What a surprise every County Commissioner, except Carlos Gimenez, has a challenger. Commissioner Barbara Jordan’s challenger is Linda Faye Stephens and Dennis Moss is facing Martin Luther Lampkin. Vile Natacha Seijas has to contend with Lourdes R. Aguirre of Miami Lakes and Bruno Barreiro is facing David Yale Patlak. We previously announced that Edmonson’s challenger is Val Screen and that Whilly Bermudez is challenging the little Bully, Joe Martinez.
Lourdes Aguirre (if it is the same one) was quoted in an article about the recall of Natacha Seijas and was identified as a community activist. Martin Lampkin ran for Community Council 14 and garnered 1,668 votes. If it is the same guy, he lost. Looking at the stats in Moss's district, he would be in trouble with a Hispanic challenger.
Dave Patlak is a veteran of 25 years service in the U.S. Coast Guard. I know him, nice guy, tall friendly. He ran against Ilenana Ros-Lehtinen and lost. I’ll endorse him. He is at a disadvantage if ethnic politics rule: District 5 is 2 to 1 Hispanic.
12:59 pm: Just heard that Carlos Gimenez is re-elected, he drew no challenger. Pictured: Lourdes R. Aguirre

Viva BERMUDEZ!
For the past year Commissioner Moss has been very busy redoing bridges, sidewalks and recarpeting the section of SW 112 Ave. within the Goulds limits. It contrasts with the portion of District 8, from SW 232 St. up to SW 248 St. Goulds sports new traffic lights at almost every intersection, while the stretch in District 8 has only one at the intersection of SW 248 St. It just downed on me -Moss is up for reelection! The rest of us mortals have to wait for our turn in 2010 when our district commissioner will run for reelection. In the meantime live with the blight left along our portion of SW 112 Ave.
Lourdes Aguirre against Seijas; what a breath of fresh air! I know Lourdes and she is a hard working community servent. She does not have that viscious streak of Seijas. She is smart, honest and approachable. I know she cares about people and I suspect she cares about the environment. Sadly, the unions and developers will fall behind Seijas because she owns them. You union leaders need to talk to Lourdes and see what she has to offer rather than blindly supporting one of the most evil commissioners in a long time.
Martin Lampkin, running against Moss, is a civic activist in Perrine. He is a decent guy with few resources but his heart is in the right place. The Moss machine will be hard to beat for someone relatively unknown in the district but at least Martin is willing to give it a try.
Here's hoping Lourdes, Martin, Val, Willy, Dave and Jordan's opponent can appeal to the people who recognize we need serious change in this lousy county government.
Look at the demographics for District 9. If the whites and Hispanics get off their butts and vote we can retire MOSS. What a concept!
Very interesting.. Qualifying ends today at noon. Genius, are we going to get an update on all the races as the deadline expires?
I looked at the stats that you have above. In Barreiro's district their are about 70,000 registered voters. If 15% vote (it is an off election) that is about 10,000. It appears a person can become a commissioner with very few votes. So our government is not representative at the county level. Looking at Barreiro again, I found it interesting that on the stats they have listed: male female and other. And there were over a thousand under other. What is that third sex? Almost 35% of the voters are 65 and older.
Moss is not the problem that Seijas & Martinez are! So lets stick with this by level of importance please folks.
It is official. Commissioner Gimenez was re-elected unopposed.. The remainder really have their work cut out for them..
Congrats to Commissioner Gimenez.... a good Commissioner.
Moss is of great interest to his district which he rules like a third world dictator. County wide, he supported making citizens' petitions impossible, he voted for every ordinance to stop incorporation, he ran an illegal bus outside the UDB that we paid for, his metrozoo theme park will cost millions, his S. Dade mini-performing arts center is way over budget, he supported a dump in his district that contaminated the ground water, and so on. He ain't no angel. Yes, he voted the right way on the UDB but that's about all.
Thanks for the endorsement!
David Patlak has great ideas. Bruno Barreiro's idea for raising the sales tax to create more boondoggles in public transit was voted down even by his colleagues on the commission. It was a BAD IDEA. Patlak is way ahead so far. Go Big Dave!
David, good luck against Bruno (AKA Eddy Munster) Barreiro!! My advice, start walking door to door, and appeal to peoples good sense. Don't just sit at home, and send out mailers and signs. Those are important too, but one to one contact is the best.
GO GIMENEZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes as I said before the only way to win is to let every voter know you in person. You must go to every door. That is how I always won for my candidates.
