How many neighborhoods around stadiums get gentrified? A stadium is not the typical foundation for a warm and family-friendly neighborhood. Gotta love those rowdy fans of the winning / losing team turning over my car and setting it on fire!
I just wish county and city officials would be realistic and responsible in the planning and consider not just the footprint of the stadium but the whole surrounding neighborhood. In LittlecHabama there was no benefit to the physical spaces. Surrounding the Marlins stadium - not even new sidewalks, Street trees, urban parks, lighting. It's just the same neglected and impoverished and crumbling infrastructure, despite the hundreds of millions lavished inside into Loria's baseball palace. All public funds and public lands. The economic disparity is staggering in Miami and its physical manifestation is everywhere. How can Miami sustain millionaire condos right next to derelict tenements? It's depressing.
The stealing of CRA monies that are supposed to help impoverished, neglected communities improve is being used for lavish museums and stadiums is criminal. CRA - community revitilization funds - have also been used to pay for the port tunnel (the port was declared a blighted area) and the county wants to now declare a Pinelands forest a blighted area so they can create a CRA and then help private developers build a theme park. Is our government a criminal enterprise? l. Who will be indicted?
LOL show me one city where this PR standard has actually proved true. No where in the US anyway. Yet the owner and leagues keep shoveling it while spreading around the campaign dollars and PRESTO the public has another white elephant..
In this case it's lipstick on a pig.. David Beckham can't afford a parking lot and there's no way we're getting in bed with another 3P Marlin's style parking garage.. so they just claim "forward thinking urban planning" I can almost see the ;-) on the press release..
Let's be clear. This is going to get public resources... free land, tax shelters, utility easements, infrastructure even police for traffic control during events, there are a million ways politicians quietly funnel public resources for these deals in such a way they can stand up at election time and claim "no public taxes were used in the building of this stadium".... ;-)
Hell, under this administration's tortured logic the County bed tax money is not considered public money
When you sit in at City of Miami Commission meetings, where renovations and new buildings are approved, with less then half the required parking, the patent answer is always: Heck, nowadays people com on foot and with public transportation! Right on.
They think they can get away with it because they did, on parking, at the Heat Arena, at the PAC, at the Perez Museum and the Frost Museum. BTW, thank your Publican leaders for doing away with any kind of traffic concurrency "to make infill easier". LOLZ.
No parking on site can work IF games are played after 6 PM when most business parking lots within a mile or two are empty and IF there is real coordination of buses to shuttle people to the stadium and return to the lots. Maybe Beckham will be in the shuttle bus business.......It is done in Sydney......
