Who is Running for the Sorenson Seat and Who is Giving to Pepe Diaz? By Geniusofdespair

So far, Carlos Pereira, Pam Gray and Eugene Flinn have filed papers to run for the District 8 seat. Albert Harum-Alvarez has not filed but he has confirmed he will be filing papers soon.

Now the fun part, trying to raise money for the campaign.

In District 12, Commissioner Jose 'Pepe' Diaz now has a challenger, her name is Heather Pernas. Here are some of the $500 contributors to Pepe's campaign. At a reader's suggestion I am including this on the barf-o-meter (he has raised almost $88,000):

Century Partners Group
Raul Rodriguez
Rayni Properties, LLC
Raul F Rodriguez, Jr.

Nidia M Rodriguez

Julie De Grandy-Cancio

Flinn's a busy guy. Running for Sorenson's BCC seat in addition to running for District 117 State Representative seat. Can he legally run for both seats?

I like Pam Gray, she always votes the right way as a member of the M-D County Planning Board. Wasn't she appointed to that board by Sorenson? In reply to last anon, Flinn's sleazy - a charter member of the "Power Broker's Club", which was responsible for the latest improvements to SW 144th Street. Ick!

The Barf-o-Meter on the Diaz contribution list is off the charts.

Dade County Farm Bureau for Pepe Diaz? Wow, that's interesting considering the newly democratic SR candidate Katie (pave all the way to the Everglades) Edwards! I thought they were "reformed", guess not! This is just enlightening.

If you write about candidates "sleazy" is not enough. Tell why -- what the candidate did that made you unhappy. This isn't a place to just dump on candidates to help YOUR candidate. I would like to see substance. In fact stay away from the word sleazy. Does the candidate not listen to the people, are they not smart....an example why.

Flinn knows a great deal about the County Commission and the Florida Legislature from fighting against the "mitigation fees" issue, where newly created cities had to pay millions in tribute to the County for the priviledge of incorporation. He was a tireless champion to kill those fees, and eventualy succeeded.
I never heard of the three others. Who are they and what have they done?

Don't know Carlos but the other two Pam and Albert are worthy candidates. Albert worked on Kendal issues, was a champion of the Dice House historic renovation and has been on the Board of the Urban Environment League for at least a decade. Pam was a founder of Redland's Edge, she was a champion for Hold The Line and she is a member of the Miami Dade County Planning Advisory Board, might be the Chairwoman.

Mayor Eugene Flinn has withdrawn from the state house race. As to the sleazy comment, you should provide more information as to the facts leading to your slur. I have known him for a long time and have never seen or heard of any action taken by Eugene Flinn that would warrant your slur.
There are rumors that the Latin Builders Association will promote someone to run who favors moving the UDB line and just about everything that Katy Sorenson was against with support of the 7 County Commissioners who already are in the pockets of the LBA. Scary huh?

Let's unite as citizens and voters. We need to have a large group that the local government will listen to.

Anybody hear rumblings of Ms. Greer jumping in?

Evelyn Greer does not live in the district.

I'm tempted to move to vote for Pam Gray after seeing her take lobbyists to task during the Planning Advisory Board hearings. I'll definitely be sending $ her way.

Parrera is the builders' candidate. He was planning to run against Sorenson before she announced that she would not seek another term.

Rumor at the time was that he had "money" behind him. Watch his list of contributors. It will be way more important than anything he says publicly.

The rest of the field is pretty good. It is good to see a bunch of community activists that have fought against developers and been supportive of the environment get into the race.

Is Perera the guy with the green house across from the Dice house?

No, Albert Harum-Alvarez designed and built an exemplary green house which is located a couple of blocks away from the Dice House.

No, that's Albert Harum-Alvarez who designed and built an exemplary green house, which is a couple of blocks north of the Dice House.

Tour Albert's house next Saturday the 27th. Gotta RSVP at info@smallco.net. Last month's FPL bill was $40 for a big family, home office and pool. Nothing fancy, no expensive gadgets, just good design.
