Manrique campaign for State Representative has some troublesome campaign contributions, like the law firm of Bercow Radell & Fernandez. He has lots of Police Benevolent Association money and Shoma Homes owner, Shojaee Masoud kicked in some major bucks. He also got money from Lobbyist Ron Book and the disgraced Wren Group. Manrique has raised $89,485. His opponent, Whilly Bermudez raised $38,195. Seems like Whilly's campaign is picking up steam as he raised $30,055 this last cycle, from 1/1 through 3/31. The only other candidate with money in this race for District 116 is Carlos Trujillio who raised $50,001. He has a lot of attorneys on his list. He did have Ramon Rasco Alvaro, but nothing else that bothered me.

In the 119th District, Katie Edwards (Farm Bureau Executive Director pictured at left) is running as a Democrat against Graziella Denny and Frank Artiles. Katie Edwards has lost a lot of weight and is looking pretty good lately. She has raised $81,375 in her campaign so far. She got two donations from a Kathryn Sorenson and $100 from Sonia Succar, Maurice Ferre's granddaughter. Mayor Cindy Lerner gave her $100, and Janet McAliley and Betsey Kaplan gave her $100 each. I mention these names as they are the core Democrats who give to women. She got a lot of farm/ag money from people like the DiMare's, Algers, etc. In fact, most of her money is related to farming. But lets not forget Bill and Doylene Losner who each gave her $500. Frank Artiles is a Republican and he has raised $96,765. Most of his money is from insurance groups -- and I do mean MOST OF IT. What the hell did he promise these insurance people? The third candidate in this race, Graziella, only raised $760.

Note to readers: I took off many of the comments -- too many things written that are allegations and could be untrue. Uncivil -- save it for your own use don't put it here. I fact check and I can't fact check your crap.

I think Whilly is a good candidate.

As to the republican turned democrat candidate, who has supported breaching the UDB and supports large farming interest, not necessarily farming, is just as bad as a candidate taking funds from the LBA to us down here.

There's nothing nice to say about a person who just doesn't think twice about anyone other than herself.

I'm sorely disappointed as to the democratic women who support her - if they actually watched her in action during public hearings and other meetings, they'd be aghast.

Shame on them too for not doing a little more research about the Farm Bureau (an insurance company), and their Board (who are large land owners). Their interests are certainly not the community as a whole.

I like Whilly as well. He seems to be doing it for the right reasons and we need a business minded person in Tallahassee.

If I lived in 116, Willy would be my choice.

Katie is a chameleon. People who have not watched her in action are missing her poor behavior.

She looks great, has a soft voice and will grab you by throat and drop your bruised body to the ground. Men have always responded well to her.

2010, you are right about Manrique, he IS a bulldog, just look at what he has done in his Community Council the last six years after several previous members were arrested for fraud. Several months ago the Herald reported that Manrique cleaned-up a corruptive council that is now the sought-after model for this community.

Just a couple of weeks ago, we read about him again, this time going after unscrupulous businesses that are siphoning money from our local workforce board. It takes guts and passion to go after these very powerful entities that are undermining the fabric of this community.

By the way, the allegations made of him by his opponent were proven false by a Judge when Manrique was awarded custody of his son.

I have known him since High School and can tell you that he is happily married with no problems or regrets on how he tackles corruptive systems with a passion to represent our community.

Katie Edwards will win. She's a great candidate. She qualified by petition, has raised substantial money and will do an execellent job representing her district. As to 116, manrique cannot win. He has too much bagage to hide. Amador and Trujillo are walking. They both qualified by petition. Bermudez didnot. I think that either amador or Trujillo take. Bermudez has a chance if he walks more.

You can rest assured Katie Edwards and the Dade County Farm Bureau (INsurance Company)will negatively take a stand against "Hometown Democracy." Why would I vote for someone like Edwards supposedly geared in Agriculture when she follows the big money land barron farmers & bankers to develop when conditions in farming change.
Farming in South Dade & Home-
stead have a long 110 year history
& will continue even with freezes, hurricanes, pests, & markets.
All kinds of farming is an ever creating business for jobs!!
Hometown Democracy, Amendment 4
is a win win for all of us.

Stop writing about candidates wives. You will be removed.

