There was good reason for Floridians to oppose drilling for offshore oil, off Florida's coasts. Remember? For decades, opposition to offshore drilling was a bedrock principle of Florida politics. As much as the oil companies tried, Floridians wouldn't budge. What changed?
"Drill, baby, drill" entered the lexicon with Sarah Palin in the 2008 election. Democrats, who had to cut a deal with the oil industry in order to get climate change legislation onto the GOP table, triangulated towards the position they had steadfastly opposed.
In 2008 "drill, baby, drill" also was tinged with bitterness because of the collapse of the housing economy and debt machine. "Drill, baby, drill": as though more oil could get the sheetrock, two by fours, and personal lines of credit flying off the supplier shelves again. "Drill, baby, drill": do something now to get the mojo back. It was woven, craftily by oil companies, into the values of voters.
So now we are where we are, understanding why Florida opposed offshore oil drilling for so long. Conservative values begin with protecting what we treasure. Who do you trust to protect our coastlines from what happens a mile under the Gulf of Mexico?

I hope the oil washes up on the shores of the homes of rich Republicans. The ones who want to drill here and drill now!
I think we should collect buckets of the goop and ship it to those that want to drill. Along with a bird or two covered in oil.
I feel horrible that Louisiana is facing this mess. But, it looks like we could be close behind.
I am also sorry for the families who have suffered the loss of a loved one here and with coal. It is all too tragic.
That being said, what if one of our nuclear power plants burps... isn't that going to be a massive job that can't be cleaned up?
I think we ought to employ NASA to create a "inner space" approach to oil rig safety. They were talking about the giant cone that would be placed over the oil where the natural hydrology of the event would funnel the oil up where they could siphon it off and even use the oil. Think about what the engineers at NASA have been able to do on Hubble and on space station. I thin Obama should get right on it.
BP could pay the bill. It could be our own jobs program - keeping those guys at work in central Florida.
when things are good and NIMBY, we get very conservative.
I guess the fishing industry goes out of business in Florida. We will have to depend on the NE for fish. Well, I better go out now and load my freezer with various seafood. Many won't be available, and what is available will cost a fortune.
RE: 1st hurricane in Gulf oil spill: Imagine coating the coastal houses and forests with a slick of water and oil and then add lightning.
Two things will make great business just now: Pond raising prawns and solar panels. I am worried about what the first hurricane passing thru the Gulf spill is going to do: Coat the coastal homes and forests with a sheen of volatile oily water and then... add lightning.
I'd like to stick and oil derek in Sarah Palin's cavalier mouth...
