Joe Martinez: He wants to be Mayor? By Geniusofdespair
This was County Commissioner Joe Martinez speaking, Nov. 4th, about moving the Urban Development Boundary for the Ferro application I wrote about yesterday. Notice he gets off the dais and speaks in the pit in favor of a private development. The audacity of him openly advocating for a private development should not escape anyone. Listen to him speak over and over about HIS DISTRICT, Joe Martinez couldn't care less about the rest of the County. He discounts all the speakers and the county's planning department that urged the Commissioners to hold the line. Commissioner Martinez says the people who shaped the UDB line were drunk and the State Agency DCA is irrelevant (because we have a home rule charter). He even takes a swipe at the Governor for the Cabinet's finding against the Lowe's big box store (last time the Commission voted to move the UDB for a store). Etch these video in your memory and when he runs for something else, because he will, you will remember that he didn't earn your vote. He apparently cares more about his district and moving the line for Mr. Ferro - the guy with the property OUTSIDE the UDB line. Warning: If you watch these 2 videos you will HATE this guy. Ick.
P.S. You might call and tell him that the reason his district has the least business property is because it has sprawled out and that every district has more of some things and less of other things. You could also mention, in regard to the 'hardship' he cited for his district of a deficit of stores, that the last thing Miami Dade needs is more retail stores - ANYWHERE.

So many things to dislike. Lets start with the fact that he doesnt make ONE intelligent comment.
Thank you god - I listened to the videos on my phone - could hardly see them - but that was enough. He sounded dismissive and over bearing. Why would the voters vote for him?
The Man is Ignorant.
To al of the voters, I apologize for my organization ever having supported him and the others. He is against raising taxes for increased services, yet look at the cost of goverment to provide uniformed levels of service far away from the center core. I will not hold another sign or work a campaign for him.
I watched that hearing and it was an unbelievable show of ignorance and disregard to the people of the community and the DCA. He was grand standing beyond belief. I didn't even know this kind of stuff was allowed at the BCC, but I guess it is.
Shame on Joe and I hope he really doesn't plan on running for the County Mayor. It will be ugly for him and I'm sure he'll make it ugly for others.
We don't need anymore like him in County government.
The man is delusional, as are the members of his
District who support him. He is self-serving and has
no feel for the unique nature and limitations of the land on which we live; he would pave over the whole county. And he wants to be Mayor? What a disaster that would be. The book on paving over Florida was written about him and his like. If he become Mayor, Hugo Chavez of Venezula would be his model. God help
For all of you concerned about the DCA, you do know that the Legislature is acting right now to get rid of it, don't you? Send your objections to the Dade delegation. Please! As for Joe, he's hopeless. Not fit to represent anyone.
Cleveland used to have an East Side and a West Side. Now, thanks to uncontrolled sprawl it has a "South Side"—though no one calls it that because it's too characterless to have an actual name. When Cleveland sprouted all that sprawl to the south, the metropolitan area grew to 150% of the old Cleveland—while the population actually DROPPED 2%!
The folks on the "South Side" of Cleveland MIGHT be happy with having an office park just minutes away [by car, of course—there's no walking], but they are NOT happy that Cleveland's center city, and therefore its entire economy, is in a shambles. Whether they realize it or not, Cleveland's rotten core, with empty factories, empty lots where crack houses were bulldozed, and YES, even empty office space, is exacerbated by uncontrolled sprawl at the edge of the city.
All the residents of Cleveland, including the ones to the south, would have been better served by development redirected toward the east and west transit lines, repurposing factories as loft space and office, for instance.
The Miami-Dade County Commission needs to understand that what happens at the outskirts of a city can affect its core, as much as a wound in your foot can kill you.
We need to stop wasting our time with UDB fights and start creating a healthy Miami-Dade, with redevelopment at the core and green countryside at the edge. If any of Commissioner Martinez' constituents want to live in Phoenix, or even Cleveland, they can move there. Miami-Dade County HAS an Urban Development Boundary. Let's treat it like one.
Arrogant and dangerous. It is one thing to represent your district and be able to look at the big picture as well (e.g. Katy Sorenson)-- it is another to pander to developers who are not doing your district any good - and ignore the big picture. Ambitious, arrogant and willing to simply ignore county staff and DCA objections? I can't think of anything that would make a person less qualified to be Mayor. Let's hope he keeps saying stupid things on the record and the voters - in his current district and around the county - catch on.
If this is how they behave lets get rid of the home rule charter.
This is an example of what is wrong with having a county government with commissioners elected by district. They should be elected at large so they can act appropriately to protect our collective interest, not the interest of some developer. Shame on you Commissioner!
Martinez is proof the Elections Department should require proof from every candiate that they meet a minimum IQ score. I think if a score of 60 was the minimum threshold Martinez's application would have been denied.
Does Martinez make the taxpayers give him any staffers? Who does his research?
If you're ever bored and in need of fascinating, revealing reading material, visit the county elections website and take a look at the companies and individuals who funded Martinez' 2008 re-election campaign. If you're really motivated, look into the owners of these companies and then connect the dots in a game of follow the money.
He isn't stupid reader above but the lobbyists supply the info
Did this guy finish high school? He rambles on and on without clearly making his point. Just another example of a politician in bed with the L.B.A.
Where is the FBI when you need em.
Wow. So there's no pressure to extend the UDB except to build strip malls for tax write offs or money makers for developers. We've got empty condos downtown and empty condos in east kendall across from Dadeland. Too bad we don't have a politician with the chutzpah to stand up and say "We're not growing so we don't need to extend the UDB to create ghost towns 2 miles from Everglades National Park. I watched Joe making a desperate sounding attempt to convince his audience that District 11 is under-developed. I wish Ted Turner would buy in South Dade like he's been buying up land to save "the American West."
I wonder how many people leave MD county every day or hour or minute. That would be a great demo, have people walk out of the hearing on the UDB with signs saying I represent x number of people who are moving out of MDC each hour. Even the Cubans are leaving. A Cuban American friend of mine said a lot of his relatives have moved to Orlando. His kids have left or are actively looking for jobs elsewhere.
Duh!
Kathy
i was going to send Joe an email to show my displeasure, but he , like Nastyasia , dont believe in hearing from constituents...
True. Joe Martinez's "talking points" are prepared for him by lobbyists.
The County is is sad shape with idiots like Martinez voting on our futures.
Martinez is still drunk with power and his sly asides are insulting.
In video one Martinez is referring to what a speaker said, that there were already many Publix Supermarkets in the area, and the speaker named a few. Martinez in a sarcastic comeback named one they missed, to try to show her how unimportant her research was to his decision, there could be 20 Publix supermarkets in the areas but it wasn't going to change his decision. He doesn't like being TOLD what to do, even if it is right.
Pompous little twit isn't he?
Remember that free house that he got from developers? Did you ever think that maybe it wasn't free and he has to take these ridiculous positions as his part of the bargain?
In speaking about the UDB as a line drawn by a drunk, Martinez once again shows his ignorance. He seems to forget - if he ever understood in the first place - that our illogical UDB was not drawn by the Planning Dept., but by generations of County Commissioners who, like Martinez, never saw a boundary change that they didn't like.
What a petty character!
He insults State DCA staff and County Planning staff, all the while shirking his duty and passing the buck to State DCA.
He looks lazy and cowardly to me.
