County Commissioner Xavier Suarez Takes A Stand on Beckham's Stadium Location Saying NO to the Waterfront. By Geniusofdespair

City of Miami Commissioner Francis Suarez with his Dad County Commission Xavier Suarez
County Commissioner Xavier Suarez took a position against the FEC Boat Slip location for the Beckham Soccer stadium. Xavier is the first County Commissioner to do so.  Let's hope Francis also agrees.  Xavier believes the Stadium should be built near the Marlin's Stadium instead of walling off our waterfront. Suarez has been an independent voice on the County Commission. If only Gimenez would follow his lead on some of it, like this stupid idea. Gimenez: STOP WITH ALL THE STADIUM MANEUVERS. You have bigger fish to fry.

Xavier Suarez is a brilliant, educated, moral man. How he can share the dais with the fools sitting there is beyond comprehension. Good for him!

Commissioner, thank you.

The view or not the view, is that the question?

As I recall, Xavier was instrumental in building and operating the $54 million 17,000 seat Miami Arena.. The Arisons built us the 20,000 seat AAA for $213 mil.

While it's claimed the Old Arena failed due to age and maintenance, the big difference was the premium seating (sky boxes) and concession (Parking, restaurants, bars) which are bread and butter for venue operators. In my experience some events, typically concerts, the operators concession revenue exceeds the net from ticket sales.

Considering Ted Arison brought the original franchise in 1988 for $32 million and it's now worth something north of $2 billion (and has never turned a profit???) I'd say Mickey knows how to sell sky boxes t-shits and popcorn.. He has certainly proved he knows how to sell politicians.

But back to the Bayside issue.. Interesting we never hear the reason the old arena failed was because of the view.

Now, who to believe?, The guy who's been there, done that and is telling us this is another bad deal or the carpetbaggers promising to bring us into the 21 century?

(Really? that's even a question? )

" The view or not the view, is that the question? "

Well, you obviously don't know the history of the two Arena's. I give you an A+ on the new spin now about the "view". Very creative.

There is plenty of land available in Downtown Miami for another stadium next to a stadium boondoggle. The investors can break out their wallet and buy whatever they want privately.

Public property is not a bargaining chip for the politicians to give away, though it seems like they think it is. Beckham et al, if they really want a "view", can pay for it on land they purchase and own by buying it and leave OUR PUBLIC LAND alone!

That is a core issue Beckham won't address. I'm tired of these stadium deals.

This couldn't be more appropriate next to the Marlin's. Too bad they didn't propose it at the same time that deal went through so the Arena next to a Ballpark would have been a 2 for 1 deal on the tax payer dole.

I'm very proud of the rational, smart responses my Commissioner has issued to the Heat stadium deal, the library issue, and the others that are being bungled by Mayor Gimenez.

The soccer stadium belongs next to the Marlins Park. If the area is ever going to transition and become a destination, having both sports venues in the neighborhood just might make it happen. To date, the surrounding areas have seen no benefit. With soccer in the neighborhood, that could all change.

As for stadium folks talking about "spiritually tainted" free public land, I am sure we can sacrifice a herd of goats and a coop full of chickens to get the FREE land in spiritual condition for Beckham.

Miami Dade County District 7

To the Editor: David Beckham and MLS (Major League Soccer) have always said they need a downtown stadium to bring a team to Miami. From the start, David Beckham’s efforts have been honest and open, and he has shown willingness to sit with each and every one of the sectors of our great community to find solutions and answer questions, rather than hiding behind newspaper ads and undefined coalitions. Recently, Mayor Gimenez provided the ownership group a second viable site. Rather than the opposition mounting a silly attack against this site, too, it’s time to find solutions to make this happen whether at the port or the FEC slip. Soccer needs to come to Miami, and either site would be amazing. Mr. Beckham is not asking for public funds. Miami deserves a great team and stadium, not more squabbling that will cause us to lose out. The moment for securing a site for the stadium is now. Thank you for your consideration. MISINFORMED IN MIAMI DADE COUNTY DISTRICT 7? XS MET with no one from the surrounding neighborhood? BIG POSSIBILITY.
March 14, 2014 Constituency Corner I’m pleased to share some positive outcomes that our office has handled for our Community and residents of District 7. This week’s update focuses on a group of residents that live in the neighborhood surrounding South Miami Park. They recently voiced a concern regarding “stadium style” lighting that had been installed in the park by FPL. Unfortunately, the lights were shining directly into their backyards, and a group of at least 15 constituents got together and reached out to us with their concerns. Through the professional assistance of the City of South Miami Parks Assistant Director and a representative from FPL, our staff was able to set up a community meeting with the residents, and came to a mutually agreeable solution. On March 12, 2014, my office received a letter from a group of very satisfied constituents thanking us for resolving the problem in a timely and efficient manner. Based on Community, City and County involvement, FPL worked with all stakeholders and successfully resolved the issues, to the satisfaction of all involved. Kudos to all of the stakeholders - here’s to continued public-private partnerships and continued community involvement! xs

Point Beckham toward Homestead's Sports Complex and give a him a big push out of Miami and away from our waterfront.

