Another Bad Deal for Miami. By Geniusofdespair

The Marlin's deal was not our first giveaway to a sports team. Miami Today had an article in their December 29th edition about another of Miami's bad deals. Nothing like ripping off scabs is there Miami Today?

The Miami Heat basketball team, in a 1997 agreement with the County, agreed to pay 40% of their profit above $14 million to the County. Well guess what, the Miami Heat since 1997 has NEVER paid the County a penny, claiming they never made over $14 million. That's rich. To compound how bad a deal we made with the Heat owner -- in addition, "the county pays  a $6.4 million annual subsidy to Basketball Properties (Micky Arison)" according to Miami Today.  Even though they made $60.6 million in 2011 they claim they had $47.4 million in expenses. That brings them JUST UNDER the $14 million. The paper says they have a $12.07 million line item for 'depreciation and amortization' but it doesn't specify for what.

Remember people, we own the land and we own the Arena and we get nothing out of it, in fact we pay our hard earned tax dollars to Arison's Corporation every year. We even gave them naming rights. We did all this for billionaire, Micky Arison.

Carlos Gimenez: Give this deal another look for us taxpayers because this sucks big time.  All the County Commissioners at the time should have been recalled over the Heat giveaway deal.

Section 3. This Board hereby approves the conveyance to BPL of certain Arena Naming Rights in consideration for a reduction of the County's annual payment obligations to BPL under the Arena Agreements, in accordance with the provisions of Composite Amendment One and subject to the prior fulfillment of the Conditions Precedent.   (from the legislation)

Why do we let sports teams write our contracts and why don't we learn from history? Miami Dade County is run by morons and they hire moron lawyers to protect us, the  taxpayers. The sports teams tell us to bend over and our politicians say in response: How far?

I beg to differ with you on who the morons are. The morons are the voters who keep these people in office. They are very smart and hire very smart lawyers to keep them ripping off the taxpayer and the money rolling in.

Grillo the money isn't rolling in to the county...except maybe into our elected's pockets. I stand corrected the voters are indeed stupid but I blame the voters who don't vote-- about 85% of registered voters. They let absentee ballots determine our politicians by not voting. Low turnout helps absentees.

You might consider trying to get a list of all the folks who the Heat gives free tickets to every year.

More incompetence by the overpaid lazy staff in the County Attorney's Office.

I think I'm moving to Broward where they at least arrest and prosecute corruption! Oh, wait. I can't do that because our BCC, approving every single family development has helped devalue my home so much, I wouldn't be able to get enough to pay off the mortgage, which was taken out in 2000, after putting 20 percent down! Oh, this town SUCKS!

Grillo, you are so correct! Unless these cowardly voters step up and be counted, how do they expect to change the status quo?

The same way it is done every time. By the meager numbers of those of us who have the guts to be counted. The others sit in the background and complain while sitting in their air-conditioned houses looking at their oversized TV or outside in their swimming pools, while fools like us do their dirty work!

The voters in Miami-Dade County should be ashamed, always complaining but never owning up to their part into the destruction of our communities.

They are a sorry bunch!

Imagine you are the boss and you sit down with your accountant a month before the end of your fiscal year. Accountant says, "looks like we will make $15 million this year." You say "I'm taking a $1 million raise."
Profit is now down below $14 million and we the people are screwed again. That's how it works.

Let me tell you the county attorneys office does not mind going after tax payers in lawsuits... They squeeze every dime they can out of workmans comp claim payments ..even when someone has almost lost their life and is permanently disfigured/disabled through no fault of their own while doing a job for the county? How about making the employee pay half of their medical bills for that injury and any resulting complications?

Too bad they don't care more about the folks they hire and/or the $$ of those of us who pay taxes...

Hey, Micky,

I'll give you a pass on the payments to the County, but how about all those soccer fields that you promised in those slick commercials?

The Heat and it's salesmen promised soccer fields on Parcel B, the waterfront vacant lot. Instead the multi-millionaires who work for the Heat park there.

Genius - do they count the revenues from the oversize-illegal-digital billboard at the front of the AAA?
Or is that another "separate" corporation that hides those profits...?

The revenues from the illegal LED billboard facing US 1 AKA Biscayne Blvd are large and they go to the Heat. Total profits still are less than $14 mil. The Heat have no intention of ever paying the County for use of the County land.
