$10,500,000 For Badia and $65,000,000 No Bid Contract for Odebrecht. By Geniusofdespair

This Badia Spices project will generate 20 or 30 new jobs I think the Herald said.  I was told the Badia Spices deal is just a pass through.  Is it costing us any money? How is it benefiting us? Why are we involved in Badia's expansion? I don't get it. They are  a successful company.

Odebrecht's no bid contract at the airport is also being heard. Wasn't that about $65,000,000?? Are we crazy here? They are slipping all these bad things -- spending our money -- at holiday time when you are distracted. Good company, Badia, but why are we financing them?? Let's finance Eye on Miami. We need a Ma and Pa grant.

RESOLUTION APPROVING THE ISSUANCE OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY TAXABLE INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT REVENUE BONDS (BADIA SPICES PROJECT), IN AN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED $10,500,000.00 TO FINANCE A CAPITAL PROJECT FOR THE BENEFIT OF BADIA SPICES, INC.
WHEREAS, Badia Spices, Inc., a Florida corporation (the "Company"), has requested the Miami-Dade County Industrial Development Authority (the "Authority") issue not exceeding $10,500,000.00 of its Taxable Industrial Development Revenue Bonds (Badia Spices Project) (the "Bonds"), the proceeds of which will be used (together with funds of the Company) to (i) finance or refinance the acquisition of approximately 5.63 acres of land with an approximately 101,000 square foot building (the "Project") to be used as a distribution facility for its retail/institutional line of spices on property located at 9880 NW 25th Street, in the City of Doral, Florida; and (ii) pay certain bond issuance costs; and

WHEREAS, the Authority intends to issue the Bonds subject to approval by the Board of County Commissioners of Miami-Dade County, Florida (the “Board”) and final approval by the Authority of the financing documents for the Project, which is more particularly described in the report prepared by the Executive Director of the Authority (a copy of which is attached hereto as Exhibit A); and

WHEREAS, after reviewing such report in respect of the Bonds and finding that the Project will inure to the benefit of the citizens of Miami-Dade County, this Board desires to approve the issuance of the Bonds,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that:

Section 1. The issuance of Taxable Industrial Development Revenue Bonds of the Authority in an aggregate principal amount not to exceed $10,500,000.00 for the purpose of financing all or a portion of the Project, as previously described, is approved.

Section 2. The Bonds and the interest on the Bonds shall not constitute a debt, liability or general obligation of the Authority, the County or of the State of Florida or of any political subdivision thereof, but shall be payable solely from the revenues or other moneys specifically provided by the Company for the payment of the Bonds and neither the faith and credit nor any taxing power of the Authority, the County or of the State of Florida or of any political subdivision thereof is pledged to the payment of the principal or interest on the Bonds.
Odebrecht is on the Agenda today too:

You wanted Gimenez and all his baggage- you got him. Tell us you could not see through his $3 million in campaign funds and PAC monies when he last ran for office. All of these special interests come along with the package. Worse than that, he is getting ready to do it again in 2016. Wonder how many of those fools who voted for him last time will once again listen to his siren song about reducing taxes and shrinking government. I bet all his corrupt friends sleep well at night while enjoying those fat county contracts.

So sad. One scheme after another.

The county guidelines are a ratio of 40,000 condominiums to 1 business expansion.

If this is change order 13 and it is for 65,000,000....I would love to know the cost of the other 12.

What am I not understanding here? If Badia is paying for the bonds and no political authority is backing up the bonds, what is the purpose of issuing the bonds? I'm real confused, here!

I suppose Badia would have to pay 8-9% for market rate loan....County will get bonds at 5-6% and who ever sells the bonds will gets commissions they can slush around on the Commissioners for a chance to do it again....
Tell me if I am wrong....

Seems like Cava voted for the MIA giveaway, how disappointing.

Why aren’t we treating Cava like Bell??? She voted in favor of a 65 million give away at MIA.

Steve,

Thanks for the reply, but how can the County float bonds at 5-6% when the bonds they are issuing are not backed by "the faith and credit nor any taxing power of the Authority, the County or of the State of Florida or of any political subdivision thereof is pledged to the payment of the principal or interest on the Bonds." That's what confuses me. Bond brokers aren't stupid - they see this and if the bonds aren't backed by some form of political authority, then a lower rate (for less risk) is not justified. Something ain't right here! Is the County selling us a bill of goods about these bonds? Are they, in fact, backed in some form by the taxpayers?

GOD - where are you?? Clarification, please!

Badia deal- here is the scoop I got on this deal ---they are going to the county to get a better interest rate now whether or not the county has to pay if they don't pay the bond loan I don't know yet. Whether or not the county has to pay fees and hourly wages I don't know yet. I don't know the county cost on the Badia deal but they are not paying $100 million. If this is a minimal cost for tax payers I'm all for it as it is a good company. But I don't know yet what liability to the county is for paperwork and if they default. I have requested more information let's see if I get it.

Daniella voted for it.

The resolution was badly written. I.e. None of us understand it.

Let's not rake Daniela over the coals for every vote, she has to get along with the other commissioners too. I think we will get many good votes from her but we will not get 100% of what we like. Be realistic.

She voted for the no-bid contract at the airport. They got her with the tired argument there is no time to bid it out. These big contracts do take a very long time to bid out and and there are challenges to it by the other company. Only Bovo voted against it on principle. I think the argument of no time will not resonate with her in the future. She isn't stupid. Everything can't be an emergency, that is not how you run the government.
