Support Kaitlyn Hunt ... by gimleteye

More than 100,000 people have signed the petition to the assistant state attorney in Indian River who is prosecuting an 18 year old girl who had a same-sex relationship with a younger woman. Kaitlyn Hunt's father writes, "Kailtyn’s girlfriend’s parents are pressing charges because they are against the same-sex relationship, even though their daughter has stated that this is a consensual relationship. The two girls began dating while Kaitlyn was 17 but her girlfriend’s parents blamed Kailtyn for their daughter’s homosexuality. They waited until after Kaitlyn turned 18 and went to the police to have charges brought against her."

Sign the petition here.

This is so wrong, on so many levels. The first poster is correct. This High-School senior couldn't find anyone her own age? She had to go to a junior-high school to find someone?

Please be aware that the parents of the 14-year old have pressed charges against the 18-year old.

"18 year old girl who had a same-sex relationship with a younger woman." - What a misrepresentation on your part, shame on you. The girl was 14 years old and they did it in the high school bathroom. If this was a boy praying on a girl I would hope there would be an arrest as well. The fact these were two woman should not be a consideration. There is a difference in the physical and mental development of a 14 year old freshman and an 18 year old senior.

I am not part of this.

What makes it ok for a 18 y/o girl to sleep with a 14 y/o girl, while most of the world would be yelling for a 18 y/o boy doing the same thing to be locked up?

Genius,
Don't say you are not part of this, it is in your blog.

The law is the law.
Homosexuals clamor for equality under the law. A 14 year-old cannot have consensual sex.
The law must treat the 18-year old as is stated. Regardless of gender.

This blog lost a lot of credibility with this post.

We are two independent bloggers with no control over what the the other person posts. We both have free speech. I am not part of this particular post. Eye on Miami is not my blog. It is OUR blog but this is Gimleteye's blog post. We agree to disagree on some issues that we post on. This is one. I have never asked him to remove a post.

Don't threaten us with losing credibility, we have been incredible since we started and remain so. If you don't like us, there is the Miami Herald or other blogs. At least we tackle tough subjects.

People should give careful consideration before signing this petition. Many would view it as a list of pedophiles or pedophile sympathizers. Just because someone you know and respect puts something in your face to sign, does not mean you should sign it. This is how group-think happens. Have your head about you at all times, think about what it means, and whether it is something you feel strongly about. If one were looking for law violators in this regard, a list like this might be a helpful starting place.

Uh yeah, since when can a minor child, a 14 year old consent to anything?
There is that credibility problem again.

I'm really confused on how I feel about this. While I believe in total equality for LGBT, I think part of that equality might be rules against under age consent.
As other posters have mentioned, if this were an 18 yr old boy with 15 yr old girl, most people would have a problem with it (and it would be illegal)
I hate the fact that it's possible the 15 yrs old's parents are pushing for this probably only because it is a homosexual relationship though. But who knows, if it were an 18 year old boy, they probably would be opposed to it as well.
I didn't sign the petition.

If she were male, everyone would be screaming to throw the book at him. This girl should have known better than to get involved with a 14-year-old. The fact that it is a same-sex relationship is irrelevant. She should get whatever punishment an 18-year-old boy would get for the same thing

If an 18 yr old man has sex with his 14 yr old g/f, it's a crime. This case should be no different

This "request for signatures" supporting these two people is inadvertently doing great harm to the gay/lesbian community.

It's either equality or not equal. This sets the precedence for arguing that gays are requesting special treatment and thus undermines the fight for equality.

Yawn... this is just one group using tbe law to coerce people even children into doing things their way. Of note, the parents knew this was going on for years when both kids were minors and went out of their way to use the law to condemn a child. I call that an abuse of the legal system and bad parenting. The parents will obvioisly lose any respect for their parents... this can only end badly.

I concur with the poster who wrote that this blog lost credibility today. You overreacted and saw a "threat". I don't see a threat when a supporter gives me positive criticism.
This blog is not the place to request support for an criminal violation that transcends gay issues. This is a case in which the law was broken and now the accused seeks preferential treatment because of her sexual orientation. Bad choice for either if the blog's administrators.

I agree. Pedophilia should be legal for gays. Let's also demonize anyone who attempts to enforce our sex predator laws.

Gays want equality (except when it comes to adults having sex with kids.)

Many people feel that homosexuals are also pedophiles. This linkage is firmly established in the American psyche. This is why there is much opposition to them adopting children as it is generally felt that they would sexually abuse the children under their care. This is also why the Boy Scouts have a problem with them.

145,000 people signed so far.

Not surprised by that number. The number reflects a high percentage of how many people do not understand how the consent laws work and what it means to be a minor child.
I would bet those same people would support children entering into contracts. Having to explain things like this to people is infantile.

Thank you for posting this and for addressing this topic. It is difficult, and its good that some people have the courage to stand up on this I applaud you!
Why does this matter to "Gays"? Like ever heard of Oscar Wilde??? Did you know he served time in a "hard labor" camp and died shortly thereafter?
Because the history of persecution of gays is all about using these laws against gay sexual behavior. Str8s do not understand that. Sex in bathrooms, sex in public parks, all distasteful things in the hetero-sexual world but for gays this was sex for at least 400 years since the Industrial Revolution and gays started to meet each other in cities.
Gays might be divided by this, but remember ever heard of Oscar Wilde? I mean this is the kind of stuff that was used against gays since the laws of 18C and 19C gay oppression took shape. To gays this is big to str8s it just seems weird. While there may be a gay "ghetto" mentality among these supports people need to understand why and where it comes from.
On this case in particular I think that it is relevant that the relationship was ongoing before the accused was 18yo, and that it was being used by the parents of the "victim" because they are homophobic. Also gays, unlike str8s do not realize their sexuality thru a mainstream form and especially in a hick town where this happened, and there are still few role models, or youth groups for them to meet peers. You cant both prevent mainstream GLBT student groups and then turn around and attack gay affairs among minors. That just shows outright biases. Pedophile laws, bestiality, sodomy, laws against women's control of their own sexuality have all been traditionally lumped together and used against "deviants" foremost being the GLBT community. Now I am NOT saying they are all the same, only that we need to realize that they have been lumped together. To "mainstream" and accept not just tolerate gays outside of the gay ghettos of NYC, London, Paris is to start a conversation about how young gays can lead healthy lives in the sticks like this...

The kids were 14 and 17 when they started dating and the relationship was legal. Then one day their relationship suddenly became illegal because one of them had a birthday? I'm tired of having my Florida tax dollars wasted on trivial garbage like this. Let the girl go and focus on catching real sex offenders.

To the Anon who was confused and did not sign, this was an important life lesson. Whenever people are pressing you to commit or to sign something, and you feel confused, don't commit or sign it. This goes for relationships, contracts, business deals, petitions, or anything where people are asking you to sign your name. And it does not matter the status, relationship, position, importance, or popularity of the person/s who are asking you to sign. In life, we all have to account for our actions.

Please Google Marcus Dixon, the black Georgia high school student who was sentenced to ten years in prison for the statutory rape of a 16 year old classmate. That case was over ten years ago. I am a full supporter of gay rights. However, I support equal rights. The minor's parents' motivation is irrelevant. They may be bad people, but the law is on their side. The 18 year old in this case ought to have stayed away from someone that much younger than her. Equality means being treated the same, otherwise, what's the point?
