Here is the fact: You can't win.
The Demographics are totally against you. Also the money is against you. All the money that Gimenez has raised in his campaign account and PAC, you can't catch up. The County is about 60% Hispanic. You don't have a chance in hell and you will have to resign to run. Actually in a lot of ways you are more powerful than the mayor. You hold the purse strings. So don't give up a bird in the hand, the Chairmanship, for big promises from the Democrats that they sometimes don't deliver on, well most times. You will be saying to yourself "Where are they, they promised to help." You would be their sacrificial lamb. If anyone should run it should be Dennis Moss or that awful Barbara Jordan. They are almost termed out.
Be the chair and be happy doing it. It is an honor. If you hate doing it...well then run. You will have a nice long vacation when the election is over.

The Dade Democrats continually support the wrong people in the wrong races. They should be supporting current candidates and those who have chances in the house races and local elections.
Monestine will never win; his voting record is horrendous as both the Chair and Commissioner when it comes to Democratic issues. All one would have to do is play the tape of him not giving the public to speak for more than a minute at a public hearing. That alone will hurt him, tremendously.
I agree the sacrificial lamb should be Barbara Jordan.
Last anon, much better idea! She needs to be termed out! Jordan, "a covenant is binding until we unbind it" my words, has a worse record than Monestine on the UDB.
Actually if Raquel Regalado and Gimenez split the right wing hispanic vote in the runoff, Monestine can tackle Gimenez in the November election with a coalition of dems, blacks, and sensible people who recognize Ginenez for what he is: Little Rick Scott- horrible on the environment (PortMiami Deep Dredge, Boat Show, Airshow in the Everglades) and willing to sell off all public assets through his 3P programs, wanted to defund public libraries, hiring incompetents and cronies, etc...). Does he even believe in Climate Change? The list goes on. We can do better! Will Monestine save us?
He will run. Ego meets reality.
I like Monestime but I will vote for Raquel.
He is running for an ambassadorial position in President Clinton's administration. He is one of her GOTV operatives in South Florida. He has told me directly he'd love to be an ambassador to a small laid back tranquil island like Bahamas. He will be in her limo everytime she's visiting the black community is SFlA. When she wins and he looses he hopes to be rewarded for resigning his powerful chairmanship to take one for the team.
Only trouble is, if Hillary loses, he has nothing. Ask Kendrick Meek how the Clintons worked out for him.
I will not vote for Monestime. His cute smile will not win me over.

