The Beginning of the End for Community Councils. By Geniusofdespair

Pepe Diaz, the County Commissioner who had bariatric surgery, is up to no good. This is on the Commission Agenda for September 15th:

Jose "Pepe" Diaz, Prime Sponsor

ORDINANCE RELATING TO COMMUNITY COUNCILS/COMMUNITY ZONING APPEALS BOARDS; AMENDING CHAPTER 20 ARTICLE IV AND CHAPTER 33 ARTICLE XXXVI OF THE CODE OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA (''CODE''); PROVIDING FOR APPOINTMENT OF ALL COUNCIL POSITIONS RATHER THAN ELECTION OF CERTAIN POSITIONS; MODIFYING THE NUMBER OF COMMUNITY COUNCILS/COMMUNITY ZONING APPEALS BOARDS TO NO MORE THAN FOUR; MODIFYING BOUNDARIES OF COMMUNITY COUNCILS/COMMUNITY ZONING APPEALS BOARDS TO CONFORM TO BOUNDARIES OF COUNTY COMMISSION DISTRICTS; MODIFYING COMMUNITY COUNCIL RESPONSIBILITIES; PERMITTING ELECTED AND APPOINTED MEMBERS CURRENTLY IN OFFICE TO REMAIN IN OFFICE UNTIL RESIGNATION, REMOVAL OR EXPIRATION OF TERM; PROVIDING SEVERABILITY, INCLUSION IN THE CODE AND AN EFFECTIVE DATE

If you live in Unincorporated Miami Dade, Community Councils is what you have. If they are appointed by the County Commission, what good are they? Now the positions are elected. "Modifying their responsibilities", that couldn't be good either. This is exactly what I have been telling you all, they chip away at your rights.

This is scary. The councils must be doing something right if the developers (Barreto and their attorneys, Price and Mayoral) are going after them through the commission...actually, I suppose they have been working on the commission since the first day councils became law. It would be really great, if the commissioners would get a spine and say NO.

I couldn't care less if my community council is eliminated as it is only a rubber stamp for any changes that Moss' developer friends want. It is basically run by Ken Forbes and Patricia Forbes his wife. By the way, whatever happened with the investigation against Kenny? Did the M-D Ethics Commission ever concluded it, or simply brushed it under the carpet?

I believe K Forbes was fined. I'll go through my Doc's and find the final report on this. He's keeping a low profile but that doesn't mean he's not the puppet of choice - still. Berkow used him and his "people" to support Parkland at the PAB. It was quite a show.

In regard to this Ordinance - and to the BCC - just say NO!

One has to wonder why this guy is so involved in the Homestead elections that he was a named sponsor of the Bell kick off party.

Wasn't there some controversy on who paid for that surgery? I remember something about a vote he made tied to the FREE surgery he got. Am I mistaken.

I am just curious...what does bariatric surgery have to do with community councils? Am I missing something here?

It is about the PROPOSER of the bill. The surgery was part of a controversy with the fellow and his political dealings. This was not just about the CC's it is also about the evil one that is offering the bad reform, it might be more about him...

The Chamber of Commerce has been trying to get rid of the Councils since 1998. They finally found a stooge in Diaz to be the hatchet man. People in unincorporated MD, this is your ONLY local government, warts and all. The commission won't let you incorporate and now they want to neuter the councils. You had better fight it!

which chamber of commerce?

The Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce put together a "blue ribbon" panel in 1998 to assess the community councils. This was only 2 years after councils stated. The "hearings" were packed with developers and land-use attorneys )against the councils). Only 2 or 3 citizens spoke for the councils. No one on the blue ribbon panel had never attended a council meeting! Their recommendations were just like the ones offered by Diaz; fewer councils or only one. So the Chamber is alive and well in unincorporated MD politics. About 3 years ago Sosa ask the IGs office to "study" the councils. Wonder of wonders, they also suggested the same solutions. I fear councils are doomed. By the way, some of the worst council members are those appointed by the commissioner of the area.
