Boating Etiquette: Music On A Boat. by Geniusofdespair

Fourth of July is coming and I dread going out on a boat to listen to OTHER PEOPLE'S MUSIC. Party and drink all you want, just stop with the loud music.

You might be playing music I like from the 500 watt mega-speakers you have installed on the front of your boat. I just don't want to hear it. Whether you play hip hop, salsa, country western or rock, it doesn't matter. People in general don't want to hear other people's choice in music, they want to hear their own.

Let me be in peace on my boat or let me listen to my own music. Your sound should end at your boat. Get the friggin' speakers off the front of your boat and be a human being and respect your neighbors on the water. Here is an even better idea. If you want to play loud music, isolate yourself from others and anchor. Better idea, don't play music at all, go out to enjoy the water and give your ears a much needed rest.

Really? Your stupid little boat needs these??

As a Cuban American I am ashamed to say that the propensity to play loud music is almost innate in the genes of most Hispanics. Get off on that sandbar and I guarantee you 95% of those in the picture are Cuban Americans. It is not just on sand bars, far away from the ears of their neighbors. It is even worse in affluent residential areas where at times you can feel every bass beat played by some inconsiderate soul from two blocks away. How many times can you play Pitbull's "Te gusta la gasolina" before your brain cells begin to deteriorate? In fact what sort of person would allow anyone to call him "Pitbull" anyway? Geez!
Don't even bother calling the police to force these residential fiestas to be toned down during the day or early evening hours. The police will only cite the violators if they are playing loud music after 11:00 p.m. and before 7:00 a.m. Most times after the police responds and leaves the music is up again and you spend the night playing the cat and mouse game.
This devil may care behavior is disrespectful and offensive to most people around us. I know my criticism will get some hot under the collar but that does not bother me. We came down from the trees long ago now act like it. You are making us all look bad.

I have given up on sandbars.

Many years ago, I invested in a mega sound system. My cure for all of the noise is Metallica, which I can blast louder than they can! It's amazing how quickly they will turn it down if I agree to turn it down! LOL

I love going out to Matheson in the early morning for peace and meditation. I can't believe when people blast the music as they exit the harbor. Self-centered is right.

We are an exceptional nation with our boom boxes, just ask Marco Rubio.

To "Anonymous Cuban" I doubt you are what you say you are, but that's not the point. All kinds of people blast all kinds of crappy music (a matter of taste). To attribute all loud crappy music to solely one subset of an ethnic group (95%) is beyond ignorant (or self-loathing). I for one am American of Cuban descent and hate loud music including Pit Bull and Metallica. Prefer Jimmy Buffet at a moderate level.
FYI my parents didn't sit around blasting Celia Cruz, drinking mojitos, wearing guayaberas and fruit on their head or playing dominoes all day either, sheeez......talk about stereotyping.

If you go to Broward the music is under better control.

I too I'm an American of Cuban descent and could not agree anymore with the second comment. To "Cheo from Little Havana", it is not being stereotypical when one points out the faults of one own's ethnic group. If you want to come here and bury your head in the sand and say that the majority of those photographed in the above photo are not Cuban Americans go ahead but you, I and even the pink elephant in the room knows they are and the reality of the loud music problem. I am not sure what type loud music you hear at all hours of the night in Little Havana but around me, at all hours of the night and specially on weekends, it is nothing but Spanish music at a tone that would put AC/DC to shame. Having lived in South Florida since the early 60s, I don't remember any of my Anglo neighbors pumping the volume in such a manner. To deny that our ethnic group as a whole (and there are always exceptions) has a knack for disrespecting the privacy of those around us with their loud music is just an act of denial.

Since I came here in 1992, I have experienced that most of the music is in Spanish on the sandbars, islands, beaches and causeways. That is not to say hip hop doesn't exist on loud speakers. But I have found the loud music is in Spanish most of the time.

If you attribute 95% of anything without citing statistical data you are stereotyping. I have heard crappy music in English and Spanish out there. truly haven't heard any crappy creole music out there, wonder what dumb stereotype we can attribute that too.

Genius maybe you think you've heard more Spanish because it sticks out to you more since you don't speak it, or maybe you actually have heard more Spanish and that might have something to do with Hispanics being a majority in South Fl., to us bilingual folks it all sounds the same. Regardless yes everyone should keep their crappy music to themselves, of course there's always headphones or ear plugs.

There are also submarines.

I could not agree more about loud music on your boat...don't care what island you are from. Went to Elliot Key one day with family during the week and anchored off the island. My daughter and family were here so wanted to show them beautiful waters, peaceful surroundings and just swim and relax. Not another boat in sight. Soon, here comes a boat full of people. Seems like they wanted the same cove we were anchored in. They came right up next to us, passed by and dropped anchor and proceeded to crank up the music about 100 feet away! What's up with that kind of behavior? Were is the respect for other's space? How rude and inconsiderate. Seems like the whole county is full of this type of behavior on the streets, neighborhoods and waters. We may be doomed to suffer this behavior forever! My parents would have never accepted or taught this type of behavior. Let's all learn to practice good manners for a change.

Who is talking about 95%??? Cheo you are grasping at straws with your arguments. I know what I am listening to, I am not an idiot. I would say that the population of 60% is pretty accurate.

"Get off on that sandbar and I guarantee you 95% of those in the picture are Cuban Americans." This came from third Anon post (aka the Cuban American), I may be loco but I'm not blind.

OK Cubans are for the most part loud.....you happy? That still doesn't solve your boating issue -though the submarine alternative sounds pretty good-you can always look for a place with less of those loud Cubans around its a big country and even bigger planet. Trust me even I've considered it myself. But if your Cuban peace and quiet can also become unbearable.

So admit it genius somewhere deep in your inner sanctum you would miss Pit Bull blaring out of some megawattage speakers in the middle of nowhere. At least it gives you something to complain about. Damn Cubans!

Read my post again. I didn't mention Cubans. Either you guys are paranoid or so guilty you fight a fight that was never there. Cuban guilt for commandeering the boom box with your crappy taste in music. I don't even know what Cuban music sounds like. Are you so egocentric you think all Hispanics are Cubans? And to me Country Music is the worst of all music, but I never heard it blasted.

After a long day on Saturday where a cuban family put put their loudspeaker in front of them and pointed it at my boat and turned it all the way up until the speaker was distorting because we were blocking there fishing spot (there were 100 boats on the isand), I've had enough. I just ordered a 50watt megaphone with auxillary in and I'm going to mount it to point directly at them next time. Thanks for the Metallica tip, I was trying to figure out the best music and I could actually listen to that:) It says 1200 yards, I wonder how it will sound from 12 yards:)

I think the government already did research on the best song. "Teeny Weenie Polka Dot Bikini". They played that on loud speakers to topple a dictator.
