The Sun Sentinel could get even worse. By Geniusofdespair

David and Charles Koch.

Charles and David Koch want to buy the Broward based Sun Sentinel, among other newspapers. I want to propose that they also buy this blog. I will sell my half for a pittance.

Do we really want these guys in the newspaper business. Haven't they done enough to disrupt America?

Looks like Charles Koch is the bigger troublemaker from this graphic (above). If you look at all these right wing think-tanks that he funds, it makes the thought of his running a newspaper that much more scary. All of these think-tanks will have easy publication opportunities in the mainstream media if the brother's own the newspapers. This would be much worse than Rupert Murdoch owning the Wall Street Journal. Looks like I am not the only one that thinks this buy is a bad idea. The Los Angeles Times reports:
California legislative leaders and 10 public employee unions announced opposition Wednesday to any sale of the Los Angeles Times and other Tribune Co. newspapers to a pair of wealthy brothers who fund conservative causes. In a letter dated Tuesday to Bruce Karsh, president of Oaktree Capital Management, the largest shareholder in Tribune Co., and chairman of its board of directors, the unions said David and Charles Koch are "anti-labor, anti-environment, anti-public education and anti-immigrant."

William Koch at his West Palm Beach office. Yes, that is the America's Cup in the background.
Why don't we hear about Bill Koch, the other brother? What's up with him?

This is from a recent interview with William Koch - the other Koch brother:

I’d been in the alternative energy business. We had owned seven power plants, almost all of them except for one was alternative energy. I owned three in Nevada, two in the Phillippines, two in Costa Rica, and I had an investment in a wood-fired power plant in Maine. So we knew the economics of these plants pretty well. I had my staff put together an economic analysis of an offshore wind farm and found out that unless you got a huge government subsidy it wasn’t going to be economical. You’d have to get 25 cents a kilowatt hour when the market in Massachusetts was 7 or something. I looked at it and said this is uneconomical unless you get some real fat contracts or a big government subsidy.

It is amazing how Libertarians all subscribe to government handouts...to themselves.

And, the rich keep getting richer, William Koch just won punitive damages in the amount of $12 million dollars in his lawsuit over vintage wines. "Koch said he planned to use the $12m to continue his crusade to clean up the wine auction industry..." Worthy cause? Sounds like "Let them eat cake" to me.

Aren't there any REAL newspaper people left to own papers?

No, silly person. A real newspaper owner is like finding a sports franchise owner who bought the team because he played that sport in high school.

It is all about money and power.

I grew up in NH in the 70s and 80s. There was an Olympic XC skiier named Bill Koch from Putney, VT. He was a bit of a kook but one that everybody would love. His similarly kooky (not cokey) father successfully changed his name to Coke-Is-It after becoming frustrated people would always mis-pronounce his name (it isn't kotch, like the NYC Mayor). It is ironic that the unknown Koch Brother would have a similar surname as the kooky Koch from Vermont. Even though he looks like a Lisa Birnbach illustration.

Long legal battle between the brothers. Bill was bought out of the company. Bill has reconciled with David. He was his best man at his latest wedding.

Wow! If they're responsible for the Slone-Kettering Cancer Center, they're saints in my book! As a cancer survivor I can attest to the fact that SK is a miraculous organization where patients are provided the best care, whether or not they can pay for it!

Boycott all Kock Bros. industry products.

The cancer donations are good but: "But what has drawn controversy is that the brothers give many millions to far-right organizations dedicated to spreading an Ayn Rand-infused ideology, one in which a benevolent business class flourishes, unfettered by taxes and regulations. Some have called it free-market fundamentalism."

Fools and their money will soon depart. If the LA Times is such a poorly run, cash sucking organization, you all should be happy they are investing in this newspaper. All their cash will be sucked up propping up the paper so they will not have any left to give to the right wing nuts. Cheer them forward or are you afraid they might actually succeed and end up producing a conservative leaning newspaper.

I knew David Koch from NYC. He was charming and fun. Very open minded. I hope he buys up all the newspapers he wants. Someone needs to speak out against super sized government. Elected officials are overpaid and elected officials stay in office too long. Government Unions use their lobbyists to exert excessive pay and benefit packages from dumb and greedy elected officials.

The Koch brothers are donating $400 Mil to $1 Billion per year. These brothers give away more per year than the City of Miami takes in with 4,000+ employees and 400,000 residents.

Did you not bother reading the blog? They are the very reason we have a super sized government because they expect and take government handouts.

Damn, you mean I decided to take a long hiatus a couple weeks too early? Since the big rumor is that I "retired" because I was paid off, maybe I need to come back and you and me Genius can sell ourselves to these Koch brothers for big money and actually get paid off.

Oh well, if the Sun-Sentinel goes the Miami Herald won't be far behind, because they'll chase those Koch brothers down and demand to be bought out because they really are the kind of first class whores that would be absolutely happy to do whatever the Koch brothers told them to.

Keep an eye out Genius. If you spot any more big money tricksters on the horizon looking to buy someone out let me know, and maybe we can do a package deal. :-)

Unbelievable that people don't care that free speech will be bought, mangled and spewed back to us in the form of Fox News on steroids. The propaganda machine will drone on convincing us to give up our rights, work for pennies and hate our neighbors because they might need help feeding their children. All the while we will applaud the Koch leeches as they promote subsidies upon subsidies to their friends and cronies. They want to enslave us in poverty of mind, spirit, bank account and health.

Al you are right-- highest bidder!!

When will you be writing an article about Nazi collaborator and financial criminal George Soros who has tried to manipulate our elections with his ill-gotten millions?

Or is Soros off-limits because he is giving to Democrats?

Anonymous said...

Better to have the Koch's in charge then the Bruno Barrerio's, and the Spence-Jones's in charge. Selling votes for cash? We are better off with Libertarians in charge.

Geniusofdespair said...

Petey facts don't matter to you I see. When Soros attempts to buy a newspaper, you can start your own blog and complain all you want. Go for it.

George Soros legally profited from a trade in foreign exchange involving the British currency. Soros hated George Bush Jr because Soros thought Bush was an idiot. Soros likely hates stupid Democrats too. By the way, most years George Soros donates over $1 BILLION to various charities.

I love all the people who say that billionaires are great because, after all, look at how much they donate to charity.

First of all, where do you think they got this money from? From you and me and government subsidies that allow them to profit of off us.

And secondly, why do you think most of them contribute to these charities? Sure, a small part of it might be altruism. But the real reason is tax benefits. If these people were so altruistic in the first place they wouldn't be where they are.

I prefer Soros, Paul Tudor Jones and the Koch brothers to lying corrupt scum like Manny Diaz, Carlos Alvares, Bruno Barrerio, Carlos Gimenez...
