Ultra Accident Critically Injures Guard. By Geniusofdespair

According to Timothy F. Schmand, Executive Director Bayfront Park Management Trust, a tragic incident transpired at the Ultra Music Festival last evening.  Gate crashers pushed a fence over on a security guard causing grave injuries to the guard.  She is currently in hospital in critical condition.

Commissioner Carollo should be ashamed to continuously back this event. He is the chairman of the Byfront trust. He and Ultra need to go!

This is what happens when you disregard public safety and you decide to replace police officers with security guards at an even that draws thousands of participants. It takes years of training to coordinate these sort of special events but narrow minded politicians, with no police experience and full of themselves cut corners and cause accidents. Hope that poor woman recovers from this terrible tragedy.

Ultra Festival is all about money. The organizers make a fortune and police officers want off duty assignments to pad their pay. The noise is deafening and it is a nuisance to all the neighbors. Then you have the gridlock traffic all the felony arrests and now this poor 28 year old security guard gets trampled. Shut it down.

People come from around the world for this festival. Its more than what's going on in Bayfront Park. It's all over Dade County. It is a major money-maker not only for promoters, but for the community at large. Instead of jumping to the "shut it down" mode, maybe we should question why the two weekends at bayfront was put back to one. Maybe we should question why its so hard to access when hundreds of dollars are paid for a ticket. Maybe we should question why the security system was so undermanned and barricades were so flimsy. Traffic problems? We can't really pin that on Ultra since most of them take the Metro. Noise? Get some earplugs. Visit the Grove or the Gables. If you don't like it, do something else. Don't shut down this major money-maker because of a stupid mistake.

It was very sad to hear this and I hope the young lady survives. Hindsight is 20/20 as they say but why was she there by herself with thousands of people? Where were the on duty police?

If the City of Miami has issues with Ultra Fest, just wait until you see the real Soccer fans and the hoodlums that go along with them.

Fans are paying $500 a ticket for this event. Hotels are filled. The revenue this brings in cannot be ignored. Better coordination with on duty police officers can contain the problems.

Felony arrests? Well, pick any night club in South Beach on any day of the week and it would be about the same. The difference being the police aren't in those clubs looking for people breaking the law!

I am all for keeping ULTRA.

This is an example over an area that is over planned. Let's add soccer, a nail clipper and gambling facilities to the 1.5 mile stretch of Biscayne blvd. Lets see if we can kill the desire for urban living by overwhelming the residents who live there. Sure they buy into the downtown walk everywhere life style, but keeping them hostage in their apartments and keeping them up all night most weekends of the year (not to mention, the constant road closures for events) is not what urban living is supposed to be.

Residents in residential neighborhoods don't have tolerate constant events.... Unless of course you live on the beach, miami or coconut grove where elective officials forget their residents need some attention too.

Give urban folks a break. Stop over permitting events and attractions on Biscayne blvd.

By the way, who pays for the replacement of the landscaping, repairs to the facilities, and the law suit that ultra, Miami Dade county and the city will be served with over the injured woman?

The City of Miami is responsible for this incident. If the fencing was not up to standards, the permit for the event should have been revoked. Someone had to sign off on the permit. Deflecting accountability by blaming Ultra and their fans is pure bureaucratic shuffling. The event permit must have stipulated the proper fencing. Who allowed this to proceed without meeting all of the conditions of the permit. It is time for Al Crespo to investigate!

The City of Miami is responsible for what happened. Mayor Regalado and Commissioner Sarnoff need to talk to the staff that approved this event.

If you live long enough ....... never thought Id see the Woodstock generation complaining about evdnts like these. Must be the long term effects of the Brown Acid.
I sincerely hope the security guard recovers and is compensated for her injuries.

What happened to the security guard is sad but as usual the politicians at City of Miami are just playing games to deflect their responsibility and mistakes in planning. I am so happy that G-O-D is in favor of this event. If anything they need to add a free concert or two. Events like this make Miami an interesting place to live on the edge of a swamp and soon to be submerged....

I find some of these comments funny at best. Are any of these people residents? I live at the Vizcayne (directly across the street). Was it noisy, yes! Was it out of control, no? As a matter of fact I, along with hundreds of resident in my building, enjoyed the show from our pool deck.

I am sure people complained but that will always happen. I was able to go out on Saturday and Sunday (driving) with very little interference. The funny thing is the lot across the street, which is usually full on weekends, was empty.

Now I feel bad about the security guard, but you can blame the City of Miami. There was a gross shortage of uniformed officers. I have been to events in many cities and have never seen so few officers for an event this huge.

I also lived in Miami Beach for 15 years, and the City of Miami should spend sometime talking to the folks over at the beach.

This is a great event and for those feeling sorry for us, residents, keep it. The event was over by midnight and 11 on Sunday. Not a big deal.

Sincerely,

Downtown Resident

I was with tourists this weekend who were shocked at Ultra. They hated the whole scene. Had they known Ultra and music events were taking over they would have visited another time, or another place. By the way, they were paying $650, $900 and $3,000 per night for their various hotel rooms.

It was an accident , accidents happens . She would recover

It was not an accident. The kids tore down a fence and trampled over the guard that is not an accident. However I think more precautions should be met and the concert should go on. The behavior of the few does not justify the punishment for the many.
