Can Annette Taddeo Trounce David Rivera? by Geniusofdespair

Michael Froomkin of Discourse.net mentioned that Annette Taddeo might jump in to challenge "creepy member of Congress" (his words) David Rivera. Another name that has surfaced is State Rep. Luis Garcia, the retired Miami Beach fire chief (pictured).

Anyone breathing, or not, would be better than David Rivera. I wonder if Luther Campbell would move into the district? I will say it here: Julio Robaina would even be better than David Rivera.

There isn't anyone that could beat him right now. Diaz Balart is actually more beatable than Rivera.

I know it sounds strange, and you might think I'm nuts, but it's true.

Unless legal troubles remove him from office, he's there to stay. Because he's not beatable by any of the people you mentioned at the ballot box.

Annette Taddeo has lost twice already. In her first campaign she ran on a platform of raising taxes. She saw how that worked out.

Luis Garcia is well liked and experienced.

I'm not sure how you can say he is hard to beat right now. Unless your a democrat. However, in a republican primary he is very vulnerable.

His constituency doesn't know him at all, and his recent negative press has left him exposed.

Give me a charismatic candidate and half a million dollars and I'll leave him collecting unemployment.

It depends, in part, on how the district looks. Let's see how the Legislature uses Amendment 6. My guess is that he will still be in a majority Republican district that is even stronger than his present District. If so, he's safe for a decade.

Luis Garcia would definitely be the stronger Democratic nominee with the best shot of beating Rivera.

Wishful thinking! With Obama heading the ticket in 2012, you need to brace yourself for another Republican landslide.

David is SAFE...he will raise two million dollars...he will have his friends in Tally draw a very favorable District...he will crush any primary opponent in a late Aug. Primary on AB's alone...and then he will beat any DEM who runs against him in a short 8 week campaign leading up to the Nov. election. He will also have the good luck to run when Obama is on the top of the ticket...bad news for the DEM candidate. Bottom-line he may not be liked but he must be respected for never losing an election in his life. BTW I live in Fort Lauderdale and do not have ties to him...but I am a political observer and have seen the DEM's try and win that seat for the last six years to no avail. I would say the DEM's should concentrate their resources on beating a weak candidate like Alan West. But 2012 will be a tough year for the DEM's in general if Obama does not lower the national unemployment numbers...and quick.

I was the second anon (who said he was un-beatable right now".

The last anon knows what he/she is talking about.

Regardless of how you may feel about this guy personally, he is not an easy target, and IS virtually unbeatable unless you;re from the "Mas" family and want to spend #2 to #3 million "of your own money" to beat him. And even then, it's a coin toss.

Luis Garcia, what a joke, you mean the guy the FL Democratic party has had to raise every penny for? LOL!

David Riveria is still under investigation for many offenses isn't he? I read about multiple election fraud scams and odd relationships with casinos?

Maybe he will get indicted and removed?

Well it sounds based on some of the comments like Garcia is afraid of Taddeo, or else why would they say something so outrageous like her campaign was about raising taxes. I was a volunteer for her campaign and she was at times too middle of the road for me, you know, with her business background and her chair of I don't know how many chambers. But That probably is why she would be very good to beat Rivera, in a year when the economy is going to be the main issue. How many jobs has Garcia created? I think they will just talk about the pensions Garcia has. Besides, Garcia is from the beach, what do the people in Kendall, the redlands and homestead know about him? Nothing. Oh, wait, he does have the same last name as Joe Garcia. But is that good?

Annette Taddeo's biggest problem is that both times she has tried to win without an absentee ballot broker or "boletero". Let's hope she's learned her lesson on how elections really work in Miami! Her party used her in the first election and Steve Marin used her in the second.

Taddeo has the best chance of taking back this seat. The district is trending non-Cuban Hispanic and women voters out number the men by 10%. There is also the fact that Luis Garcia was on the steering committee of Democrats for Jeb Bush AND he supported the corrupt Julio Robaina in the County Mayor’s race. He also has no name recognition in 25, his power base is Miami Beach, at least the voters have heard of Taddeo. See Caliz Political Report.

It irks me when someone posts TWO links to another blog. I don't like links to other blogs as a rule and remove them. Send them to my email so I can check them out first. I don't like you sending our readers to your ads...

Luis Garcia is one of the best statesmen we have in Tallahassee. With age comes wisdom. We are suffering in Florida as a result of entrusting our privileged youth with the responsibility of setting policy without having any life experience to draw upon. Luis Garcia has lived a life full of triumph and tragedy. He has earned the right to be carefully considered for Congress. I hope he puts himself forward as a candidate.

Taddeo needs to get in the trenches now and learn the issues. She seems like a good person, but she needs to really connect with constituents - NOW. She needs to be out at all community meetings she can possibly go to - listening.

I know a candidate for Congress does not have to live in the district, but Garcia jumping from the Beach to West Kendall is really too far. ATaddeo couldn't even make the runoff for BCC. Even with amendments 5 & 6 in effect, Rivera will come out with a more solidified Republican district, since protecting Hispanic voters' preference is a federal legal requirement for redistricting. And Rivera seems to be the Hispanic voters' preference. His district is over-populated, so watch for the GOP Legislature to carve off the Democratic precincts to help save his scandal-ridden hide.

David Rivera is a demagogue, mean spirited and the only thing that's protecting him is that he knows where ALL of Marco Rubio's skeletons are buried. He will raise $2-$3 million to defend his empire, and will cash in every IOU in Tally he can. Anitere Flores is salivating at the thought of running against him and will do everything in her power to draw an unfavorable district for him, and one she can win. David is not dumb, but Anitere is not the brightest crayon in the box. She has the boleteras down packed and so does David. Rick Scott and the horrible bills she's supported - the woman is OBSESSED with abortion. Doesn't she have another right to suppress than that one???!! how un-original! - will hinder her, but she could give Rivera a run for his money.

On the other side of the aisle, Luis Garcia is a great guy but he can't raise money, he's not charismatic, has a hard time putting his thoughts in order, and had not done much in Tally. If Annette runs, she will win the primary handily.

then it will be Taddeo vs Rivera, both well funded, she pro-business, non-Cuban Hispanic woman, or Taddeo vs Flores, a pro-choice moderate business woman vs an obsessed not-so-bright demagogue who sponsored an anti-immigrant bill in Tally! They can't pull enough Republican Cuban voters into that district to make up for the loss of Collier Republicans without eliminating Mario's district, and he won't put up with that.

I definitely think Annette Taddeo can win it, and you Republicans can stop dreaming about an Obama loss. Puleeez! The man stopped this country from sliding into a Depression, killed Bin Laden, and brought back our troops from Iraq and is drawing down the troops in Afghanistan.

Don't think Anitere is the only Republican looking at the viability of challenging Rivera. Carlos Curbelo, Alex Villalobos and Alex Diaz de la Portilla can all jump into a power play. An expensive primary battle would benefit Taddeo who will give any of them a run for their money. 2012 could be her year.

What gives taddeo a chance? Having lost twice makes her a viable opponent. The only way David doesn't hold on to that seat is, if he's removed. At that point anitere would be the front runner!
