Steve Ross and Jorge Perez: Build your own monuments ... by gimleteye

The message: if you are billionaires and expect taxpayers to fund your monuments, don't expect help from South Florida voters. We have had enough of lobbyists and political merchandisers. How much is it really worth to renovate the Dolphin's stadium? Whatever the private shareholders are willing to pay.

There's so much to say on this. Both of these guys are in a partnership to bail out US Century Bank without a plan to pay back the taxpayers their full investment $50 million. I'd be adding interest too at this point. I applaud capitalism. I won't condone it on the backs of the taxpayers or making money off of government contracts. That's not a free market it's a creative way to avoid bank financing like most people have to use. Make all the money you want, spend it as you please - even on an ill conceived plan of buying legislators like the NRA post below, but don't expect the taxpayers to put up with it any longer, do this kind of stuff on you own with your own money. As to Norman Braman, he again is the hero of the community as he should. "Walk softly and carry a big stick" and so Braman goes. If any Dem out there feels like hugging a Rep, I'd suggest Weatherford. This was a no win at all levels for the State House and he knew it. I give him credit too.

The biggest loser - Carlos Gimenez. If you're running on a campaign of anti Marlins, supporting this was a joke beyond belief. The joke's on him. He will be challenged, though let's see how much damage before he's not re elected.

I saw the tv ad with Mike Dee showing the poor physical condition of the stadium. My question to the Dolphin owners: Why have you not been making improvements periodically when you needed to? The Marlins free money from the taxpayers would have failed also if citizens had voted.

Steve Ross has made his billions buying real estate and paying not a penny more than they are worth. But he'd like us to believe that he didn't realize that the Joe Robbie/Fruit of the Loom/Jimmy Buffet Beer Stadium was incredibly hot in the summer. Instead of paying Wayne Huizenga $500 million for it, maybe he should have negotiated harder and paid half. With the savings, he could have made the improvements himself. He didn't because owning a professional football team is an ego play. It's also a capital gains play. You break even on the team's operations and then sell out when the value of the team doubles and you can pay the minium capital gains tax. He's a businessman. He took a risk. It looks like it might not have been worth it. "Capitalism", as they teach at the Stephen Ross School of Business on the campus of the University of Michigan, "can be a fickle bitch."

He should sell the team now because he is clearly clueless and continues to employ Jeff Ireland who is a failure as a GM. The #1 draft pick can't practice due to a shoulder injury/surgery they knew about. Ireland sold Ross on the pick.

Dolphins are losers, Ross lashing out at the Tallahassee crowd is infantile. He has had years to put a winning product on the field he has failed.
Parcells, Sparano, Brandon Marshall are all part of the company Ross thought would be a success.

Steve Ross and Jorge Perez. Best friends.
Jorge Perez buys the naming rights to the Miami Art Museum for $5 Million plus some overvalued "art". The taxpayers get stuck with the $500+ Mil bill and Perez gets the naming rights? Who will pay for the Miami Art Museum's $10+ Mil in annual operating losses?

the new logo really resembles the renovation deal a flopping dolphin...

Steve Ross, the billionaire, should spend his own money to improve his own property. Does he share his companies profits with the public? Why should the taxpayers pay to improve his property?

On May 5th Steve Ross tells the Miami Herald he will not spend any of his own money to improve Dolphins Stadium. Wow.

Voters were going to vote 70% to defeat the tax increase. Marlins hangover, baby... Why was Carlos Gimenez pandering to Steve Ross?