Nobody can beat Gimenez. It's all about the money. He will buy the Spanish radio commentators and the Herald Editorial Board. He will also pay all the absentee ballot scammers - just like last time, when he and Kathy Rundle paid for those nursing home bandits to collect ballots. He will take full page ads in the Herald and the El Nuevo Herald, so the reporters won't be able to write anything bad about him or his demented children. All the county contractors will have to double down if Monestime threatens Gimenez - contributing more to Gimenez and not one penny to Monestime. The pay-to-play corruption under Gimenez is out of control, but no one cares. Since it is only about money, we should just skip the expense of an election and let the asshole with the biggest purse have the office.
He might forced a run off -- between the two Republican front runners by bringing Dena to the poll and rising the threshold for 50 + 1 percent. Joe Celestine was reaching out to GOP operatives; he thought the Governor was going to appoint a replacement if Monestime resign to run. Celestine is a Republican and former mayor of North Miami.
I remember when Gimenez was asked on the Spanish radio if he prayed before he makes big decisions. He told the woman caller that he did not. He said he goes to church on Sunday, but he makes his decisions on his own. The arrogance of Gimenez should defeat him. He has destroyed so many people with his stupid choices. There will probably be a special room in hell waiting for him. It is not a weakness to pray about big decisions. Real leaders think carefully about the impact of their decisions. Gimenez is no leader. The voters should never vote for Gimenez ever again.
If Suarez or Monestime decide to run, their seats only become vacant after a Mayor is elected.
The “resign-to-run law” essentially prohibits an elected or appointed “officer” from QUALIFYING as a candidate for another state, district, county or municipal public office if the terms or any part of the terms overlap with each other if the person did not resign from the office the person presently holds. (Section 99.012(3), Florida Statutes.)
To the lawyer above...that is why a resignation letter has to be submitted prior to qualifying that states the resignation will be effective on the date of the election.
Monestime can take on Gimenez and win. There is a big contrast to be made between our status quo of privatize everything, shut down libraries, developer handouts, and what's sea level rise? life-long bureaucrat with 2 pensions... and a self-made small businessman who defeated an incumbent commissioner and has led on issues of inequality through the prosperity council. There is a very clear path. The person who can't win is Raquel. She would be much better than Gimenez, but that's a low bar. I don't trust that Braman money.....
Regarding the comment above about Gimenez not praying before big decisions.
If anything, that is a BIG plus in my book. He could have chosen the easy path and pandered to the religious wingnuts that listen to SP radio, but chose to be honest. I like that.
Besides, I'd prefer to have someone in office that gets guidance from people and their own rational thoughts and research than from a voice in their head that ordains their thoughts as coming from on high.
I've had enough of jackass "leaders" who hear the voice of god all the time and therefore know better than the voters that elected them or the weight of evidence before them.
Ayn Randino, can you name one person that advises Gimenez? I didn't think so. He listens to no one.
God isn't involved in politics and a self serving , hypocrite politician REGARDLESS of party praying isn't gone to amount to a hill of beans .
It is a big con game for the ignorant Bible thumpers on both sides of the isles .
How has prayer worked out as far as removing the Castro's or any of the other vermin politicos in any Latin American country be it on the left or on the right ?
God in politics is a big scam but the gullible still swallow it up.
I do give Miami Cubans credit because of all the Hispanic groups this con doesn't work on them like it does on NY Puerto Ricans with their self serving Bible thumping politicos who do NOTHING for them and the politically apathetic South/Central Americans all over the states eat the ''God'' thing up .
Perhaps God will vote on their behalf .
However the Miami Cuban political con game after 50 years is sadly still the ''Cuba libre'' cry .
Jose
''Monestime can take on Gimenez and win''
Lol that was funny .
Unlike every Non Cuban Hispanic group in Miami and ''Black'' groups . Cubans actually vote and by voting I don't mean once every 4 years .
I also mean local and state elections which is a concept that only Cubans grasp .
Yes there are exceptions but they are just that .
The only person who can beat Gimenez would have to be another Cuban .
Heck if I was running for Mayor in Miami and I had a choice 1,000 Cubans who supported me vs 10,000 non Cuban Hispanics and another 10,000 ''Blacks'' combined .
I'll take the 1,000 Cubans and win BIG.

''Nobody can beat Gimenez. It's all about the money. He will buy the Spanish radio commentators and the Herald Editorial Board. He will also pay all the absentee ballot scammers - just like last time, when he and Kathy Rundle''
I do not disagree with you and I find Rundle to be pura MAFIA whose main purpose is to enable Cuban political and police corruption .
She is a disgrace who wears on her sleeve that she is the daughter of exiles . ONLY here could this disaster continue to hold office .
Having said that Gimenez supporters actually vote and no one has to hold their hand which is a concept that the rest of the non Cuban assorted Hispanic and ''Black'' Miami tribes cant grasp .
I do not say this because I am Cuban but because it is a fact and all of you know it .
Don't blame those who vote , blame those who don't .
Gimenez can only be beat by another Cuban .
Jose
I notice some of you debating about Rep vs Dem which is hilarious in Miami .
There are no Reps or Dems here just organized crime syndicates who use a letter to win over the blind base and get party money .
Don't get caught up in that party nonsense in Miami. The most you can hope for is a quasi honest politico who gets things done .
Gimenez raised property tax and GAVE his friend 9 million dollars of OUR money for her private tower . Like we are supposed to over look that .
EVERY commissioner but one took 4 to 5 million dollars for themselves under the lie of creating jobs . Granted zero accountability DA 'up for sale' Rundle will never look at where the money goes .
IMO they must ALL go not just Gimenez.
Gimenez considering the long line of filth before him isn't bad . They were all parasites but raising property tax with nothing to show for it and hiring more police where countless needed to be fired for hanging out most of their shifts and not patrolling is unacceptable .
Than again this a city which think Commissioner Jose 'Pepe' Diaz is acceptable .
Jose
Monestime had a mean ugly fight with fellow commissioner Audrey Edmonson. It was ugly and citizens were catcalling him to ease up.
