Toxic Soil Found at Bayfront Park. By Geniusofdespair

In the 80's they decided that Bayfront Park was too flat and added fill to make it a bit more interesting.  DERM has now found that the fill added is toxic and must be removed or capped. DERM decided to test all City parks after they found toxic material in other parks.

The areas in question in Bayfront Park might be closed off to the public if the cleanup is not swiftly completed. The City, although they paid for the cleanup at other parks, will not pay for the cleanup at Bayfront, they want them to pay for their own cleanup. All those Ultra people, I hope they didn't eat the dirt.

(Thanks to Carlos Gimenez, The County Department is not called DERM anymore but I can't recall nor do I care to use their new name).

Where did the fill come from? And who approved it? The City and County allowed all the Port Dredge and tunnel material to be dumped on Virginia Key and say its clean fill that will be used as fill throughout the city. I hope one day we don't find out it's also toxic.

The city has NOT cleaned up all the toxic parks. Douglas and Curtiss Parks playgrounds remain closed. Only the wealthy residents park -Merri Christmas park that straddles the gables and grove was cleaned up at a cost of $1 million.

This is the crap left over from city and county commission meetings. They had to dump it somewhere.

EVERYTHING IS TOXIC IN MIAMI DADE POLITICS.

Much of that park is toxic. City should have a Live Nation concert to raise money to clean it up.

This is no surprise as the Bayfront Park Trust has known about this for awhile and are attempting to remediate it. The problem is that the City of Miami owns the park and is ultimately liable for this, but so far has refused to contribute a dime to this effort. My understanding is that the Trust, in order to be responsible, is using its operating budget to fund the remidiation. Commissioner Sarnoff is the City Commissioner for the area and the Trust is chaired by Commissioner Carollo. Hmmmm.

As I see it,if no favored contractor wants the job, then the money is not there. If someone needs to be funded, then the city/county/state will find the money if it works for political gain.

I bet if someone did a little research it would turn out that someone's campaign contributor is getting all the contracts?
