The County Commission has Voted to Divert our Transit Tax Dollars. by Geniusofdespair

This article has me so angry today, I couldn’t even eat breakfast: Miami-Dade changes policy on spending of half-cent tax for transit. Herald Transit Reporter, Larry Lebowitz said:

Under the plan approved on Tuesday, all of the Metrorail expansion projects and new bus service that voters approved in 2002 would become aspirational goals, not mandatory requirements. This will give county managers more freedom to use a large chunk of sales-tax proceeds for routine transit agency operations and maintenance, as long as 10 percent of the net proceeds are set aside each year for capital expansion.

I actually agree with County Commissioner Joe Martinez on this one:

“I will do whatever I can to repeal this half-percent tax.”

Thank you Commissioners Rebeca Sosa, Joe Martinez and Carlos Gimenez for voting against this betrayal of the public trust. And, to the rest of you, why didn’t you listen to Carlos Gimenez when he said:

“As a government, we need to abide by our word, even if it hurts.”

This is a bait and switch, pure and simple. Lets start the campaign to repeal the half penny. They, as a body, cannot be trusted!

Sosa, Martinez and Gimenez were on the right side of this one. Gimenez, has been ralling against this since day one, but, I am glad that Sosa and Martinez jumped on board, even if it has more to do with their Mayoral aspirations than what they actually believe.

God forbid they run for Mayor. Out of Sosa and Martinez, I would vote for the lesser of two evils: Sosa.

Carlos Gimenez would win if he ran.

This is nothing but BULLSHIT. These three are trying to make brownie points to see who's going to run for the mayoral seat. This is an old Miami trick already!!! Why can't the stupid people of this county see this? Rebeca Sosa is one of the Marco Rubio pawns; Gimenez was part of the Alvarez group, but is now distancing himself because the developers might want to run him; Martinez is not very far from the plans -- isn't he part of the Pepe "Cancun" click? So what the hell is wrong with you, idiots? Or are these comments, congratulating these three manipulators, written by their immediate families? What we need in Miami is SOME NEW FACES!!!

So if you voted for this, Commissioner Barbara Jordan is now saying you voted for an aspiration?

Your honor I rest my case in the PTP Surtax fraud of 2002.

Last anon: The only problem with your analysis is that you are wrong on the facts with regard to Gimenez. Sosa and Martinez are not good commissioners, and do not have have the best interest of the citizens in mind. Gimenez is a quite different story, and don't listen to me, the facts tell the story. (1) He has never been in Alvarez's camp. (2) He has railed against Alvarez and his co-hort, Burgess since day 1. (3) He has been pushing for more power of the CITT since day one (legislation passed on that recently), and has lambasted staff for trying to do this back when Roosevelt Bradley was still the transit director and Gimenez was the chair of transportation. You clearly have another candidate that you are posting for, because the facts are not on your side...

I don't care if they are trying to get brownie points. When they do something I think is right, I recognize it. I don't care as much what their motives are. We aren't stupid....we know their stripes.

I guess is so rare they do anything right that youre right lets recognize it no matter the motives.
As for Gimenez if he's trying to run for Mayor he's got my vote.
Our current strong mayor just like our ex president has done nothing. How many days of this do we have left?

Speaking of Cancun and Pepe, did anyone ask who was on that yacht? I bet it was not just one or two people with county interests.

By the way, we knew that once Penelas cleared out and there would be no one there to defend his plan: to MAKE it work, that the commission would eventually grab the funds.

Can't the Mayor veto it?

The Mayor could veto the legislation, however, it was his administration that requested the change, so, it is highly unlikely that he would in essence veto himself, although he should in this case. Alvarez is horrible. We all got sold a bill of goods with that man.

We could have done a lot worse...like Rubio.

I don't care why they are doing something, so long as they do the right thing. I am a pragmatist. It's politics. Where it gets scary for me is when you try to predict what someone will do in the future, but let's not forget that we have to also focus on today.
