Hialeah Out of Control. By Geniusofdespair

Former Hialeah Mayor Raul Martinez

Yes, Raul Martinez --- Long time Mayor of Hialeah --- ran against the current mayor, but for Mayor Carlos Hernandez to sponsor a resolution to strip Raul's name from City Hall, that sounds like something a totalitarian regime would do like....You know what country goes here.  From the Miami Herald:

The Hialeah City Council Tuesday night approved a resolution to remove the names of former Mayor Raúl Martinez, his wife Angela and former state Sen. Roberto Casas from three municipal properties.

As the audience applauded, the council unanimously passed the three resolutions, sponsored by current Mayor Carlos Hernandez.

The properties include City Hall, a low-income apartment complex and a small park.

This isn't like the case with Lynda Bell naming a building after her mother -- who did nothing in the community except to spawn Lynda Bell. Raul Martinez has been in public service since 1971. So bad blood between Mayors can obliterate your name from Miami Dade County? Good to know. Let's get rid of the name Stephen P. Clark
from County Hall while we are in this mindset. You might not like Raul Martinez (he was cleared of any wrong-doing) but he was a force in Hialeah for over 30 years, you just don't 'forgettaboutit'. Last I spoke with him, he was looking into corruption in his city. Hialeah never ceases to amaze me. They do what they did in the old days, in that other place I will not name, and don't see it even though it is clear as a bell.

I say, remove EVERY name of EVERY politician from EVERY building and roadway in Miami-Dade!

Many in the Hialeah council were applauding Martinez just a few years ago.

I don't agree with naming stuff after living people but once you do, you should not remove the name out of retaliation.

It shows you how ugly and low the people in Miami-Dade County have become. I hate to be known as someone from here.

You can't explain our politics and or resident's behavior to any one outside of here without feeling slightly scummy because of it.

No public buildings or streets or roads should EVER be named after living people. Too many of the "living people" end by convicted of being corrupt or of being drug dealers. Some even admit to injecting illegal steroids.

Well, the county has that rule. And then we ended up with roads named for Cuban war heroes who never lived here and buildings and bridges named after politicians parents.

Building naming for slimy politicians with egos strutting around like Roosters .... yup, pretty much hate that.

Military veterans and troops are dying every day for this country, and we are talking about this?

Street namings for accident victims, I think that is usually not appropriate.

No schools named after people you're brown-nosing either, Carlos Curbello. We're on to you.

This whole thing creeps me out.

Numbers on streets are so efficient and easy to use why clutter peoples minds with names of worthless human excrement (Jose Canseco, Leonel Martinez,Abel Holtz, etc etc etc.)

Though I agree wholeheartedly with not naming streets or structures after live politicians, this move in Hialeah by Hernandez was overt and tasteless. A sign that power is going to his cabeza.

Where were you when Martinez placed his name on the city hall? That was disgraceful. It absolutely should be removed.

Hialeah City Hall was named after Raul Martinez after he was out of office by the City Council of which Carlos Hernandez was part, not by Raul Martinez

You have it ass backwards. The totalitarian part was naming everything after Martinez. Just like Stalin and Stalingrad. Reversing that is a sign that democracy has finally taken root.

County Commish had a building named after her mother? Remember Abel Holtz in Miami Beach? He got a street and a stadium named after him THEN he got indicted and arrested for bribing a Mayor. Prison too.

Why do you mention Lynda Bell when you discuss building naming, but never mention the "Rebeca Sosa Theater" in Miami Springs?

I live in Miami Springs and I wretch whenever I see an advertisement for an event there. It should be called Taxpayer's Theater.

That is crazy re: the theater in Miami Springs. Was that a city or county vote and project?

Rebecca Sosa Theater? Ick. How did that happen?

The Rebeca Sosa Theater in Miami Springs was a county project built with county taxpayer money. As a county commissioner, Sosa took credit as if it were her money. She is also from West Miami, not Miami Springs.

I love what they are doing in Hialeah to remove Martinez's crooked name from their city hall. My faith in democracy would be restored if the Miami Springs council voted to take Sosa's name off our auditorium.

Let's dare them! Who thinks they'll remove Rebeca Sosa's name?

Hialeah taxpayers money was spent in naming the buildings. Again, taxpayers money is being spent in removing the names. Shouldn't taxpayers money be spent wisely, such as fixing pot holes on streets, making the community safer, etc.

Sosa also has a REC center in West Miami.
Lets stop this now!
