Miami, moving into the 21st century like it or not … by gimleteye

“We need a site that can communicate to the whole world the beauty of Miami, the excitement of Miami. It needs to be downtown. It needs to be near the water,” Alschuler said (Beckhan's Lobbyist). “And we’re open to any alternative that can move this community in the 21st century.”

“We need a site that can communicate to the whole world the beauty of Miami, the excitement of Miami. It needs to be downtown. It needs to be near the water … And we’re open to any alternative that can move this community in the 21st century.” That volley by the Beckham soccer stadium forward was instantly blocked by the Royal Caribbean lobbyist who pushed Beckham's to the ground, “If you think you can come down here from New York and tell this community after 125 years that Beckham is going to help us go into the 21st century — I think that’s a little bit insulting."

Insulting? INSULTING? You want to know insulting, read Eye On Miami!

Where were they when I was coaching youth soccer at Bird Road and 120th, driving three times a week from Coral Gables at rush hour, cursing the county commissioners and mayors and other elected officials for the traffic, mind-numbing and robbing Miami of vitality, who turned a blind eye to the over-development, the congestion, latch-key kids everywhere, the moving the UDB and every other piece of nonsense, HABDI, the Performing Arsht Center, the Latin Builders Association promoting suburban sprawl at the expense of quality of life!? Baseball? They called soccer a third tier sport! Putas!

No one gets to play in EOM's stadium of "insulting" views without showing Respect. The nerve!

In 2012, mayoral candidate Joe Martinez balked at the request of the Dolphin stadium renovation group to push the stadium agenda in exchange for campaign financial support. Martinez informed the Dolphin stadium renovation group about the Marlins stadium debacle and flat out told them he would not support any stadium related tax hike. In turn, Carlos Gimenez agreed to push the Dolphins stadium renovation agenda and he received a couple of million in campaign and PAC monies from the Dolphin stadium renovation supporters. Gimenez was elected to office and he tried to push the Dolphin Stadium agenda down our throats. Now, here he comes again with another sports facility boondoggle. This time it's a soccer stadium- yeah right. Truth is Gimenez just cannot pass up a deal that will continue to put monies in his pockets or those of his family members. I assure you that somewhere behind the scenes the Munilla brothers are licking their chops as they wait for those lucrative stadium construction contracts. This is what we get for having a strong armed robbery mayor.

anon above: You are referring to Joe Martinez, who wanted to remove the urban development boundary altogether. Just another developer/lobbyist hack. Let him fade away already.

Given our coastal environment, wonderful weather while others are freezing to death in the winter, and other amenities, pimps like these will continue to come with raps and money to destroy and take advantage of what we have. They key is that we can't have greedy stupid people making stupid decisions.

I like rent subsidies about as much as I like the bloated crop insurance program (which is not much). This is as much about rents as it is parking and political campaigns. It will be interesting to see that all play out.

There is an upcoming list of 20 mayors not wanting this about to be published. Hope you post it to this blog.

When they show the Heat games, they always use footage of the Miami skyline and the beach shots - the actual arena isn't even in most of them.
Same thing with the last Super Bowl we had here. All the parties and events were on the Beach or other places - it didn't matter that the stadium was in Miramar. The tv announcers even made it sound like the parties were right outside the stadium gates.
Put this thing in Homestead, near the speedway, and you'll still get your full stadium the 24 days you want to use it and the tv cameras will still show the water and 'beauty of Miami'

So true. All the comments.

TV producers do not show the inside of Marlins Stadium because it is almost completely empty. (1,000 paid tickets sold?)

Every show uses the Miami skyline and Biscayne Bay and Miami's mansions in their promos. Beckham and his bosses could go to Hialeah or even Miramar. Miami's scenery still makes it on TV.

Remember the Marlins scam? $3 Bil in debt service...

It seems in the world of EOM, everything Miami sucks. What are you still doing here?

Much of Miami is great. The politicians and their sleazy lobbyist pals suck. We want Miami for Miami residents, not pond scum NYC promoters.

In the world of EOM, the light shines on the carpetbaggers and the home grown con artists. What are you doing still reading if much of everything Miami politicians do sucks? Because you know it's true.

I am here because it is a beautiful place that promoters are trying to fuck up. I want to shine a light on the people who want to make Florida into a polluted mess because they are profit driven. Paradise does not produce profit for long.

...all of you complained and complained when those beautiful buildings which make up Miami's skyline, we're being erected by the water. Now, everyone loves it and shows it off. Go figure.

Just wait until a powerful hurricane hits those "beautiful buildings". That is one thing about south Florida. It has a way of cleansing itself after a while.

Huge hurricanes like Andrew have come and went. Buildings had windows blown off, but are still standing. Now, Homestead was a different outcome altogether.

Homestead got a direct hit. Downtown Miami didnot experience a direct hit. But when it does, the glass will land all the way to the west coast.

Question Time to Mr. Beckham and Mayor Gimenez:

'Why does it cost $ 250M dollars to build a soccer specific stadium at probable & favorable county leased land at the Port of Miami/Dodge Island when previous 4 out of 5 MLS stadiums were built for less money:

1) BMO Stadium in Toronto - $ 69.4M in 2014 $$$$
2) Saputo Stadium in Montreal - $ 70M in 2014 $$$$
3) PPL Park in Chester, PA (Philadelphia/Delaware River) - $ 130M in 2014 $$$$
4) BBVA Stadium in Houston - $ 95.5M in 2014 $$$$

Who is getting the kickback?

The NYC speculators want control over 36 acres at PortMiami to build "whatever they want to build", including maybe a soccer stadium. They want taxpayer owned land with views of downtown at a discount. Once Gimenez signs off on this scam watch the speculators flip the "deal" to other speculators.
