The biggest increases are in either major urban centers or on the ocean. Note to cities/UMSA: Sprawl development doesn't pay anyone except the developers who can pack up and move on. Not that these numbers will knock any sense into the zoning boards approving this stuff or the county with no infrastructure allowing it. It costs city's more to service sprawl and this is just a small snapshot as to how much property value has been lost in sprawl development which will cause areas to raise taxes or cut services. I think the UMSA numbers are probably worse in the sales market versus what's been assessed by the property appraiser.

UMSA needs to go away. The County is holding these areas hostage for political power.

Here's one for you. At the end of last year, Homestead Councilman Stephen Shelley bought a house for $225,000. It does not appear to a distress or short sale. The sale price shoud be close to fair market value for tax purposes. Well, the tax assessor thinks that Shelley paid too much for the house and assesses it at $177,000 nearly fifty grand less than he just paid for it !! Factor in the homestead exemption and he is paying tax on a hundred grand less than he paid for it. I'm not saying that Shelley got any preference, I AM saying that based upon this example, the new assessor has his head up his butt or is playing politics. Either way, its not fair...

I don't think the Homestead example has anything to do with politics.

None of the houses in my area are
assessed at anything close to what me and my neighbors recently paid.

I'm paying taxes based on a number much lower but since I plan on sticking around for a couple more years I'm not gonna complain.
