If filling in the FEC slip will produce 7+ acres of new land, where exactly will the port proposed 12 acre soccer stadium sit? Will it need addition land, available only from the newly built park to the north.

Corruption at its finest

Bicentennial Park was 28 acres before the two broke museums took 10+/- acres. (4+ acres each). So only 18-19 acres remain. Barely. Beckham's lobbyists say they need 10 to 30 acres. Parking? 150' tall stadium including several parking levels? Soccer needs a huge field. Zoning change required. Terrible idea. Leave Bicentennial Park alone.

Why does the city and county even bother with these entertainment deals? Yes, professional sports are primarily entertainment.

No! No! No! Traffic, a walkway, con men, stadiums. Does anyone chiming in live in downtown? When is the last time anyone went to Parcel B? I was there two weeks ago and it was full of homeless tents.

The stadium needs 9 acres, the rest was for the development which now someone else will do. Stupidity at its finest on display.

Filling slip would require federal, state and county permits and mitigation package. County Class 1 permit would have to go to BCC for approval as well.

No leadership in sight. Not a wisp.

The legislature wouldn't approve film industry tax credits - which is a billion + dollar industry and doesn't kill our environment, but gave tax credits to stadiums using public lands, taking away our park & waterfront property....

It's an epidemic of screwing the taxpayer out of publicly owned land not even mentioning traffic which is abysmal putting it mildly.

Our local pol's suck worse then Tallahassee.

ironic... Wet slips are a huge money maker for the county. However the permitting for dredging bay bottom for new or expanding exisiting marinas is now so arduous the county recently just recreated it own bay. They removed part of the old seawall at Haulover park, dug up a couple of acres of little used parking lots and presto... more wet slips.

The irony is the parking lots WERE the bay bottom. By the time I was a kid in the 70's they built the seawall and dredged the bay bottom to expand the park.

Contact Mayor Tomas Regalado and tell him Hell No.

Lookout Beckham, nobody bends the truth like Carlitos Gimenez and his crew of lobbyists and consultants!

Never underestimate the power of a really stupid idea. And - unfortunately - the power of really stupid people. Yet again we have something stupid to keep our eyes on. Thank you and enjoy your vacation.

Two things on using this site, one you wouldn't just fill it all in, you should use part of it for underground parking at least two levels or so and two you wouldn't have to go all the end, aka you could leave part of the slip just not have it as big. Leaving part of it could be the memorial to the Naval Base and the service they did and allow visiting boat shows to use. They could also use the ends and add boat ties ups along those sections.

Also the Bicentennial park plans were going to use up some of the slip with little island some platform things towards the US-1 side and bridge over the bay side.

Wow, the lack of knowledge on this issue is truly saddening.

(1) The land is not County owned, with the exception of Parcel B, that has been used as a staging area for the last 15 years.

Who goes to there other than the Circus Elephants? It would be wonderful to activate the area with an attraction that will bring people to the waterfront, along with the museums already slated to go there.

(2) The slip is owned by the City, not the County, and it is completely under-utilized. Completely. Might as well put it to use for people to enjoy. In addition, there is no way to make that slip profitable for terminal purposes. That has been proven time and time again, but, pseudo experts on everything thing they have a solution.

(3) The stadium is being built 100% with private funds, and if they locate it on publicly owned land, they have committed to paying fair market value. That means this will result in MONEY that can be used to either defray taxpayer costs for services, or expansion of services (without additional taxes). Don't let the horrible Marlins deal taint this. If you do, you are not paying attention to what is being discussed.

(4) This is a process. There is no location approved. In fact, there is not even a formal proposal to consider.

(5) Calm down, inform yourself, and then make an educated and reasoned opinion.

Beckham and his lobbyists have visited Tallahassee to go after $40 Mil in tax dollars. Beckham and his handlers will not commit to paying a market value rent for anything. Why doesn't Beckham buy the land they say they need from private sellers and build their stadium using 100% private money?

Where are all the people shouting about a "land grab" at the port?

The Straw Buyer said...

Why don't they pay genting fair market value for some of the old Herald site?

Genting owns 10+ acres BUT Genting does not own the streets and avenues that separate its sites. Stadiums needs 10-12 acres that are contiguous. Hell No.

Anyone care about the Watson Island project? Nah, lets just yell about stadiums!

RE: Watson Island

Rolmas, I am very upset about the Watson Island mess. There are two problems - the voters approved the development. The second and biggest problem, the value of that land has skyrocketed since it was voted on and has been dormant. I'd like to see the whole thing revisited because I doubt the voters of today would approve it and at the price that was set over a decade ago. We are getting robbed - again!

I understand why the Girl Scouts fundraise by selling cookies, why the American Cancer Society holds relay
For life events, why the United Way begs soon to be laid off county employees for contributions. I don't understand why there is a need for a profitable venture
to ask for tax money from a cash strapped state and
a debt ridden county. Did Trader Joes ask for
tax dollars to set up in Florida? Bet they contribute more to the economy in the long haul than stadiums. But it's all about construction companies linked to politicians and future casinos.