Really Mensa, like who??
Dilworth and Clark to name only two. These were the first and then came some Judges and on and on. How come those folks from the other organization "Densa". always question me?
"Densa", how imaginative.. Dilworth, Dilworth, no, doesn't ring a bell, probably too young to know who that is. Clark.... Is that Steve Clark??? Wow, so you must be close to Brian May...
Good one Mensa. The Densa's were in diapers when you got started in your activism. They know not what politics transpired before they got on the scene, and they don't know you were a major player -- like I do. I remember back to Clark and Plummer...don't go as far back as you. Did you know Elaine Gordon?
Lets see, Mensa was a major player, and involved with Steve Clark, and JL Plummber.. I may be young, but I was old enough to meet both Clark and JL as they served on the City Commission together in the early 90's. Ok, my guess is that Mensa is probably a member of the infamous (or not nearly famous enough in my opinion) non-group... The non-group was composed of high powered, but non-Cuban-American members of our community. Very important players were said to be part of the non-group, including the irreplaceable Alvah Chapman, Merrit Sterhiem, David Lawrence, and others(all of which I know and greatly respect). I may have been in diapers then, but I know way more than you think and what really transpired behind the cloak of revisionist history...
Lord forbid anyone speak poorly of "the good old days" and what upstanding people the politicians were back then.
If I recall correctly, Steve was known to frequent various bars as early as 8 am. He'd walk in empty handed and leave with a lumpy brown paper bag. (Lunch? I think not)
Ah...the god old days.
No I said THAT I WENT BACK TO THE PLUMMER DAYS...NOT MENSA. MENSA IS BACK FURTHER. READ MY POST AGAIN!!
If Mensa is back further than Steve Clark, we must be talking to one of the members of the Ohio contingent that really were the Pioneers of Miamiah! Flagler, Brickell, Tutle, all had Ohio ties. Amazing to think of, but, you know those ugly turkey vultures that swarm around downtown and other areas during the winter. Well, they have tracked their migration pattern, and can you guess where they migrate to and from every year without fail (and this is absolutely amazing to me), you guessed it, Miami and Ohio. In fact, in Ohio, they have a turkey vulture sighting tradition, when they actually look up and track the first bird to come back north for the summer.
Just another reason why I love this place. Honestly, there is so much negativity, I know we have problems, but, Miami sure is a great place. Clearly we have to work on making it even better, and people have different ideas of what better means, but, at the end of the day, I am happy to live in what is truly a very young Metropolitan area that has so much potential...
Before we get too excited about Lourdes Aguirre for her affiliation with "hold the line" it might be prudent to ask her "what's my line?" Her financial report says she earned $2.5 million last year from her real estate development business. Does anyone know her?
EYE ON MIAMI: THIS IS HOW YOU GET THESE INCUMBENTS OUT OF OFFICE THIS AUG 26 . . .
YOU WRITE A BLOG OR ARTICLE CALLING FOR ALL THE NEW CANDIDATES TO HOLD A MEETING IN PERSON. AT THIS MEETING THEY CAN ALL HELP EACHOTHER WITH EACHOTHERS RESOURCES. THEY EACH CAN OFFER MUCH MORE THAN JUST SUPPORT TO THE NEXT CANDIDATE.
A COALITION WILL BE FORMED AND THEN THE MIAMI HERALD WILL FOLLOW.
THIS "TEAM" WILL BE MUCH MORE SUCCESFUL AS A TEAM THAN A SINGLE NEW CANDIDATE.
DO THIS AND INCUMBENTS WILL FALL.
FIND OUT WHICH OF THE CANDIDATES ARE WILLING...
JUSTICE
Sounds like Seijas supporters are already starting the smear of Lourdes. Sure she has family money, as do other commissioners, but she spends a lot on social work in Hialeah and Miami Lakes. No one gave documentation to back-up their smears. Her name is common; is a google search valid?
I have removed several comments on LOURDES AGUIRRE as they were attacks without substance.
I don't know Lourdes Aguirre, but Bravo to Genius for removing comments consisting of attacks without substance. This is the bane of the otherwise wonderful universe of the internet.
Good for Genius to remove disparaging comments without substance. I don't think the photo you have is the Lourdes Aguirre who is running for County Commission District 13. I found Lourdes Aguirre's website and she has a very different photo of her and her family on her page. Check it out and if you can, replace the photo - www.votelourdesaguirre.com.
I replaced the photo...thanks...attractive woman!
