Sea level rise in Miami: Dr. Harold Wanless on podcast, "This Can't Be Happening" … by gimleteye

Harold Wanless, a leading climatologist and geologist based at the University of Miami, returns to the “This Can’t Be Happening!” program after a year to revisit his claim that global warming and sea level rise are going to be much more dramatic than the consensus predictions of the UN Climate Committee, NASA, the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration and other groups. With recent reports of faster melting on Greenland and in both the Eastern and Western Antarctic, Wanless tells host Dave Lindorff we are now facing a catastrophe that could see sea levels rising by more than 20 feet by the end of the century, and perhaps, if methane begins seriously erupting from the Arctic seafloor, even reduced oxygen levels that could threaten mammals, including humans.

Listen to the webcast here. Eye On Miami dares you to listen.

I know you don't like links elsewhere, but this is an important one:

VICE news traveled to Antarctica to visit with science teams alarmed by the rate of collapse of the western sheet, especially the Pine Island glacier:

The person waiting for the polar ice melt date...don't worry. It's not really going to affect you and your air conditioned, hand on the tv remote and the other on a beer lifestyle.

It's just going to fuck with your grandchildren.

"Sea ice is melting rapidly, especially in the Arctic. Scientists at the University of Leeds have determined that global warming contributes to the loss of a tremendous amount of sea ice -- enough to equal 1.5 million icebergs the size of the Titanic every year. Melting icebergs and melting ice caps are causing sea levels to rise, in some areas significantly. Rising sea levels are expected to cause flooding and erosion in low-lying, coastal cities.

Why Archimedes Won't Help
Polar ice caps, or ice sheets formed over land, were once thought to be the only melting ice that could actually increase sea levels. Archimedes' principle states that any object floating in liquid is displacing its own weight of that liquid, so when floating ice melts, it changes form but does not change the amount of water in the ocean. The water contained in icebergs, however, is colder and less salty than seawater, so the two do not completely mix; the differences in density cause sea levels to rise slightly."

What part of "no trolls" do you not understand.

Dr. Wanless's predictions on climate and sea level keep turning out to be right, unfortunately. Listen to the podcast, and start making preparations for your financial future. Now. You do it for hurricanes. This is much bigger.
On the science, speaking as a physiologist, I expect increased CO2 will prove much more of a problem for us animals than reduced atmospheric oxygen.

It will be sad if Dr. Wanless is right. I did listen to most of the broadcast and i believe he is.

I think this is the last blog that still tries to claim there is man-made global warming. Time to find a new doomsday cult.

doesnt this professor get federal grants? if so, he has no credibility with me. the federal government only pays for research that reinforces obama's position. if a professor doesnt support computer models that show global warming in the future, the feds cut off the grant money spigot.

Dr. Victor Fries will get federal grants to study this issue.

Since 1990, CO2 emissions from international aviation have increased 83 per cent. Anybody care to ask the Miami Beach mayor how he will cut tourism so people don't fly as much? I'm dead serious.
