Miami Dade Election Results ... by gimleteye

Notable results:

Ban pit bulls: yes.

Joe Martinez: no. (One member of the unreformable majority of the county commission removes himself. Who knows what the next one, will be.)

Alice Pena: no.

Bad results: There are some stinkers. What do you think?

The worst result: only 16 percent of registered voters participated in this election.

I support a law that would require all Miami-Dade businesses to shut down on election day. All those poll workers doing practically nothing: let them put an indelible stamp on people's fingernails who voted. If people have to vote, they might be compelled also to pay a little more attention. And if they would pay attention, they would be outraged. And if enough people are outraged, the pool of people who care about our government would widen and change might happen.

LATE NOTE: The Miami Herald reports that instead of nine votes on the plus side, that Unreformable Majority Member Bruno Barreiro "missed winning an outright majority by 11 votes". He will be forced into a November runoff with Luis Garcia. How sweet is that?

Down with the egg lady!

The power of the money behind the incumbents is overwhelming. Dennis Moss, Audrey Edmunson, Barbara Jordan, and the Maker of The Motion Bruno Barrerio voted to divert over $3 BILLION from the taxpayers to the Marlins. It is well over $3 BILLION when all the interest is included. Unfortunately, the majority of the voters do not understand.

Primaries should be October, runoffs in November. August has kids out of school, families on vacation, registered snowbirds are long gone.

16% is ridiculous.

I wonder what the King (Norman Braman) is doing tonight? He's the big loser tonight.

Lovin' Las Vegas Gimleteye...might stay and leave the Eye on Miami empire to you!

Speaking of losers how are you Cody?

WRONG GENIUS.
I propose we have a self appointed emperor (that would be me) and save all this election day cash so a Palace can be built for the Emperor the size of the Marlins Stadium.

This is America. You cannot force a person to vote. Anyway, what makes you think if they had a day off to vote they would go to the polls?

There is no way to make it any easier for the people to vote...we have done everything possible to give them the opportunity and they still ignore it...we gave them the absentee ballot and they found a way to steal those; we give them early voting and they still stay home. Does anyone really think these people care about voting?

The losers in all this are the people who don't have the brains to understand that when they don't vote they are charting their own pathetic lives, allowing corruption to fester and setting the worse possible example for their children.

Problem is they think they have stuck it to the politicians when in reality they have shot themselves in the foot.

That is why the elected officials have it made...They can stay in office for as long as they choose. Miami Dade will never rise to the level of a county with people who deserve to have the opportunity to vote.

They simply have no civic pride....worse, they are brain dead.

If a person tells me they don't vote...for any reason...do you know where I place them? In the gutter where they belong.

And when they do vote look who they vote for.

Will somebody please explain to me why anyone in their right mind would vote for the likes of a Daphne Campbell or an Eric Fresen?

And what does it say for Miami Dade County where so many fools live?

I am delighted that Jose Javier Rodriguez won the primary in state house District 112. He will bring a breath of fresh air to politics and gives me hope about new young leaders. He now takes on Alex de la Portilla (R).
Very sad Kristin Jacobs did not win her Congressional primary, she is a champion for the environment.

Jose javier won primaries by less than 610 votes. With the amount of money Jose Javier had, he should of BLOWN right by Alex Dominguez. Jose Javier is lucky Alex didn't have extra money or big time special interest behind him. It would of been a COMPLETELY different outcome.

Jose Javier loses in November against DLP. He doesn't have the guidance, no AB campaign, he's a sitting duck.

Tonight's big losers: Norman Braman and Lynda Bell. Norman, think twice before you decide to take on the leaders of the Black community again with your big white money.

Bell put Alice Pena against Moss; another big mistake. Another South Dade smack down. Bell we're wise to you. we'll be watching you come November.

Miami has early voting and absantee voting so closing any business on voting day makes no sense.

The old Cuban guard votes while the vast majority of non Cuban Hispanics and the Black community are pure political apathy .

Whether they have the day off or not they will not vote ,esp the under 50 yrs old bunch.

If Cubans were 10% of the population they would still run Miami and I say this with respect as they vote, just that simple.

Non Cubans as a whole politically disgust me.

Last spring I was in India during Congressional elections. The remedy I propose is from watching a day when 60, 70, 80 percent of the electorate voted. Now they all might have voted for idiots or criminals; but I did witness a day when the entire region shut down, businesses closed, and the general public acted as though the day involved the obligation of going to the polls.

Poor Alice Pena. Are you feeling down this morning? Next time you step up with a plan to commandeer a county commission agenda, I hope not even the lowliest county commission staffer gives you the time of day. Tell her to hold her "hearing" on the ground floor in the atrium by the Metro Rail station.

Bye Joe. It's been a good ride, hasn't it? At least you have a house from Lennar and Charlie to show for your work. Turn in your keys at the mayor's office.

My stinker result: Bruno Barreiro avoiding a runoff by only nine votes. I'm guessing that if illegal absentee voting practices had been scrutinized in that district, that margin would have vanished.

As a democrat and activist in my neighborhood of The roads area it was nice to finally see a nice clean race for the Dem seat in 112. Congratulations to Jose Javier Rodriguez for his victory and Alex Dominguez for his very gentleman like campaign. These 2 democrats are the future of our party and we now have to rally behind Jose to defeat the incumbent Alex De La Portilla at all costs. Congratulations again to both of you!!

Anonymous said...

I agree , good luck Jose!

Anonymous said...

Come on Gimel, Braman should have picked a new face to run against Barreiro. Luis Garcia was a bad choice.

Anonymous said...

As someone mentioned in this blog a while ago, the democrats should not have had Dominguez square off with Rodriguez. One of them should have run against Barreiro instead of each other. Now Bruno beats Garcia and De la Portilla beats Ro driguez and we are back to square one. Our democratic leadership in Dade County is horrible. I agree with Anom above, these 2 guys are our best hope going forward!

