Kendale Elementary School Parents Up in Arms at Name Change. By Geniusofdespair

The school is 40 years old and has been Kendale Elementary School for 40 years. Now they want to change the name to Diaz-Balart Elementary. Nobody knows who suggested this unpopular change but I will find out. The community was so mad 175 showed up at the meeting to nix the new name.

Diaz-Balart Elementary?! The Diaz-Balarts should publicly come out against this or perhaps they were in on it, which makes them complete narcissists.

What a waste of a school name. To the local Cuban community that name might represent something, but to the rest of us its those crazy Cubans at it again. Diaz Balart got the school named because there Cuban and live in Miami. If this school was in any other city in Florida, this would not happen.

The National Education Association gave Congressperson Mario Diaz-Balart a 17% rating on public education votes.

Ironic. The Pubs are creating a vast
Charter school system and D B wants
a public school named after him? Re -name
a charter school. Haven't we learned not
to name anything after living people?

Oh no, that means one day a school or day care center will be named after Marco Rubio as well. Baaaarrrrrrrfffff

They named the law school at FIU after Rafael Diaz-Balart. Diaz-Balart served as Majority Leader of the Cuban House of Representatives and Minister of the Interior during the presidency of Fulgencio Batista. The Interior Ministry didn't control National Parks. It controlled the secret police and used torture and kidnapping to control the population. So the don't need an elementary school named after Rafael. Maybe it's named after MIrta Diaz-Balart, the former wife of Fidel Castro and mother of "Fidelito" Castro Diaz-Balart. Not likely. How about Jose Diaz-Balart, the Telemundo newscaster? Not likely. Lincoln Diaz-Balart? Not a stalwart champion of public education and neither is Mario. Why? Is Carlos Curbelo trying to get a favor to ensure that the Diaz-Balart brother support him in his primary?

For the information on who is behind this, send a FOIA request to the Citizens Info Department at 305-995-1128. For some reason, Alex Martinez was being evasive. Of course they know who suggested this renaming. Dr. Martinez, you must remember -- you work for us. Perhaps we should call for your resignation for not giving up that information to the 500 people who showed up at that meeting. We'll give you a day. Maybe you can make the call for us. Hmmm?

Cato, II, I think you've got it right. Was Curbelo there or was he hiding?

Disgusting. This whole process is a terrible example of out-of-control egos.

In Miami termed out Commissioner Spence-Jones is trying to rename 3-4 historic neighborhoods so she can pander to future County voters. Spence wants to run against County Commissioner Audrey Edmonson so to pander to N. Miami Haitians Spence wants to rename much of Miami as Little Haiti. Ick. amelyle 7080

What that family did in Cuba years ago has no bearing on why a American school should be named for a family who have done nothing for south Florida. We have a school in west Kendall named Mas Conosa after another Cuban that did nothing for south Florida, besides wanting to be president of a free Cuba as long as others did the dirty work of getting rid of Castro. Have you all no shame, lets cut this crap and name schools for real Americans who deserve the honor of having a school named after them. What about all the dead Americans of Cuban heritage who served in our military and gave their lives for our freedom. Lets name schools after these real American heroes.

To this day we do not have a school named after Dr. Jonas Salk who saved the lives of many children during the days of the polio epidemic.
Stop this naming of politicians that have done nothing but hinder and destroy public education. Rename and name charter schools after the Diaz Balarts, Marco Rubio and David Rivera. This is definitely North Cuba. Its absolutely disgusting and disrespectful.
Kendale Elementary parents, friends and concern citizens Stand your ground on this one.

Insane. Politicians are just insane. We need smarter voters.

Even the Miami Herald is investigating Spence-Jones's recent decisions. Naming a City building after oft-indicted Arthur Teele? Only 5-6 weeks until we are rid of her. Counting down the days.

As a 40-plus year resident of the Kendale community, my wife and I were completely appalled this week when attending the meeting to discuss the proposed renaming of the school to Diaz Balart Elementary. Let me start by saying that this is nothing personal against the Diaz Balart family; Region 5 Superintendent Alex Martinez, who is obviously looking for a promotion; or Mr. Curbelo, the School Board member in attendance who is apparently looking to seek higher office.

It was evident from the get-go that Mr. Martinez, who was dressed like he belonged as an extra on the Sopranos, had every intention of avoiding telling the attendees "WHO" had proposed the name change. Mr. Martinez ensured he went over the entire procedure on how the name change would proceed, but the citizens read right through his political jargon and wanted nothing of it!

When pressed for the information, Mr. Martinez was quick to hide behind Chapter 119, the Florida Statute that governs public records, and said that anyone wanting the info could make the request. Are you kidding? Why be evasive about this information and not just share it with the community, Mr. Martinez? At that point you lost all trust and credibility of those in attendance.

Most disturbing was Mr. Martinez's reply when he was posed with the question of who would be responsible for the costs of the name change, and he stated the costs would be assumed by the School Board. Really? The Kendale budget, which just last year was rumored to not have enough funding to buy basic materials, such as toilet paper and paper towels, would now be used to fund the name changing?????? Where have our priorities shifted to?

There were plenty of young families with great ideas on how to more appropriately utilize the funds the name change would require. Among them was the much needed improvement of the school's computer lab and the purchase of school supplies. They even suggested using this money towards improving the security of the school. The wall on the north side of the property can easily be scaled by a fleeing felon or even a sexual predator targeting a young child. Why hasn't anyone worried about that in the last 45 years? Just because something "hasn't" happened doesn't mean it "won't."

In conclusion, this whole fiasco seemed like two puppets, Martinez and Curbelo, trying to ingratiate themselves with certain people as part of their quest for promotion or higher office.

Thanks for going and sharing your observations. Looks like they sent these two peons to face the parents and community people. To get this changed, they must stay focused and on top of the issue every step of the way. Maybe they will move the name to a charter school, or a vacant lot.

Thanks for sharing. This is just as bad as the Rebeca Sosa Multipurpose Facility in West Miami and the Rebeca Sosa Theatre in Miami Springs.

Great post above regarding the meeting notes (lol). It was great to see old and young people coming together for a common cause. I too was there and the only thing the poster above left out was the couple (late 20's/early 30's) that stayed in the back of the cafeteria throughout the meeting and then were buzzing around Martinez and Curbelo. The guy was wearing a tan colored suit and the girl was wearing a tan or gold top and black pants. They looked more like someone from a politician's staff than concerned citizens... Makes you wanna say hmmmmmmmm. Those two looked like they were there to take the community's temperature on the issue. I'm sure they went back to whatever political cesspool they cam from and said the people were HOT!

Please don't let this topic go by the wayside. The people need to know who made the request for this name change!

To the racist in a previous post bashing Cubans, I'm an American-Cuban, born and raised here in South Florida, I live in the Kendale Community and was there to oppose any name change no matter who it was. Your post is ignorant as can be since many of those in attendance are most likely of Cuban descent as well.

Now back to the topic, I would really like to know who proposed this name change and I would not not be surprised if it was one of the Kendale communities own, Curbelo, guy is a disgrace, coming out and pretending to care about the school. Please leave and join some other community out west where your politico advances would be better accepted.
