When a Good Man Encounters a Bully. By Geniusofdespair

Tim Schmand worked for the City of Miami for over 25 years at Bayfront Park as a grant writer then as Director. The pressure was to keep the park solvent with no funds coming from the city coffers, and amazingly, he did. Before he came, it never was solvent. Have you seen it lately. WOW! The events held in the park paid for all the work he did to fix up Bayfront Park and maintain Museum Park. Ultra went off without a hitch this year. To make up for a shortfall he scheduled a hip hop event in May. Tim has been booking events for years without approval of the Trust. Commissioner Frank Carollo reiterated several times the event had to be approved. First time Carollo brought this up was for the hip hop event, saying "All events have to be approved by the Trust!" That was never the case. The Trust trusted Tim.

You know -- a good man will talk to you in a civil manner but he will not be bullied.  Tim quit after a private meeting with Carollo. Could have been nasty for Tim to quit.

Tim Schmand, my friend, an honest, good man, quit. Carollo said that all events booked have to be approved by the Bayfront Park Trust. That never happened in the past. Maybe because they were not hip hop events (i.e. Black Events).

Here is one of Tim's Poems - he is a writer. He is reading it in the park and you can see some of the wonderful additions he has made, the oak tree promenade, a beach, with chairs. This is man filled with good humor and love. I think the City should have worked with him instead of going to extremes. I can't help feeling this whole situation was fueled because Hip Hop will attract Black people. The police were angry over the event.

Tim will be missed. His energy to improve both Bayfront Park and Museum Park had more visitors enjoying beach areas overlooking Biscayne Bay, free events, and a wide variety of paid events to fund improvements and upkeep at both parks. His legacy as an administrator is unmatched. His shoes will be hard to fill.

I worked with Tim since the 1990s. He has always been fair, generous with his time, caring and a good steward. I wish him well in his future. I hope Bayfront Park can do as well without him.

No one realizes these promoters are cut throat and will stiff you ANYONE they can. Tim was a Fox when it came to handling promoters. That will be hard to replace.

I love your poem. I will have to be more careful about the way I leave the house.

So, the clownery with Carollo name is back at City hall.
Never knew Tim, but he sounds like a great man, we are losing to many like him in public service.

City of Miami and Miami Beach don't have an objective noise ordinance. The police make massive overtime on these events. You very rarely see the upper levels of police protesting against these events.
Putting pressure on one man is not going to change the overall problems from operating an open air venue. Allowing residential condominiums next to an arena and open air venue is a zoning disaster.

Tim Schmand deserves better than the back of the hand from Carollo.

It used to be that bullies would eventually get their asses kicked once they bullied one person too many. Now they seem to get elected, and even re-elected, to public office.

Thanks for your service, Tim. The park is so much more appealing and accessible than it was in the 80's. You've truly made your mark on our city.

Thank you very much for all of you have done for our city and park, Tim. You have always been accessible to residents and very aware of noise issues for neighbors. You will be sorely missed. I was actually stunned to read you had resigned for scheduling an event - and it takes a lot for me to be stunned by news these days.

Best regards in all your future endeavors - maybe, maybe you can be persuaded by some other Commissioners to come back to us and manage our park???!! Would be great.

What is with politicians who try to get people fired or quit? It seems more prevalent in South Florida than other places. When will legislative agents learn they should stay out of the executive/administration? They are not skilled administrators. Many of them can not even tie their own shoes? I pick this Tim guy over some fool who doesn't even endorse his brother? What is up with that? I thought we were all about family values in this town?

I wish we had a system that rewarded hard workers like Tim who do not succumb to ego-maniac legislative puppets who are sociopaths with no regards for those who work to keep our government functional and running.... Let us know how karma unfolds...