I live a couple miles from the homestead stadium. We have to pay attention to the airbase crash zones, however, at least the homestead pd would be able to deal with traffic. Although I am trapped by school zones daily ( my travel is determined little white signs) ...I wonder what soccer would do to us.

Sorry Sylvia you're wrong
I don't care what the Beckha's group wants it's what the community wants and there are no stupid excuses on the FEC slip -- you're not filling in the FEC slip it's the aquatic preserve. They are not silly excuses it also has a historical value. We do not want the soccer stadium on the waterfront ---he can be within the city and not be on the waterfront if he doesn't want to be in the city and not on the waterfront then let him go somewhere else with soccer stadium. I'm offended that you would call us all a bunch of phony groups against a soccer stadium, we are people that live in the county and have a right to express ourselves on what we want on our land and on our water. I would think given your background you would respect the aquatic preserve.

Geniusofdespair said...

I don't know what you are all posting about south miami-- stop it---it is off subject.

No silly attacks here. Yours Mrs. Caviglia is a silly support of a greased up shill Mayor for Beckham and Adelson's desire to be on the Bay. You are silly in your support.

Anonymous said...

Xavier Suarez is correct. He did his homework. We all love soccer BUT we love our FEC slip and Bicentennial Park more. No more sports stadiums ruining our waterfront parks. We hope Francis Suarez will speak up Thursday at the City Commission meeting.

Geniusofdespair said...

Thank you Commissioner Suarez.

There is too much misinformation. Beckham claims no public funding will be used for the stadium, however, the legislature will provide millions of sales tax rebates. In addition, the FEC site is probably the most expensive waterfront land in Miami, and they want it almost gifted to them.
This is the usual bad deal for the public and great deal for the carpetbaggers.

Anonymous said...

But this bad offer came from Mayor Gimenez, let's bit forget that!

Will someone please explain the latest Dolphin deal. It sounds like I will make improvements to my house, then the county will pay me to live in it.

Ross wants out of his $4 county tax bill, while originally the Mayor was all for it, outcry from Miami Gardens and the school board has him backing down.(Also the $4 mil was a hit to the general fund)
Now Ross....oh I'm sorry.. the Mayor...has come up with a way to refund his property tax bill by funneling bed tax dollars to the team under the table using a convoluted "pay for play" scheme which the Mayor will share at the last possible minute to the least number of people as it takes to his 7 votes on the BCC.

BTW Ross says he's putting $400 million of his own money into the deal. LOL, Ross using $400 million of his own money for a $200 million dollar project.....The guy didn't get to be a billionaire real estate tycoon by making "fair" real estate deals, he makes profitable deals.. Love to see those books...

Anonymous said...

The books on the redevelopment plan of the stadium is in the public record already, and it is clearly going to cost well over $200 million.

As to Suarez, this is the same guy that wanted to use helicopters with huge magnets attached to take out broken down cars from US-1. When this blog cites this man as a voice of reason, then you know there is something critically wrong with this blog.

Anonymous said...

To the Anon Ross fan above, Yes I know what he SAYS it's going to cost, it's what it actually cost that counts..

In construction there are the actual sub-contrator cost, the 10 and 10 CG mark up cost and the owner's whatever-we-can-get-away-with retail price for the books cost.

Which number do you think Ross is quoting?

AS for X, yes some say he's crazy. There is even those that say the old arena failed because he cut 3000 seats and some skyboxes to get it under budget...making it too small and doomed from the start..if the best way to learn something is to screw it up..this guy should be an expert.
Either way in the land of the blind the one eyed man is king.. so yes he is the voice of reason on the BCC..

Does Frank Carollo want to be Mayor? Does Francis Suarez want to be Mayor? Who will speak up against Marlins Stadium 2.0?

Thank you Commissioner Suarez!

Your work on the Commission is always on the right track. You do your homework and it shows.

I truly admire and appreciate you and hope you will run for Mayor.

I don't live in your district, but I am a big fan.
