Boycott Cory Booker and Big Sugar Money in Miami … by gimleteye

Big Sugar poisons people, poisons Democracy, and poisons the Everglades. The time has long passed, when citizens ought to have demanded a no-sugar money pledge from elected officials.

So campaign contributors: please boycott the Saturday afternoon reception / fundraiser for rising Democratic star, Cory Booker, in Miami.

Big Sugar runs Florida politics. The industry exerts its political influence in Washington, where farm policies guarantee a money spigot into political campaigns.

In South Florida, Big Sugar always had a sweet tooth for cultivating the totems of African American leadership.

On both sides of the aisle -- Sugar and the African American politicians who benefit -- the cozy relationship avoid that minorities and the poor are disproportionately affected by the impacts of sugar; disease through sugar-filled diets and the loss of fundamental environmental protections.

For example, African Americans traditionally fish the canal system in South Florida. For minorities the canal system has been a source of food and nutrition. These days the canals are extremely dangerous to public health. Thank Big Sugar and its sickly grip on water management practices that allow mercury to accumulate in its most toxic form.

The Fanjul brothers split the task of raising money for Republicans and Democrats. Let Booker know that you won't be coming to the event or contributing any money that bears the stamp of the Big Sugar / Florida disaster.

What's Bittel doing hanging out with the Fanjuls?

They must be glad for a little company.

Perfect opportunity for a public demonstration against Big Sugar with people with signs and placards marching along Purdy Av and in boats off shore. There may still be some national media in town for Art Basel.

He is the new vote on the block. Has anyone explained the situation to him? He just got there as doesnot know who is who or what's what yet. He is probably still hiring staff and getting his advisers. A letter or phone call would let him know everything is not what it appears to be.

It would have to be a phone call. He has tens of thousands of letters, and no one yet to read them all.

Cory Booker? Hanging out wit this group is very upsetting. What a disappointment.

He probably knows very little about big sugar or the issues involved here. What they do is try to tie them down as soon as they step foot in the Senate. Given that fact, and everyone knows it, he can take money from anyone and still vote against their issue. The key is we need to make sure he is aware of our issues. He may be looking for a good environmental staffer and maybe someone from the Florida environmental community should inquire.

I sent an email to his campaign imploring him to bail out of the fundraiser. I see Cory Booker as a man of the people. This charade makes him a man of the corporation.
