Sex Offenders: Where are the bible thumpers when you need them? By Geniusofdespair

I hate the predators but not so much the sex offenders. Whatever, I am not here to figure that part out. I am just trying to understand how someone can serve their time for a crime and then be subject to living under a bridge or to live in a converted jail (that is pretty absurd but that is what they are proposing). We let murderers out of prison and many do it again, but we don't punish them like the sexual offenders. We might have a convicted murderer living next door to us this very moment and we wouldn't know it.

I just keep thinking about this because it reaches deep into my...I can't think of a word...sense of self? Soul? I think about these men and women, many afflicted with mental conditions, that on the one hand I cannot empathize with because of the nature of their crimes but on the other hand they are fellow human beings so I do. I wonder how we can all sit in our homes and think that requiring a released prisoner to live under a bridge is okay. Yes, it was amusing at first but they are there for years now! Mr. Book and Commissioner Pepe Diaz: They are not animals. Something has gone horribly wrong in Miami. I don't have any answers. I just know when something isn't right and this isn't.

State Minority Whip (Attorney General hopeful) Dave Aronberg has a fix (yes this is a FOX video but it is good):

Aronberg's bill makes sense. It is better to do what he is proposing then what is happening now. Ron Book should listen to Aronberg because Book's daughter's bitter experience has colored his thinking.

Does this mean that they are never suppose to be close to any park ever? What happens when a courthouse is near a park or a hospital? Technically, they would be breaking the law and, thus, giving others the authority to arrest them at any given time.

I believe the whole thing needs to be looked at and revamped in a way that makes sense.

Furthermore, I am worried about the college kid who drinks too much, moons someone in public, and ends up as a registered sex offender. I don't mean to over simplify, but you have to look at all the angles of this.

Genius,
Your article leaves me a bit confused (it just happens sometimes:) You talk about Rapists as if they are in a separate category from sex offenders at least that is how I am reading it. They ARE sex offenders.
Then I would like to humbly suggest a caution to you. You said that you hate predators...be careful, Florida has watered down the meaning of Predator to the point that it really has little meaning. Many used the terms interchangeably (usually for effect) but the truth is, there is not a serious difference anymore. I do thank you though, for knowing that there is a supposed difference and using the terms appropriately.

I'll fix my post to take out rapists...thanks....I appreciate all your feedback.

Ron Book overreacted to a terrible situation.

Yes. The sexual offenders and sexual predators can roam the streets all day looking for prey.

Just putting the offenders under a bridge from 11:00 pm to 6:00 am does not stop them from visiting schools and playgrounds daily. Ron Book should have studied the issue before he reacted.

I had a friend that was labeled a sex offender. She was drunk and flashed her boobs at a police officer.

So she was arrested.

She was a great personality, but she had a miserable time trying to get through college to a career that she could function in with her label.

Did the cop realize what he was doing her future? Probably not. Did he go back to the police station and yuk it up about what that drunk girl did? Youbetcha!

The point is, we have to do better at sorting it out. People such as my friend and kids screwing around who are dating are redeemable.

Are the people who are serial molesters, exposers and rapists redeemable? Maybe not... we need a scientific and certain way to know that they are.

What is astonishing though (and frightening) are numbers of people who commit deviant behavior. If most people think about it, they have been a victim or know someone who has been. What is going on?

Yes there does seem to be more people with deviant behavior. This is a very heavy topic and question you pose. It alone could take lots of time. There are all kinds of possibilities...such as...
are there really more deviant behavior or did we just used to take care of this stuff ourselves? People, families, and communities, used to handle a lot of things themselves without even THINKING of going to the law about it. Now a mom catching a couple of toddlers looking each other is calling the cops. There have been kids as young as 2 listed as sex offenders...I kid you not!
You could also say that what we consider as deviant behavior has changed. I read of a guy playing basket ball in his front yard with his kids and some neighborhood kids. While playing, this guys arm touched a girls breast...he is now on the sex offender registry.
Our entire society seems to be about sex now. TV shows even on prime time are very sexually explicit. The music and music videos are all about sex. Products are sold using sexy models and many of these models look like 14 year olds. Read the teen mags. Its crazy. Everything is sex sex sex, but DON'T DO IT! It is the most mixed up double standard. And don't let me get started about taking morality and God out of our families and our schools.
There has always been deviant behavior but it was more hushed up back in the day. Now the media (24 hours,7 days a week, multiple channels)must hype it, the politicians use it for votes, and John Q. Public has sucked in all the hysteria and myths like it was mothers milk.
Did any of that help answer your questions?

I certainly think that the mainstreaming of sex, nudity and violence is a real issue. I banned a whole bunch of stuff in my house with my kids until they were beyond what I could control. So far, so good, they are not creeps.

I do not watch tv or go to the movies. I don't care to feel stressed by violence and I don't care to watch a character's personal moments with the stranger sitting next to me.

Actually, I suppose kids can get to the point where they don't even notice the difference between the real world and the make believe situations they experience.

However, one thing that REALLY angers me is being out and watching an out-of-control parent cursing at a kid. Yelling and telling them that they are F'n stupid probably sends many kids into "looking for love in all the wrong places". Thus, so many single mom births. And more often than not, those single moms have another child or more out of a relationship. I can't believe they all are too passionate to figure out birth control.

It is those kids who are "looking for love in all the wrong places" who, according to Government financed studies, are the ones who are looking on the Internet for partners.
According to research it is these kids who are agreeing to meet, and have sex with men from the Internet. They are even the ones who initiate the contact. The EXPLOSION of problems for teens on the Internet is mostly a government fabrication and if you watch shows like (GAG) to catch a predator, about 98% of them are NOT registered sex offenders. They are just your regular guy next door.
These are troubling times. Society has changed so drastically and we are all looking for someone else to blame while we go about our own business. Then we scratch our head and wonder why our kids are a mess and the world is coming apart at the seams.
It is people like you who actually THINK about a problem and who TAKE CONTROL of family issues instead of farming that control out to others who are making a positive difference in the world.
