Art Basel Miami Beach: The Traffic! … by gimleteye

The good news: the disaster of Miami Beach's Alton Road has been mostly cleaned up by the City of Miami Beach -- at least until the end of Art Basel.

The bad news: good luck trying to move by car anywhere else. Yesterday afternoon! it took an hour and fifteen minutes from US 1 and LeJeune Rd. in Coral Gables to get to the Miami Beach Convention Center. The previous evening, for the opening of Art Miami, we detoured through every side street we could find from US 1 to Midtown and it still took over an hour.

I've been to every Art Basel since its inception. I keep thinking the traffic can't get worse. (Read the Miami Herald, and we are all "happy"! My recommendation to Miami-based readers: wait until late Sunday afternoon to go to the fair.)

This week, the Perez Art Museum is free to Miami-Dade residents. Happy! How many citizens will be taking advantage of free admission and driving by car? Now, the other museum is completely blocking the Perez, so who will know where anything is? Where's the garage? Where's the parking?

Here are two google traffic maps, taken at 8PM last night. No explanation necessary.
