How Stupid are our Voters? Very Stupid. By Geniusofdespair

According to the Bendixen & Amandi International Poll.....that the Miami Herald won't confirm or deny they paid for:

Question: Which of the following do you think is the most important issue facing Miami-Dade County  (and the people answering are voters, that is the scary part)?

Gimleteye, a very smart man, spends most of his time writing about climate change and sea level rise and as you can see the electorate does not give a shit about it, rating it at 2%. We are in a drought and our drinking water supply is seriously facing salt water intrusion. No worries, as long as you don't have traffic congestion. The people complain about traffic congestion but then only come up with 2% on development as a problem. Where do they think the traffic is coming from? They complain about Government Corruption but then elect the same stupid politicians over and over.

78% of Miami Dade County support the soccer stadium near the Orange Bowl. and a whopping 67% favor that ridiculous Wet Dream Mall. Like we need another mall. What are these people thinking? Don't they ever go swimming, or to a park? They want jobs for more money to spend at a mall?

Readers, if you don't like Carlos Gimenez or Raquel Regalado for Miami Dade County Mayor....Who do you think should run for Mayor of Miami Dade County? Give us some suggestions.....

By the way pollsters: do you have cell phone numbers or are you relying on home phones? I am told they do in fact have cell phone numbers too and a fleet of  UAV's hovering over your houses watching what you eat. Didn't you ever get one of those mysterious phone calls about your sugar intake or Cholesterol level? Yep, it was the pollster drones that ratted you out.

There are plenty of well qualified professionals who could lead our county as mayor and do a much better job than Gimenez has done. Sadly, monies from special interests prevent those people from stepping forward and running for office. Our biggest problem lies with the voters who care very little about our democratic system and routinely fail to cast votes in our local elections. A 17% voter turnout will not rid us of Gomenez. The assumption is made based on his large campaign chest and his well oiled machine that relies on absentee ballots to win elections. The local media shares a large part of the blame as well. The Miami Herald and El Nuevo Herald treat Gimenez with kid gloves and fail to conduct in-depth investigations into his association with lobbyists and contractors and the issuance of county county contracts to his close allies and campaign contributors. We are now seeing the "benevolent" Gimenez. If he is reelected in 2016 we will once again see a return to the draconian measures that have made him quite unpopular.

How about Philip Levine? He his own money. He could force Gimenez into a November runoff where he will lose. Only Republicans will be voting in August because Clinton has a lock on the nomination.

The problem is not the voters, its the non-voters. At least the voters care enough to vote. The non-voters all have better things to do with their times. I'm a voter and this poll doesn't represent me!!!

What would represent you? What issues?

Katy Sorenson! It's time for a woman to put the house in order.

Geniusofdespair said...

I doubt a non Hispanic woman has any chance countywide. Enough Katy's.

The issues have to be explained in a simplistic, how it affects me, visceral way. Otherwise, it's too easy for the non-voter to be diverted by daily chores and the 10 million other entertaining options, to pay attention.

I fear you're right, regardless of qualifications with a 65% Hispanic and 75% speaking language other that english at home demographic, we saw the last of the english only gringo mayors with Steve Clark..
Plus
Katy is too white and too progressive for county wide and she knows it. But she is fine where she is, recruiting and grooming progressive candidates like Daniella..

However I think in Daniella's case, eventually you'll see the student become the master. I fully expect more of her in the years to come.

This cycle may be predictable but come 2020 and term limits kicking in it will be a free-for-all.

Hey at least climate change sea level rise made the list at all. A few years ago the Herald wasn't covering the issue and no one was asked. Come the first Superstorm with devastating flooding and destruction and the issue will be Número uno. You can't care about the drought until your cafe con leche goes salty.

Much like the state legislature county government has been controlled by lobbyists. This is especially true of this current Mayor and his band of Lobbyists feeding at the public trough.

Lobbyists should be prohibited from the 29th floor unless the have a scheduled meeting which is posted and open to the public. The Public's business should be in public. Same requirements should be for county commissioners as well.
Most of the key issues before Mayor and commission have a slew of lobbyists attached. They influence the public decision Making process much more than any concerns by the public. Let the sunshine in and establish stringent requirements on the hidden government (are you listening Daniella ?) ruled by The lobbyists. Sir Gimenez has been influenced by his close "friends of Carlos" .. The lobbyists .. More than any other Mayor including Alex Penelas!

Term limits can be effective on county level or we will have current group forever. On state level however it has produced a race for leadership positions as soon as person is elected. Deals are made .. Lobbyists pick their puppets and fund their aspirations early in the first term. There is no institutional memory other than what the lobbyists and bureaucrats bring to the table.

If Gimenez is to be defeated he must be forced into a run off in the November general election. Katy Sorenson.. Phil Levine .. Manny Diaz .. Or Xavier Suarez ...Jimmy Morales..all need to seriously consider running or we'll have his excellency and his merry cadre of lobbyists for another four years.

I think that Raquel can lead and she is my choice for mayor. One poll does not make or break a candidate.

Charles Dusseau was a voice of reason - - will put my thinking cap on for more. Meanwhile, I would leave Raquel in the mix.

Mount Olympus I hope you amused yourself. It didn't amuse me. I grew up poor don't tell me I am out of touch.

I think Raquel Regalado will run a great race for mayor in 2016 and will be a very good mayor. Katy Sorenson would be a great mayor, but she would have trouble getting elected in our county. Most of the voters vote for a candidate of their own ethnicity, so the vast majority of non-Hispanics wouldn't be able to win. Daniella Levine Cava might be the one exception, because she does speak Spanish and I'm pretty sure she actually lived in South America for a while a long time ago. Of course, Daniella would have to wait to run for mayor, because she will only have been a commissioner for 2 years by the 2016 election. Isn't she terrific? I'm a RETIRED county employee, so I can use my real name to post my comment!

You wanted to know what my number one concern is? Non-voters. I can't believe that people pay so much in taxes and don't bother to educate themselves on the issues. We have a candidate in Dist. 2 Miami that hasn't voted in the last 13 municipal elections and now he wants us, the voters, to elect him to this position. My neighbors that support him want him in because his occupation is "business". Can someone please explain to me the disconnect here? He doesn't vote in local elections, but he's ready to help run the city????? Maybe you're right. Maybe voters are stupid.

I find it hard to believe that "Jobs" (aka: profits for corporations, but "shhh") figure so prominently while the environment is so far down in the list.

Philip Levine would probably do an excellent job. But he is not Cuban.
