Voter Alert! Vote NO on the local Miami Dade Charter Amendment. By Geniusofdespair

Keeping the commissioners from talking directly to staff is a GOOD thing. They tend to browbeat staff (think of getting stuck in Vile Natacha's Seijas' office for an hour of lecturing). The Miami-Dade Home Rule Charter affords staff a little protection by requiring the commissioners to communicate through the Mayor's office. This amendment is a commission POWER GRAB trying to gut the charter provision!! Vote NO on the Miami Dade Home Rule Charter question!! Send this post link to your friends! This is a link to our endorsements for this election.

I would have voted the wrong. The thought of being stuck listening to Souto or Sejas brings new meaning. We shouldn't vote to torture people.

I meant to say "wrong way" in the prior post.

Sorry, but I strongly disagree with you genius. As a current elected official, subject to the sunshine law, it is very difficult to get at the truth if you cannot speak to staff and get data to back up recommendations. If commissioners have to rely on the mayor, or manager, they can easily be misled and manipulated. The best decisions can only be made when you have all the facts. Just because you pity staff who have to be subjected to a tirade by a bully, that shouldn't outweigh the critical importance of assuring that a policy maker gets to know all that they need to know to make an informed decision.

The county is a different animal. This is only for the county. I have seen Burgess and Angela Gittens humiliated can you imagine what they would do to lower level staff. No with this bunch it would never work.

Absolutely, Genius. Staff is intimidated enough as it is. THink of it, one of those commissioners will probably be mayor. Nobody wants to get fired in their first month of the new regime.

Lerner is wrong. Souto wants everyone to stop what they are doing to attend to issues in his district. If he call in a staff member they can't refuse and must listen to his monologues forever. They will be put upon to fill his requests, the Mayors staff puts him in his place.

I work for the county. If I had to meet with some of the county commissioner I would go loco. Trust me, the way it runs now is much better, we can do our job without extra intimidation.

Mayor Lerner is wrong once again.

She is cover by the "sunshine law" with her fellow commissioners in the Village of Pinecrest, but the County Mayor can communicate with any Commissioner.

We have an strong Mayor office. Staff is accountable to the Mayor office.

The County Commission needs to stick to policy making and keeping the Mayor’s office accountable to policy direction.

Genius you are correct this is a power grab by the county commission that cannot get anything right.

News flash: Department Directors and county staff routinely meet with, speak with and respond to County Commissioners directly. The executive office is informed of these communications after the fact, but the Mayor / Manager does not have time to be the only means of channeling information to the governing board. This change only memoralizes the status quo.

Because they are doing it now under the radar doesn't make it right. This is a power grab. Vote 'no'.
