More Than Thirty Cuban Migrants Land at a Nuclear Plant Site. Finally Call Security After 8 Hours! By Geniusofdespair
Thirty people plus from a foreign country come ashore at Turkey Point Nuclear Reactor site and THEY finally had to call security, after having been there approximately 8 hours, never having been detected by a single nuke plant guard. Does that blow you away?
This is where they want to put 2 more reactors, the most nuclear power reactors in the entire nation? Isn't this suppose to be a highly guarded area? The same Turkey Point where someone was able to drill a hole in a critical pipe that cost 6 million dollars (aside: the utility wanted the rate-payers to shoulder the cost)? Also isn't this the same nuclear plant where guards were caught sleeping numerous times over a period of years (see NRC Letter)?
What is wrong with the nation? This is the worst possible place for 4 reactors! It is Miami, don't we all know Miami, where shit happens!
The NRC Report: "At 1328 [EST] on 11/26/09, the Turkey Point Nuclear Power Station Control Room received a call from an individual stating that he was a member of a group of Cuban nationals that had landed in the Turkey Point cooling canals. The individual reported that 33 Cuban nationals total (29 adults and 4 children) were in the cooling canal system. The Turkey Point Nuclear control room notified Turkey Point Nuclear Security, who located and assumed control over the Cuban nationals without incident. Turkey Point Nuclear Security notified local law enforcement agency (Miami-Dade Police), requesting assistance. At 1425 [EST], Miami-Dade Police arrived on site. United States Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) were notified by Miami-Dade Police.
"This event is being reported under 10CFR50.72(b)(2)(xi), for an event requiring notification to a government agency."

FPL willfully proves once again they are incapable of protecting their plants. The NRC should take over the security by using National Guard and get the profit maker out of the security business.
Make them pay through their profits for military security. NO PSC HIKES!!! They blew it, again.
Calm down and read the article please. They landed 6 miles away in the swamps. This quote seems a little deceptive to me: "Thirty people plus from a foreign country come ashore at Turkey Point Nuclear Reactor site"
it is in restricted area nonetheless, suppose to have been guarded. This area was suppose to be secure...they could have walked closer, and we are lucky they weren't terrorists. They wouldn't have had to report it if it weren't significant.
Steve - 3 security breaches don't make light when nuclear reacors are concerned. WHAT IF THEY POURED SOMETHING IN THE COOLING CANALS OR HAD WEAPONS. a FIRE FIGHT WITH WACKENHUT? WHO WOULD WIN I WONDER.
Foreigners making it to US shores, and even restricted places...we should all think twice about that.
I believe that a group of 30 is enough manpower to have a platoon in the Army. 6 miles (if it truly is 6 miles) is nothing to people who are in shape and used to military style maneuvers.
So, let's see... we have 30 illegal immigrants (they are not migrants) landing smack dab in the midst of FPL's plants and they are in contact with people who are in the county population outside the plant? Nice job FPL.
I loved the part in the article about not discussing FPL's security measures in the paper... does that mean there is nothing to discuss?
We have another OPEN issue at the plant that can not be explained away and we have folks fishing in water in Keys Gate with radioactive identifiers.
Don't expect our elected officials to step up and protect us from FPL.
The power plant issue has everything a politician wants to avoid... illegal immigration, nuclear issues, and it could represent lots of potential campaign money in jeopardy.
It's six miles straight line (as the crow flies) through the swamp, so it is misleading. If you haven't seen the cooling channels, take a look at them in Google Earth. It's a maze of channels cut through swamp, hundreds of miles long, would take months for anybody to navigate and get close to the reactors.
And pouring "something" in the channels, if you could pour something in enough quantity to not be dissolved in the zillions of gallons of water in the channels, would only result in the "something" being washed out to sea. The water runs away from the reactors.
There are many problems with security in the plant, but the cooling channels aren't one.
Does anyone kow if the Salahis were in the party?
Takes months to get near the reactors from the cooling canals..you are nuts.
Too bad they didn't have radiation badges on, we might have learned something about hanging around the cooling canals.
What a great test of plant security anyway!
The cooling canals are a closed system that are not directly connected to "the sea." They are bordered by fill roads and levees that would make for an easy hike straight to the plant.
What if they were from ANOTHER foreign country and HAD WEAPONS...long range weapons. This is a very serious security breach.
We are forgetting about the largest community of crocs (estimated between 500-1000) in the US that make the canals their home are the real front line of security for Turkey Point!
Why all the fuzz? This administration has thrown security out of the WH's balcony. Terrorists are coming to NY to be pampered in federal court. Let's prepare ourselves as worst things are heading our way!
How would the rate payers not pay the costs. Who do you think pays, Mr. Burns?