The Farm Bureau played a big role in the wrecking crew that devastated the Florida economy. One of their chosen spokespeople is not getting my vote.

You are correct. Scott Rothstein gave Thousands and hosted various fundraisers for Gov Crist. What does that have to do with Charlie Crist? Absolutely nothing.

Does anyone believe any of this crap?

I think a bull dog is what is now needed. I think the other young candidates are nice, but...for right now... with the situtation being what it is... I want and need a bulldog with a proven track record to fight for the right things. We need someone strong!!
Manrique... you have my vote and my family's vote. We are depending on you!

Listen, talking about pain clinics giving money, I have one big: I don't care. I removed your comment because you said defamatory things about a clinic that can not be substantiated and don't tell me how I should read a campaign report. I write about WHAT I CARE ABOUT NOT WHAT YOU CARE ABOUT. I looked at all the campaign reports of all the candidates. I couldn't care less if people get money from prostitutes, pimps, lunatics, pain clinics, etc. I don't care. I care about developers, lobbyists, the players. If you care about the rest...press the button in the right hand corner and start your own blog. Get off this one! I took off defamatory statements about Manrique and Bermundez. Stop already. And all of you: stop calling people crooks on this blog. You will get dumped.

And I wouldn't be particularly proud of a candidate being called a bull dog. That is insane.

^^^^Traslation - STOP bashing Katie Edwards! ^^^^

Is Katie Edwards for or against Florida Hometown Democracy?

Last Idiot - it was the OTHER district where all the comments had to be removed. Last I heard, Katie doesn't have a wife.

Manrique cleaning up corrupt councils and workforce boards????? Hahaha, are you kidding me.

This guy is part of the problem. If you don't believe it, just attend a community council meeting that he serves on. Ask the council members of how Manrique is always looking out for his own interests. Don't just read these posts, do your own due diligence!

And you can't call someone a coke head either get a grip...

Manrique is too close to Vile Natasha for my taste. Isn't he her appointee to the Community Council?
Anyone who thinks Edwards will be an environmentalist or pro-farming is nuts. Camapign contributions from the Farm Bureau Insurance Company members and Losner are a pretty good indication she has not changed.

Outside from promoting night clubs what has Whilly done? i remember getting junk mail from a bunch of clubs he use to be in every weekend. Do we really want a nightclub flyer boy to be a state rep? If i remember correctly didnt Manrique have domestic issues that made the paper years ago? dont know much about carlos trujillio but this looks like a you have got to be kidding me race thats all we have to offer between those 3 what a joke. I guess with Marin ahead of Manrique he should be the shoe in, great another guy with an attitude in politics.

This is an interesting blog site. Ask the Miami Rescue Mission (which is where I work) what Willy Bermudez has done for us. Do the same for St.Judes,American Cancer Society,Childrens Home Society, and for The Institute for Child & Family Health where he serves on the board of directors. They will all tell you that he has raised thousands of dollars for them and set forth numerous food and toy drives. You should really be informed before you make an ass of yourself by posting stupid things. I would say that Whilly has done and does more than many of the elected officials that we have here in town. By the way he's just a citizen.

FYI: I don't have to hide my identity like most of the cowards that post lies & stupid comments. My name is Melissa and there is a reason why our organization supports Whilly.

Funny how Francisco Amador appears to have the least of a shot at winning the election since no one even bashes him...

Genius, interview Katy. See if she dares.

Frank Artiles is a joke! That guy will be destroyed by the folks who are leaving the seats open in the districts cited in this article due to the horrific work he has done to disparage them and their families. Katie Edwards will, and should, win the 119 seat easily!

As for the 116 seat, Trujillo is the only one with a proper combination of money and walking. Amador is a joke. Bermudez is a joke. Manrique is the biggest of the jokes.

My family and I have and will continue to support Whilly Bermudez on ANY campaign or event he is involved in.

For District 116 - Whilly Bermudez is the best candidate.

The sign man!!!

Becareful with this guy Manrique! Very dangerous, very very dangerous. I would take Willy or Trujillo anyday.

My vote is for Trujillo. He is truly the best example of what a Belen Graduate should represent. Trujillo is a stand up guy with a good head on his shoulders.

Oddly enough Manrique is currently behind Bermudez and Trujillo for the District 116 Seat.

I guess word is getting around regarding Manrique's past.
