Travel Time To Work By Commission District. By Geniusofdespair

I suggest you enlarge the graphic to view it.

22,813 of our residents travel 90 minutes or more for work. Another 87,390 spend 60 to 89 minutes traveling to their jobs. That is a crime. 26.1% of workers travel more than 40 minutes a day.

Remember that District 8 was Katy Sorenson (now Lynda Bell), District 9 is Dennis Moss, District 10 is Javier Souto, District 11 was Martinez (now Juan Zapata), District 12 is Pepe Diaz and District 13 is Steve Bovo. Sorenson and Moss voted to hold the UDB line consistently and they also have the highest percentage of people in the 60 to over 90 minute category. They were/are well aware of the impact of sprawl. If you increase the pool to drivers having to drive 60 minutes or more, Joe Martinez's District 11 is tops for longest commutes. He always voted to move the urban development boundary, he didn't give a damn about sprawl or its consequences. Lynda Bell, the District 8 Commissioner recently voted to remove a 30 year covenant barring residential on a property in Martinez's district (that was outside the UDB line but moved inside the line recently ONLY because the developers agreed to place a 30 year covenant on the property). Sorenson and Moss were not fooled by the covenant in the first place. They voted against the urban development boundary move even with the covenant. Moss also voted against lifting the covenant. You would have expected Bell to follow suit.

The is the price we have to pay in the Obama economy. There are now no jobs in our community so we must travel to work.

How's that hope and change working out for ya?

There were never enough jobs to support the sprawl Craig. They didn't disappear, they were never there. Sprawl...go look it up.

Yep Genius and I well remember when Hold the Line was formed and why! The Sun Sentinel was more interested in the craziness at the time than the Herald was. As mad as I was with Alvarez about the Marlin's nonsense he stood with us and vetoed the sprawl. I also well remembering how a simple drive started doubling and tripling in time as the sprawl started spreading like wild fire. I had to close my office and am still working out of my home because of the traffic problems.

So you need to travel to your job>? Boo hoo for you. Be lucky you have a job. I was laid off in 2010. I have applied for over 1,500 jobs. I have received about 10 interviews. No job offers. I have a bachelor's degree, an excellent employment history, and no criminal record. My crappy unemployment benefits (about $250 per week) run out at the end of the month. The Obama economy sucks.

Lady Di, sorry about your job situation and it's not too uncommon in this county as a whole because the BCC majority really doesn't care about the "little people" like you and I. We still have to pay one way or the other but have little say.

The issue here is the build it they will come mentality which started in the early 2000's in this county. Developers thought is way a great idea to build houses over cheap farm land and farmers were mad about nafta so they obliged.

In West Kendall/Redland/Homestead there is not a huge job base because again the BCC is concerned more about their re elections than the people. The majority allowed so much development without regard for the traffic affecting people already living in those areas. The CDD's created a bigger nightmare when homeowners were stuck with infrastructure bills (another story there).

In any event I do not have an employer and didn't have one when I moved down here ages ago. As a business owner it's been tough because relying on all locals doesn't afford me the best job applications and the job skills I need are on the other side of the county. So someone like me has to decide whether to relocate an entire business so I can get good workers versus just staying put and moving on......

It stinks both ways and the traffic issues are just a nightmare trying to get anywhere from let's say Cutler Bay north or vice versa! This affect everyone living south of that point. The same can apply for anyone west heading east as well.

Lady Di - I oft hear acquaintances complain about not being able to get a job. I look at them without a word. I would never hire them either. I recommend you go to a job counsler Lady Di. Maybe the chip on your shoulder is the problem and not your resume. You need an impartial person to evaluate your job seeking skills.