Ross Hancock said...

To the anon about Jose Javier's spending...he raised a lot but didn't spend much more than Dominguez did on this primary. I would say he spent just enough to ensure the margin of victory he got, and still has a good amount on hand to build on for the general. It's a big mistake to say his campaign is not being well-run.

Judy said...

To Ross, I volunteered on Alex's campaign. Rodriguez had over 15,000 in in kind contributions. From the Democratic party in Tallahassee. Alex received 0 support as he was not the " establishment candidate". Alex also received more AB ballots in the race than did Jose. Jose wil have to be much better organized against DLP if he wants to win. All things considered Alex Dominguez did much much better with fewer resources. He did not accept special interest money and ran an honest and effective campaign. I hope Jose beats DLP . I am a democrat and no mater what I support Jose in that race. But to say his campaign was well run is crazy. He won by barely 600 votes with a huge war chest. The democratic party should support both candidates instead of choosing sides in a primary. This is were republicans do a much better job of supporting their group of candidates and it shows in Dade county . Good luck Jose and you better win the AB war against DLP.

Anonymous said...

Can't believe Bruno won. Horrible.

Ross said...

Judy, Dominguez ran a great campaign as well and I was just correcting the misleading statement above. Now it's time to unite.

Anonymous said...

Bruno gets money to do whatever the lobbyists want. He delivers, and to think only 9 votes separated him from spending more of the lobbyists' money. Sick.

Egg Lady can add another noteworthy accomplishment to her resume:

LOSER!

Ah, hahaha!

Anonymous said...

Fernandez-Rundle, Barreiro, Fresen ... business as ususal. We only have ourselves to blame.

James Humble is consoling the egg lady. Awww. So cute!

Alex Dominguez said...

I want I to take this opportunity to congratulate Jose Javier Rodriguez for winning our primary yesterday. It was a hard fought and VERY close election. Both our campaigns showed lots of class and avoided the mudslinging which unfortunately have become the norm in our elections in Miami. I want to thank all my supporters and volunteers for all the support they gave during my campaign. Now it's time to give all our support and rally behind Jose so he can win our Democratic seat in November. Let's do all we can this election to support all our Dem candidates as well. (hancock and Solomon). Best of luck to everybody and remember to exercise yours right to vote!

News:
Late Tuesday night, it had appeared Barreiro had won reelection by a razor-thin nine votes over the majority needed to avoid a runoff. On Wednesday, an updated count showed Barreiro with 49.94 percent of the vote.

But the tally — and a runoff election — will not be certain until after the elections department counts provisional ballots — those cast by voters who didn’t have photo identification on Election Day. Provisional ballots are checked by the elections department’s canvassing board to see if the signatures match those in the department’s database.

Can it be true? Barreiro in a run-off? Yippee! Aye! Essa!

It does make you wonder, what was the egg lady all about? Moss still got the money from the usual suspects, didn't he? Did the bad guys just float Pena out there, to create enough of a stir to knee cap DERM? Was the plan to give Moss cover, for letting them get their way? Moss has always been something of a double agent, hide in the dark of night notwithstanding Katy Sorenson's support. Didn't he side with Pepe Diaz and blast the citizens who tried to incorporate Redland and stop the big development plans out west? I'm not sure anyone knows Dennis Moss' mind, but the margin of victory tells me something is up. If Moss really regrets not standing up tighter with Katy Sorenson against the unreformable majority, let's see him stake out some positions against the tea party wackos who support Bell and the egg lady. I wonder, though, if that is really going to happen. ... something stinks here.

To the commenter on Fresen, when the official district turnout results are available on Friday, I'll show that Fresen's win was far from being a mandate from his party members. Plus he's had to spend about $25 a vote so far, and that's simply not sustainable.

Anonymous said...

Republicans AND Democrats should unite to vote Fresen out in November. Please. And the Miami Herald better not endorse him again, either. Geez, did the editorial board members bother to read their own paper's story on his finances? Or the charter schools series? Geez.

Anonymous said...

Who handled the absentee ballots for Lopez-Cantera? Apparently, his opponent won the election day and advance voting but lost on the absentees.

Dave said...

On that 16% turnout statistic, it is even worse when you factor in the fact that fewer than half of Miami-Dade residents are even registered to vote. Only about 7% of Miami-Dade residents voted. When such a small percentage of the population makes the decisions for everyone else, is it even still a Democracy?

Anonymous said...

Poor Joe Martinez. Think of the vanity that lead him to imagine "the people" wanted him to be mayor. Maybe the Marlins have a job for Joe in the ticket office.

You know who said...

Genius: Why do you strike comments that use your real name? Just curious.

Lopez Cantera showed up on the stage last night with Gimenez after he spoke. Who else joined them on stage? David Rivera!

Ok lets build the perfect candidate to get rid of all the incumbent losers. From what I have read about everyone on this blog and others this is what I come up with:

1)Fundraising skills of Jose Rodriguez

2)AB and street campaigning skills of Alex Dominguez

3) Optimism of Ross Hancock

4) Persistence of Joe Garcia

5) Speaking skills of Barack Obama

6)a last name that sounds cuban

7) and the kiss of death "a Miami Herald endorsement"

thats funnt , you forgot the sense of humor of Ron Paul. Imagine Ron running a race here in Miami. How fun would that be.

If you offer voters something for "free" other than their freedom in this country and freedom to vote you will probably get a bigger turn out.

We've become a nation of "what will I get for it". Very sad!

Everybody should be requied to listen to Don Henly of the Eagles sing "Get OVer It".

me think you should put your name on the ballot, so all the anon can rag on you and distort you.
