I go to the Orchids and Onions function every year. The Urban Environment League is a very quiet group, founded by architects in the 1990's, that packs a wallop on City of Miami and Miami Dade County planning -- supporting good projects and critical of the bad. Go to the meeting of this good government group. It is always a great event. They need volunteers to help: Contact uelmiami76@gmail.com. Daniella Levine Cava is the featured speaker.

The Urban Environment League has influence. This year look for billboard salesman Marc Sarnoff to receive an "onion". (Not a good thing).
I nominate Palmetto Bay Mayor Shelley Stanczyk to receive an "onion" for her stealth campaign to pull a fast one on the Palmetto Bay Village Center.
I nominate Dennis Moss an onion. Moss for thinking it is OK to put more broke fake "museums" on waterfront park land. Worse, Moss wants the taxpayers to pay for these boondoggles.
At the risk of blaspheming her good name, I nominate Donna Shalela for an onion. Selling off for development a large tract of one of the few remaining native pine rocklands is about as mercenary and unenlightened as we've seen in this town in many years.
Donna Shalala deserves an onion for pandering to Walmart and giving away a piece of the Everglades to another dumb strip center / Walmart...
I think Grant Stern should be getting an orchid for his work against Walmart in Midtown and in the rock pine preserve in Kendall.
